DRACULA’S LAMENT!!!
I’m just begging and praying that this gets nominated. I would love to see Jason Segel up there on his piano with a massive “Avenue Q”-style production of muppets behind him.

22% of the eligible songs are High School Musical songs…
Ryan says:

This won’t happen (mostly because of my latter two choices) but if I had to choose from this list I would put down:
“Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire
“Down to Earth” from Wall-E
“The Wrestler” from The Wrestler
“Rock Me Sexy Jesus” from Hamlet 2
“High School Musical” or “Night to Remember” from High School Musical

“O Saya” from Slumdog Millionaire is an absolutely FANTASTIC song. I hope it’s one of the final five.
“Another Way to Die” on the other hand…

I agree with you TheJack.
Dracula’s lament is one of the best songs of the year. I can picture it now, a little puppet Dracula playing the piano.

“Right to Dream” from Tennesee is the best!!!!
GO Mariah Carey!!
Haifa says:

I didn’t know Dracula’s Lament was even eligible. That was definitely the high point of FSM, for me.
Most people think Jai Ho is most likely to get nominated for Slumdog, but I’m hoping for O…Saya. Cause it’s an awesome song, but also just to see M.I.A at the Oscars.

What’s the rule that decides whether there’s three or five nominees?
The Jack says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 8:22pm
What is the big final song that I’ve heard about in Slumdog? Is it Jai Ho or O Saya?
Haifa says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 8:23pm
That’s Jai Ho, The Jack. O…Saya plays at the beginning.
Paul Outlaw says:

I’m thinking…
“Down to Earth” (Peter Gabriel)
“Gran Torino” (Jamie Cullum)
“Jai Ho” (A.R. Rahman)
“Trouble the Waters” (Black Kold Madina)
“The Wrestler” (Bruce Springsteen)
Although something’s telling me not to count out Zac Efron & Co., and Miley Cyrus…

Rock Me Sexy Jesus would be great on the Oscars performed by Hugh Jackman.
I think The Wrestler is going to win the Best Song Oscar–or else something from Slumdog.

Just curious, since HSM3 has proven that there’s no limit to number of songs from movies that can be considered…
Is anyone else a little surprised that the other songs from Forgetting Sarah Marshall (“Inside of You”, “We’ve Got to Do Something”, “A Taste for Love”) weren’t shortlisted? Especially since all three are prominently featured in the movie in their own scenes…
Daniel S-R says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:31pm
As long as three of the five nominees are from “Enchanted,” I’m good.
Alfredo says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:35pm
I’m thinking AT LEAST One song from HSM3 will be nominated. My money would be on “I want it all” just for the line that says “…and the Oscar goes to…ME!”
Also I would love to see “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” performed at the Oscars!
So I’m seeing the nominees coming down to these:
“Down to Earth” from WALL*E
“The Wrestler” from The Wrestler
“Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire
“I Want It All” from High School Musical 3: Senior Year
“Rock Me Sexy Jesus” from Hamlet 2
The Natural says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:37pm
It’s between “Down to Earth” and “The Wrestler” for the win. I think Springsteen’s going to be taking it home again this year.
Peter says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:41pm
Hey Daniel s-r, can the other two songs be from ‘Dreamgirls’?
Cahiers says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:43pm
My dream list:
“Little Person” – Synecdoche, NY
“Down to Earth” – Wall-E
“The Call” – Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (haven’t seen the movie, but Regina Spektor is boss)
“Rock Me Sexy Jesus” – Hamlet 2
“O Saya” – Slumdog Millionaire
The only ones I really, really desperately want to see nominated so I can see them performed are “Little Person” and “Down to Earth” because those are two of the best songs of the year, period. I wouldn’t mind seeing Norah Jones or Jason Segel either, but I know those aren’t likely to happen and as much as I love “The Wrestler,” it’s a bit of a low-key song, and not good TV, even with Springsteen performing it. It’s obvious at least one of the nominations will be for HSM 3, but as long at the top two are nominated and performed by the original artists, I’ll be happy. (Though it would be mind blowing to see M.I.A. on the Oscars too.)
Jonah says:
Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:43pm
Out of ignorance – who votes for Best Song? I ask because if its the same group who vote for Best Score (if they are the same branch, I mean) then look out for Down to Earth; it was co-composed by the much-beloved, much-respected, never-Oscared Thomas Newman (who better win at least one Oscar this for WALL*E… I think he’s gotta win one this year not just for his work on WALL*E but also for his combined catalogue by now. He has, what, 8 nominations already?) He’s gonna get one eventually and I think now’s the time. Just not sure what category it’ll be in. I could see them giving Slumdog Score and fitting Newman (and Peter Gabriel, don’t forget the fame factor) with Best Song. Springsteen (whom I love more than any other musician) already has his Oscar…
Daniel says:

I’d really love to see Little Person from Synecdoche nominated. That song has stuck with me for a while now and is definitely my favorite from the year so far.

Mariah Carey! You go, girl! I absolutely wish she will make the cut and perform at the oscar! I have just listened to the song and the song is very fabulous! I can’t wait at all the announcement of the big 5! I wish it would be today!

