Already, the documentaries this year have proven to be the best filmmaking has to offer. One of the most hyped thus far, American Teen, could do more than just garner Oscar attention; it could bring younger people into the genre, always a good thing because, let’s face it, that’s where the serious money is (cough cough Sex and the City cough cough). Cinematical has a story about American Teen by Eric Davis, who attended the packed premiere:
Ten minutes in, I realized this would be a different kind of film — one that, at times, was reminiscent of shows like The Hills, sure, but also delivers a powerful combination of humor, heart, passion, drama and sadness. Fact is, if American Teen doesn’t at least get nominated for Best Documentary come Oscar time, then folks at the Academy should seriously re-think what, exactly, makes a film one of the best of the year.
Other high profile docs this year include Polanski: Wanted and Desired, Young@Heart, Tyson, One Minute to Nine and others that have already caused a commotion at various festivals.
