Holy crap. ONTD reports that Anthony Minghella, Oscar winning director for The English Patient, has died suddenly:
British film director Anthony Minghella has died at the age of 54, his agent has said. Minghella, whose films include Truly, Madly, Deeply and Cold Mountain, was chairman of the British Film Institute.
The story does not give any other details.
Such sad news. He meant something for all true cinephiles, I believe. He shall be sorely missed. We needed a voice like his nowadays.
I’m shocked! This is very sad news. He was a very good and still young filmmaker.
I saw “Cold Moutain” last sunday for the first time. Great, great film.
We lose a big director.
Wow, what a year. First Ledger, now, sadly, Minghella. Too many exquisite movie makers are leaving us prematurely
I’ve been able to think of nothing else since I heard. I LOVED this man.
He made the most exquisite, literary, brilliant, beautiful films that were achingly gorgeous to look at and were immensely moving to watch.
It’s hard to believe that there will never be any more….
This is so very sad and heartbreaking. He was relatively young and I feel so sad for his family right now.
The English Patient changed my life.
This news is so sad.
Very sad and unexpected. RIP.
What a sad and tragic loss.
Rest in peace, Mr. Minghella.
This is shocking and tragic. From what I’ve seen of him, Minghella seemed like a brilliant, yet still very down to earth guy.
May he rest in peace…thanks Anthony Minghella for the memories… 🙁
I am greatly shocked and saddened to read about the death of Anthony Minghella.
He, in my opinion, was a poet whose films elicited love, romance, loss and acceptance. In interviews, his romantic spirit came thru his smile and words.
One of my favorite recent films of the last decade has been “The English Patient”.
I shall never forget my initial reaction to the opening scene while sitting there in the movie theater. The white desert sands of Tunisia and the ink drawings with the music pulled me into an hypnotic spell of mystery. “Cold Mountain” captured the sacrifice of our Civil War with a love story of youth and longing. My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Minghella’s family and friends. Also, to him,
a deeply felt thank you for leaving us a body of work that will endure with his love and craft.
I adored “The English Patient,” “Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Breaking and Entering” and respect the rest of his work. Incredibly sad.
I don’t understand. I will wait for more details but I find this completely heartbreaking as The English Patient is one of my favorite films.
Oh dear 🙁
I am a huge fan of The Talented Mr Ripley (a movie that broke my heart), The English Patient and Breaking & Entering…. He would have many more succesful projects ahead, I am sure. Very sad news indeed. Rest in peace.