“Down to Earth” winning would absolutely make my day. It was my favorite part of my favorite movie of the year.

a) Lord, please, don’t allow “Another Way to Die” to be nominated.
b) “The Lodger” was already released? IMDB points a DVD premiere on February.
c) Is there a website where we can listen to all the songs?
d) The lockest of the lock: Bruce again (even more than Ledger and Cruz; I can see both not winning, but not Springsteen). Should also have won for “Dead Man Walking”. “Pocahontas”? Bleargh.
Xavi Rodriguez says:

1. Wall-E (“Down to Earth”)
2. The Wrestler (“The Wrestler”)
These two are locks for nomination efven for win…
3. Slumdog Millionaire (Most Probably jai Ho, but maybe a la Hustle & Flow)
4. Teneesse (“Right to Dream”)
5. Unfortunally is probably 1 HSM 3 Song >.<

MIA is pregnant. When she became a Grammy nominee for Best Record of the Year (“Paper Planes”), she revealed that her baby was due on Feb 8, the day of the Grammys. I really don’t see her performing at the Academy, even though I desperately want to see her and Rahman on stage.
On the other hand, Sukhwinder Singh, who sung “Jai Ho” and even “Chaiyya Chaiyya” can surely make it. Would love to see Rahman grab an Oscar. Methinks he has a better shot at score than song. But lets see. I think it will be really confirmed if he wins Globe. Everbody remembers the soundtrack after the movie and Rahman deserves all the credit for that.

Also “Little Person” is a beautiful little song and i hope it finds its way into the nominees!

My personal picks:
“Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire
“The Wrestler” from The Wrestler
“Down to the Earth” from WALL-E
“Rock Me Sexy Jesus” from Hamlet 2
“Little Person” from Synecdoche, New York
Those are just my favorites, not what I expect to be nominated. I didn’t realize Jai Ho was an original song, I hope it can get a nom. Also want to see Little Person get in if only so Charlie Kaufmann can get a Best Song nomination (how weird would that be?). If I had to pick a personal favorite, it would have to be Rock Me Sexy Jesus, though I think it’s a long shot.

I admit though I want “Jai Ho” to be performed all Bollywood style with a bunch of backup dancers.
And even though I said “HSM” and “Night to Remember” a few comments back, I’m actually secretly hoping for “I Want It All.” Plus Lucas Grabeel singing in front of his Milk castmates would be great.
It’d be great if the Academy could stream all of these songs from their website. I want to hear them all.

I think that Larry Mark and Bill Condon are secretly hoping for a “Jai Ho” nomination. It would mean a big Bollywood-style performance, complete with Sukhwinder Signh and background dancers. Hopefully they’d get a real B-Wood choreographer to do the performance, like Farah Khan, A first for an Oscar show and it would probabley one of the highlights. A.R.Rahman’s live shows are AMAZING! if he got involved it would be quiet amazing. An O Saya nomination would be funky, but I can’t imagine how it would be performed. But seeing MIA at the OScars, a Dark Knight Best Pic nom, A Bollywood performance, and they’d be pulling ratings from all over the place. Seriously, they could take the show to other levels.
Regardless, there needs to be some B-Wood representaion.

“Another Way To Die” should be nominated but it won’t, cause it’s too good for the Academy. They will nominate 3 songs from “High School Musical”, one from “Gran Torino” and one from “Wall-E” or “Bolt”.

I want both of A.R. Rahman’s songs nominated, though.

The Wrestler and Jai Ho are the frontrunners, which means some crappy song from High School Musical will win the Oscar.
AJ says:

Is “The Wrestler” a credit song? “Down to Earth” is a credit song and so are “Jai Ho,” “Another Way to Die” (well beginning credits but still), “I Thought I Lost You,” and “The Call.” Many of the ‘front-runners’ are credit songs, last year there were 0 credit songs nominated and the year before and only 1 from the year before that.

As much as there was talk about getting the general moviegoing audience to watch the Oscars because of the TDK, it looks like the teeny boppers will get to see HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL and BOLT, too.
Barf.
But with about 50 songs nominated, it seems unavoidable that HSM3 is in for at least one awful, terrible song.

From oscars.org:
“A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any film. If more than two songs from a film are in contention, the two songs with the most votes will be the nominees.”
“If there are 25 or fewer qualified works submitted, the Music Branch Executive Committee may recommend to the Board of Governors that nominations be limited to three. If there are nine or fewer qualifying works submitted, the Executive Committee may recommend to the Board of Governors that no award be given in that category for the current year.”

i’m hoping that “By the Boab Tree” from Australia makes it. It was a good song, but they’ll probably go for songs where the performances will attract more viewers.

I pray that enough people see Synecdoche to get “Little Person” nominated. It definitely deserves to be one of the five, and I personally wouldn’t think twice about voting for it for the win, even though I really like the Peter Gabriel (Wall-E) and Bruce Springsteen (The Wrestler) songs.

Ha, I would love to see a REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA song be nominated and performed at the Oscars. It will never happen, but it would be awesome.
The one I want that actually has a more realistic chance of happening is Rock Me Sexy Jesus.
John says:

The most likely to be nominated are:
Down to Earth from Wall-E
The wrestler from The wrestler
In Rodanthe from Nighs in Rodanthe
The story from My blueberry nights
Gran Torino from Gran Torino
With high possibilities:
Barking at the moon from Bolt
Once in a lifetime from Cadillac records
Right to dream from Tennesse
The call from TCON. Prince Caspian
Chromaggia from Repo! The genetic opera

Where is “All Dressed Up In Love” from ‘Sex and the City’? I would have thought that was at least in contention due to the fact that Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson performed the song. In my book it was a phenomenal song, written by Cee-Lo of Gnarls Barkley, and sung with a fervor to die for.
If for nothing else, it’s a hell of a lot better than that damn “Another Way To Die” nonsense. Makes you wonder how great a Amy Winehouse 007 Theme would have been. I still long for it.
