Oscar Predictions: You Don’t Need a Weatherman to Know Which Way the Wind Blows
22 Jan 2012
Back in 1999, when Oscarwatch.com first began, the highest of priorities was to correctly predict the Oscar race. There was only one other site, for the most part, that predicted the Oscars – Tom O’Neil’s GoldDerby.com. Tom’s site collected mostly film critics who lined up to give their Oscar …

The Descendants Poised to Upset in Best Picture?
20 Jan 2012
There are few movies that feel like they could give The Artist some heat: Hugo and The Descendants. Perhaps, as many a Tweeter will tell you, “it’s been The Artist since Cannes.” And okay, fine. Maybe. What makes The Artist such a threat? It is loved by many, hated by …

The State of the Race: Of Bridesmaids and Dragon Tattoos – Year of the Woman or Just Another Year?
16 Jan 2012
It was hard not to notice Robin Wright at the Critics Choice awards, striding out onto the stage with her still impossibly youthful legs, and announcing that 2011 was the Year of the Woman. She referenced Bridesmaids and Dragon Tattoos, probably because she couldn’t say housemaids. Either way, …

It’s been a funny year for Oscar movies. The trial separation between critics and the industry has widened to a full blown divorce. The Artist and Moneyball are heading down the track to Oscar’s Best Picture with the most outstanding response from critics. Decent reviews have befallen most of the …

The State of the Race: The Changing of the Guard
2 Jan 2012
As I re-watched Avatar last night, or tried to, I was thinking about the future of cinema. I was thinking about how hard it is to sell dramas now to the general public. I was thinking about the Academy, and how difficult it must be for them to evolve out …

Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo: What it Feels Like for a Girl

Trouble in Mind – Diving Down Deep with Best Actress
30 Dec 2011
Three of the year’s strongest female performances threaten convention, the one that says females are usually cast as supporting, loving, noble characters who give of themselves in the service of the male lead. It’s not always the case, especially not so in the Best Actress race; what better way …

hmmm…close, but no cigar.
a nice teaser. I love the traditional 2-D animation…takes me back…
Looks like it could be a pretty good. Other than the 2-d, I think it’s gonna be okay!
Wow, we’ve finally got an African-American Disney princess. Hallelujah. New Orleans is not where I imagined the story taking place, but it’s kinda a nice change from the typical European fairytale setting with American accents.
Wow. I hope the crows from Dumbo have a cameo. It looks like they would fit right in. I also hope one of the characters is a large, loud, sassy black woman. They are always hilarious!
I don’t know if I’m too hot on the trailer, but it is a teaser after all.
Anyway, I’m excited for the return to 2D animation. Disney has let the Pixar folks (who are part of them now but still produce just 3D movies) had their way long enough, and while I can’t complain about Wall-E or Ratatouille, to me they are no Beauty and the Beast or Lion King. I think the Disney Renaissance (1989-1999) period was by far the best era for Disney. 2D seems like a breath of fresh air!
And yes, jennybee, I agree: what a nice thing to finally have an African-American princess. They’ve had Caucasian, Asian, Arabian, even Native-American “princesses”, but no African-Americans. I know that the majority of fairy tales come from Europe, but even still, Disney should have done this before.

