Why Can’t We Be Friends…

Patrick Goldstein loathes Oscar bloggers. He’s got Tom O’Neil hopping mad. His constant obsession with Oscar bloggers really has to stop. Doesn’t he have better things to do than police what other people are doing?
Oscar watching is like porn. Maybe it’s not even like regular porn – maybe it’s like furry porn: it’s so odd ball and specific most people are confused by it. Except those that are into it. And they’re really really REALLY into it. Goldstein writes:
Anyone who doesn’t believe that the Oscars haven’t been thoroughly hijacked by a gang of daffy, clown-suit-clad Oscar bloggers making endlessly moronic best picture predictions just hasn’t been paying attention.
Well, that’s the thing, isn’t it. The furries have hijacked good old fashioned porn. It’s funny that he thinks the Oscars have been hijacked. The Oscars are what they’ve always been. The race is cluttered a bit with too much chatter out front but let’s not forget who was on this beat years ago: Patrick Goldstein. Let’s not forget who has been doing this article about Scott Rudin and Harvey Weinstein, that article about The Reader. In between real stories he has to go tattling on people who are, quite frankly, just writing filler to pass the time with an increasingly interested audienced.
So O’Neil writes filler, Anne Thompson writes filler, Dave Karger writes filler and then Patrick Goldstein writes filler about their filler. Can’t we all just agree to accept each other’s lifestyles? If Goldstein doesn’t care for furry porn perhaps he ought not constantly watch it? Just a thought.

Just ignore him, Sasha. He’s just an old coot. Also, many of these bloggers are also “legit” film critics and journalists in their own right, aren’t they? Anne Thompson was writing for Premiere for years before oscar blogging even entered the picture. The more Goldstein complains, the more archaic he appears.

I think if I wanted my name tossed around the internet, I’d find a way to make a group of bloggers mad too.

I think what makes him most angry is that most of the so-called Oscar bloggers are better writers than he is.
This whole “legitimate film critic” versus “blogger” debate is so boring, anyways. It’s so 2006.
Those who are deemed “bloggers”, as though it is something “less than” are doing the most exciting film journalism right now. I don’t like that someone with a little seniority feels the need to bad mouth people who are, for all practical concerns, his colleagues.

I think there is a lot of pressure to drive up traffic everywhere, especially at the LA Times. At any rate, I agree that it’s a bit 2006 – it’s sort of over now. Newspapers took a hit, blogs have survived, journalists are still working online, television is full of corporate-owned news. What’s next, though? I just feel like Goldstein has this ongoing obsession with dissing Oscar bloggers which pretty much resulted in my stopping reading his site, which I was starting to like. But one can only be spit in the face a few times to be disgusted enough to move on, even though he’s never directly attacked this site. I once asked him for a link exchange and didn’t get one, which is fine, but I always kind of liked the guy. He is afflicted with the need to be a prick. Whatever gets you through the night.

Goldstein is so not obviously right. I worship at the altar of Oscar bloggers everywhere.

“What’s Next?” is a great question to be asking!

So if blogs having too much influence on the oscars translates to Scorsese and the Coen brothers finally winning oscars, GO OSCAR BLOGS.

It’s not that blogging has “destroyed” the Oscars–it’s that it’s made “serious” journos like him irrelevant by democratizing the process.

Sports can have bloggers
Politics can have bloggers
Why can’t entertainment?
