Pics of Milk Revealed Online
Yeah, I know it’s a few days old by now, but Slashfilm recently posted some lovely new stills of Milk, which is great since the same images have been floating around the web for so long. I don’t know if it’s a strategy or not but I like it as a way to build anticipation among the chattering class. Remember how little of There Will Be Blood anyone saw?

Nice. I wonder if we’re going to see a whole passel of “got milk?” kind of FYC promos: “seen milk?”, “honored milk?” “got Oscar?” and maybe Oscar statue with milk mustache? Probably most will stay true to the dramatic nature of the material, but I bet there are at least some fan-ads that do it.

There Will Be Blood was a force of nature of a film. Don’t get me wrong, Milk looks excellent, but I’d be surprised if it were half as bold and daring as the former. This is mainstream Van Sant after all.

I hope this film is good. Like most Van Sant “fans” I tend to think the directors smaller, art films (I hate calling them that though) are usually far preferable to his studio fare (“Psycho” much?), but this film has a fantastic trailer. What’s more, Sean Penn, who I go up and down with, looks really fantastic here. Can I also just say, completely acknowledging how blind a prediction this is (not that it HASN’T ben predicted in numerous places), but I think James Franco is so being nominated this year.

I cannot wait to see this movie. In trailer, I thought i saw a scene where Milk listens to some kind of opera or classic music. Is that the case? Somehow that scene reminds me of Tom Hanks in Philadelphia…
Given the homophobic academy (see Crash over Brokeback Mountain ) I do not expect this movie to win the best picture (may be as a redemption they can give it to Milk this time:) God knows. But Sean Penn will definetely get nod. But i think he will lose it to Mickey Rourke (this year’s comeback kid!!!)

Oh Penn will be nommed and will be a frontrunner. Rourke looks strong to win, but remember actors like Burt Reynolds, Lauren Bacall, etc. were strong front runners for never having an Oscar and lost to others.

I don’t think this is as “mainstream” as GOOD WILL HUNTING, even if it’s not exactly GERRY or ELEPHANT or DRUGSTORE COWBOY. Advance word has been quite good as the threads here and elsewhere have revealed, and I am one who is most intrigued with this subject matter. I am skeptical of Penn, but I have my fingers-crossed on that.
