It's always great to read an enthusiastic early review of a film that such and such a blogger loved. It is always a bummer to read a negative review. A film's life, though, be it destined for Oscar or hopeful of big box office, is often in the hands of ...
127 Hours is very much a survival film, most of it taking place in one location, based on the real-life story of Aron Ralston who trapped his arm between a canyon in a boulder after a brutal fall, and had to escape with a pocketknife. What's notable about the character ...
In making the movie, Boyle knew that if the audience averted its eyes when Ralston ultimately breaks the bones in his arm and severs a tangled mass of tendons, muscle and nerves with a dull knife, “127 Hours” would have failed. While one member of the Telluride ...

Great trailer. I just hope it’s done properly and not too rushed. Damn that Harvey Weinstein!

The trailer is terrific…but Kate winslet in no way looks supporting from the trailer and the movie looks so much like best pic material!

Wow, is that Lena Olin?
The trailer is great, and I am so excited for the movie. I’ve just started the book.

That trailer does make the movie look pretty great.
This is surely one of the oddest gambles of Weinstein’s career. I just wonder if there will be any backlash from his handling of the situation. It could end up working in Daldry’s favor though. I think he’s definitely a sleeper for Best Director now.

I’ve been so worried about this one, but the trailer looks great. Just those small looks and nuances from Winslet. Fingers crossed this gets some awards traction.
Ross says:

The trailer looks visually great, but to me it doesn’t recreate the spirit of the novel. I still say it and I hope the movie proves me wrong: Kate Winslet simply isn’t Hanna. She seems like acting all the time and this character is much more haunting and enigmatic in the novel. I think that the choice of Kate was a mistake. And I really, really think they could have done without including Fiennes (talking to a psychiatrist). This V.O. “invention” is a cliche, which hurts. There was really no tension for me. But visually – cinematography, production design – and the music are terrific. And I think Kross was interesting in this performance. And I think director Stephen Daldry made an actually solid film, but the spirit of the book is gone. I don’see it. At least in the trailer.

@ Ross
Yeah, there was a mistery in the book
in this trailer – not so much
I hope film does a justice to the novel

Don’t always judge an entire film from a trailer.

Nobody judges a movie on trailer only, I just say this trailer reveals too much of story.

Go Winslet! I can’t help but love her. And Daldry is a wonderful director. I’m going to avoid the book so that the movie doesn’t disappoint me. Kate is often thrown into roles that don’t quite suit her. A lot of people who read ‘Little Children’ thought she was too pretty for that role. To me, she sort of made it work. So, I think even if she isn’t the ideal actress to play this role, she’ll do something interesting with it. I’m getting the feeling from initial screenings that Revolutionary Road will be a big movie, maybe even Best Picture, so I think that is more likely to get her the nomination.

Sigh…
this is one of my least favourite decisions of the year.
I am so looking frorward to this film (haven’t read the book), but I wonder if they shouldn’t just have let it simmer and cook a tad more. But maybe the Weinstein knows what he’s doing.
From a Kate perspective this sucks tho. I’m feeling Rev Road for a Kate nomination, but not for a win. IF they manage to convince the academy voters that Kate is supporting in The Reader (hey – they managed with Casey Affleck in Jesse James – but he falls in the ‘lesser star’ catagory, which Kate certainly doesn’t. It also worked for Jamie Foxx in Collateral (to secure a 2nd nomination) and Ethan Hawke in Training Day tho…) then Rev Road could add the heat that makes her a sure-bet for a Supporting win…
But who wants Kate to win in supporting?!
Here’s a far better senario – everyone is looking forward to The Reader. They/we all know its coming next year. This year Kate gets nominated for Rev Road, and people again say how she’s overdue. She doesn’t win, but she’s already a lock for Best Actress NEXT year, and if she’s as good as we expect, she is a sure-but for a Best Actress win next year – with the heat already building from this year…
Sigh.. maybe Harvey knows something we don’t (well, he certainly knows alot we don’t..). i promised myself I wouldn’t complain about this and just go with it. Oh well, from this point on…

Wow this looks fantastic! The music in the trailer was great also. Just based off of what I’ve seen, I would think Winslet would be more likely to be nominated in this than Revolutionary Road. I don’t care which one sticks, though, so long as she finally wins.
Friedl says:
Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 1:01pm
As for the ‘mystery’ tho – I think Stephen Daldry is a rather special director, who’s films work on a slightly different level. Its always that thing that makes them more than the sum of their parts that makes them special, and the rest is just a bonus. & he gets great performances.

I think if there’s one thing Kate Winslet knows how to do, it’s choosing great roles for herself. She has an incredible batting average in that respect. At the rate she’s going, she may pass Meryl’s nomination record (though, of course, Meryl will probably still be around for a long time herself…)

Nicole turned this down because of her pregnancy. I guess that is a good thing. Though Nicole might have been great in this movie. Or she could have ruined it.

I’ve read the book and the trailer looks a lot like the novel. It will be interesting to see it in theaters.
To me, talking about the Academy Awards will only continue the jinx. Let’s just enjoy the films.
The December 2008 issue of Vanity Fair has Kate Winslet on the cover and I’m dying to see if she will get into discussing this film in some detail.

I am perfectly happy with the Meryl Streep we’ve got, and I anticipate years and years more of important, impressive work from Meryl Streep. So, I’ll avoid any kind of “Kate Winslet’s the new Meryl Streep” comment.
On the other hand…man, she is good. And in a lot of ways, she’s just getting started. Her impact on acting and film is not to be underestimated. Just from the trailer alone: chills.

i tried reading the book, but couldnt get past the first few chapters… i tried twice, but no luck… i wana cry… im going to try one last time… on another note, the new EW notes (for whatever its worth) that winslet will be pushed for supporting for The Reader and lead for Revolutionary Road… This makes me wanna cry too… first, if so, penelope cruz will likely lose any chance she has… second, winslet is the best actress of her generation… her first win should NOT be for supporting, damn it!!!
frederic lyon says:
Monday, November 3, 2008 at 2:02am
If Kate Winslet is nominated (again ! Sixth nomination !) I think she should win an Oscar…..otherwise it would be a joke !
Her part in the Reader is a leading part, and Ralph Fiennes is a supporting part because he comes in the movie only when his character is an older man. In most of the movie his character is still young and played by an other younger actor.
I think Kate should be nominated for the Reader as a leading actress, i do not believe Revolutionnary Road can match the Reader.
And Kate is the best actress of her generation, that is the truth. She is the best under 30 years old actress in the world, she can play ANYTHING.
frederic lyon says:
Monday, November 3, 2008 at 2:22am
And who else can win best actress academy award ?
Sally Hawkins ? (who ?)
Kristin Scott Thomas ? (one french speaking movie is enough for at least the next 30 years !)
Ann Hathaway ? (not bad, but too early for her)
Keira Knightley ? (when the chiken will have teeth)
Angelina Jolie ? (!!!!! ?)
Melissa Leo ? (who ?)
Alex says:
Monday, November 3, 2008 at 10:55am
Ross…if you remember the book, Fiennes is not talking to a psychiatrist. I won’t say anything else, so I don’t spoil anything.
Anyway, it is Kristin Scott Thomas who deserves the Oscar. No matter the language.