I was wondering when we’d get the first irrational “This movie’s RACIST!” post. Geez, Disney finally gets around to making an animated film with a strong black female role model and all the buzz I’ve heard about it is people harping on how all these ridiculously trivial things make the film the next Song of the South. What in that trailer was in any way racially insensitive?
“Geez, Disney finally gets around to making an animated film with a strong black female role model and all the buzz I’ve heard about it is people harping on how all these ridiculously trivial things make the film the next Song of the South.”
That’s probably the main reason why it has taken Disney so long to make a black-centric movie. Too much of a risky area to go in.
I was reading on IMDB a while ago that there was controversy about it being racist because one of the characters (a fairy godmother-type or the villain, I would assume) is a voodoo witch-doctor. It seems to me that the people making those kinds of complaints have no idea about African folktales such as Anansie the Spider Man, etc. otherwise they wouldn’t be criticizing the movie.
The only problem I would have with the trailer is that it seems a bit too modern and “cynical”, like most animated movies these days. You’d never catch characters from The Little Mermaid or Beauty & The Beast being so sassy or sarcastic to that frog.
Sheesh, it’s not (from this little teaser, at least) racist! It’s representative of a very much alive Southern culture, one I’ve lived around all my life. Why do people think anytime someone makes a black character that, egads, SOUNDS black, it’s racist? It’s simply reflective of a reality and a proud heritage. The racism if it exists is in the beholder’s eye.
Jack, I hear ya on the sass, but I’m just happy there were no fart jokes in this one.
my only question is why a score by Randy Newman??? not that the whole movie should’ve only included African Americans, but they couldn’t find Quincy Jones, or Stevie Wonder, or a Jazz artist to do the score for a African American focused movie set in New Orleans??? That teaser wreaks of Randy Newman…..not a good smell.
I don’t think it would be as much controversy if they just took an African fairytale ( They do exist ya know).
Overall, it looks cute, I see nothing controversial about the teaser.
I’m glad that they’re finally doing an African American fairy tale, but why does it also have to be on the same film that they decide to return to 2-D animation. Not that I don’t like 2-D but it looks like they’re just trying to be cheap because they don’t think the masses will watch it.
I actually miss 2-D animation. So I’m glad, besides this is a princess movie, all of the princesses are in 2d. They actually returned to 2D with Enchanted.
I think this has potential. I’ll be looking forward to it.
I think the 2D style brands classic Disney animation. It’s nice. Nothing against it.
Looking forward to it, I really like the teaser. Now you just need to post the new PIXAR “UP” teaser that came out a couple of days ago!

It’s designed to be in the vein of the “Disney princess” movies (at least that’s how Disney is branding them, these days). Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Cinderella, etc. If it was 3-D it would have seemed like something different. I like that they’re at least attempting to bring traditional 2-D animation back, I don’t really think it seems like it’s on the cheap at all.
Anika Noni Rose of DG is the voice of Princess.
*Very* cute.
This looks awfully sweet. I’m optimistic about the switch back to 2-D animation and love the New Orleans setting. Hopefully this marks the beginning of more high-quality 2-D Disney animated films- I haven’t cared for a 2-D Disney film since Tarzan.
Well, with my young bunch, I will be seeing this trailer or trailer, good or bad reviews. The premise is interesting enough, and the 2 D may give it some added visual attraction, even if the advertised 3D of NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS turned out to be 2 D.
I liked the teaser. I do admit, as an African-American myself (and just as someone with some sense) I am definitely not a huge fan of Disney. Walt the person was a pretty crappy human being. But one thing that has been pretty consistent is the animated films. And I personally LOVE that this will be 2-D. It’s about time they brought it back. I’m looking forward to this one.
everyone (not necessarily here) is saying this movie is racist because there are stereotypes. ok. the departed portrayed some irish americans as drunks or good for nothings and nobody got upset about that. why are people allowed to be racist towards some ethnic groups but not others? racism is never ok, ever!
Why hasn’t anyone mentioned the movie…..IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS….it’s the one i want to see.
A return to classic 2D quality animation with strong characters, story and a superb lead princess? I’m game!
As for it being “racist”, well, its America. Land of the Fucking Sensitive (to quote The Divine Miss Bette Midler)
I 2nd the emotion over the return to 2D, hand drawn stuff. I also didn’t see a lick of racism in the thing.
so, uh, Free…you knew Walt personally? what an odd statement to make. this “crappy human being” sure produced some amazing stuff. those who worked for him said he could be a bit difficult as a perfectionist, but overall, co-workers and family loved the guy.
I believe he’s referring to Disney’s antisemitism and general racist attitude.
IN SEARCH OF A MIDNIGHT KISS. Let’s hear about this one.
I love the trailer…gives me that fuzzy champagne feeling. Something that’s so worth the wait!
