I’m specially happy with El Orfanato (you missed a T in the title, Sasha), and Waltz with Bashir, definitely two of the best movies of the year.

Gomorrah and Il Divo rule! 5 nominations both! It’s a great moment for italian movies – great stories, strong directors, beautiful cinematographies! I hope that Academy will recognize them too (Gomorrah is the official selected movie to enter the race for best foreign language film for Italy, but both of them could make it into other categories).

As much as I’d love to love these awards, I just can’t. I don’t know if it is because they don’t have a good marketing campaign, or if it’s because they mix up “older” movies with more recent ones or what, but in a few months nobody will be able to name the winners. And still, somehow, counting also with movies from months ago seems fairer than counting just on the most recent releases.

The race has started for The Class and Happy-go-lucky. Expect to see these films come Oscar night in some form or another.

It’ll take some time for me to see the name “Steve McQueen” and not think of the other Steve McQueen. And I’ll probably confuse Fassbender with Fassbinder, too. But that’s just me.

Who decides the European Film Awards, by the way? Journalists or professionals in the film industry?

The members of the European Film Academy (1.800 film professionals) will vote the winners. I’m a little bit confused about the nom of Kristin Scott Thomas. The film wasn’t mentioned in the official longlist:

I’m a little bit disappointed that Kechiche (this year’s César winner) isn’t mentioned and Desplechin got only one nom for Laurence Briaud’s Sound.
But you never know, who will win Europe’s Main Film Award … Last year The Queen and King of Scotland got the most noms and finally Mungiu won the awards for best film and direction.
Greetings from Germany
