(Spoiler alert)
I thought you would all enjoy this review by a ten year-old classmate of my daughter’s. She has written it as part of a newspaper we’re putting together:
We all love Indy I mean, what’s not to love? First of all, there’s the hat. The hat is awesome and it can’t be Indiana Jones without the hat. Number two, the whip. It helped Indy with, well, pretty much everything. Number three, the theme song. It’s catchy, it can be annoying but I love it anyway. Now number four, the most important one, the movies. The movies are funny. action packed and just plain cool! The 1,2,3 rocked and I recently saw the fourth. It was pretty good but it wasn’t the best one. I don’t think it was very Indiana Jonesy . I mean, what are Aliens doing in an Indiana Jones movie! You have got to be kidding me. Indiana Jones (played by Harrisan Ford) is back and ready to go on one of his adventures. He meets a boy on the way called Mutt (played by Shia LaBeouf) who accompanies him on the way to find the crystal skull. Oohhhhh scary. Anyway I thought it was okay, good, fine, pretty darn good, nevermind. So if you want my advice go see the movie and decide for yourself.
Great review. My sentiments exactly. 🙂
elessar, that “racist” joke came from this one TIN TIN comic decades ago, as CRACKED.com posted, where all the blacks were goggledy-eyes, big red lips, all savages….a joker, nothing more.
One thing about KOTS I noticed was RAIDERS and TEMPLE OF DOOM both had this dynamic as being made by a young guy going all out for fun….but CRUSADE and KOTS just feel like many of the Bond movies were in the 70s/80s for the most part:
Been there, done that, routine, new gimmick villain, you get the drill.
But Spielberg….the dude really, looking at his 2000s work, just aint that guy in the 80s anymore. He’s grown up, and wants to be more than simply Steven Spielberg.
And you gotta dig that at his age, the dude could coast it, but did something like MUNICH.
I never recall anything about Tintin being racist. Where did you get that impression?
Personally, I liked KOTCS and thought it on par with Last Crusade. Were there some things that bothered me? Yes, but even at his worst (and this is far from Steven’s worst), Spielberg’s still better than some of his competitors’ best.
I’m glad, though, that Steven is branching out after this and making films that, as RRA said, are more interesting to him. After years of waiting, he’s finally going to make LINCOLN (and get Liam an overdue Oscar), which I think, sounds like his best project in a while. TINTIN looks intriguing, and if it’s good enough for Steve and Pete, it’s good enough for me. INTERSTELLAR sounds pretty cool, and we’re LONG overdue for a really good space opera (if Cameron doesn’t beat him to the punch). Plus, the fact that Jonathan Nolan (Chris’ brother and TDK collaborator) wrote the screenplay makes it all the more interesting.
Pretty good review except I don’t understand this one line…
“Anyway I thought it was okay, good, fine, pretty darn good, nevermind. ” Sounds
I think the reason people have a problem with the aliens is because it seems a bit to sci-fi-esque. Eternal life, Ark of the covenant, etc. are more along the lines of supernatural/fantasy.
Can I find this on RT? I think the critic should be included. ;D
I don’t love SKULL, but like LAST CRUSADE it was decent matinee entertainment that never bored me…but really, Spielberg at his worst is about equal to about Stephen Sommers at his best….which aint a good sign folks.
Could SKULL have been better? Yes.
Did SKULL waste some cool ideas? Oh definately YES.
Did I get confused with the plot device? YUP
Which means, the Beard should quit the popcorn and go do more interesting stuff that will hold his interest, like LINCOLN or CHICAGO 7 or INTERSTELLAR (no idea about TIN TIN the racist Dutch kid).
I loved it unapologetically. And I completely agree with RRA!
I agree with the guy above, Aliens were not that weird, if you are fine with a “heavenly being” (aka other worldly being aka alien) burning people and giving eternal life then whats wrong if them just using aliens and cutting the bull. I will say it is not the best but it was a little better than the 2nd one for me. But I agree with the review in that it had everything I wanted, hate whip song action. So I was very happy with it and I am glad they came back for a 4th (now no more please, lets not push our luck).
I think this kid’s review has said the best line out of any other critical review out there, by legit adult, juvenile nerds at CHUD, or anywhere:
“So if you want my advice go see the movie and decide for yourself.”
Of course, I just don’t have a problem with the alien stuff as everyone else seems to have.
The way I see it, you can handle supernaturalism like the Ark of the Covenant burning people up like candles, shakarah stones setting fire, and the Holy Grail with its immortal properties…..then you shouldn’t have a problem with saucers.
Last week I too went for Indy IV, and left in the intermission (we have those here, regardless of film length). Why? It was an OK movie, but I realized, being a sunny day, I’d rather be outside.
Spot-on review by one of the targeted-demographics, that review. Reflects my thoughts exactly.
