Using virtually all the shots from last month’s 90-second teaser, the expanded trailer for Body of Lies fills out the screen with footage that begins to look like Ridley Scott instead of brother Tony. The David Ignatious novel came equipped with a depth of characterization and sharp authenticity rare to the genre, so it was interesting to see William Monahan treat much of the book like disposable pot-boiler ingredients — in a good way. Scott and Monahan took those ingredients and rewrote the recipe, reshaping the novel into a richer species of thriller. This new trailer captures the atmosphere of controlled chaos and hints at the top layers of the plot’s labyrinthine complexity. If it seems to anyone to be like a dozen other espionage movies of the past few years — have a little faith, ok? There’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. I’m finally feeling this might be better than I hoped — and my hopes were already high.
