Let’s hope that these critic choices choke off presumed frontrunners!

I knew NY hates The Dark Knight, but I didn’t think they hated it that much to exclude Heath Ledger.

At some point in the past, I commented on Josh Brolin being the real contender….I’m glad I’m getting that right so far.

Maybe they are considering him for Best Actor….it’s so contentious that it’s taking a long time.

Sally Hawkins is certainly getting a lot of love.

Add to this the fact that she’s certain to be Globe nominated, and is a strong contender to win in the Comedy-Musical category, it seems increasingly unlikely that she’ll go without an Oscar nod.

    Good.

I know that some of you think Heath Ledger shouldn’t win it all, but if he’s going to lose to somebody, why Brolin?. He didn’t do much in Milk.

True. In Milk, both James Franco and Emile Hirsch were much better.

Amen, Steve. I think she’s a lock for a nomination.

I think Brolin is getting love for the last year that he’s had (which includes No Country for Old Men) more than his actual performance.

Word, Have a Nice Day, word.

I mean…subtle, schmudttle…but James Franco broke my heart.Could anyone break a piece off of him…for all of us?

G’damn it, at least give it Ralph Fiennes who will never be taken seriously in the Best Actor race…he is losing steam….when will he ever win?!?!?!?!?

While I think Franco and Hirsch were just as powerful in “Milk,” I thought Brolin did a terrific job in bringing Dan White to life. He brought a set of complexities to a difficult role that was very impressive to me.

Damn, the next category is certainly taking time… mybe they vote for best actor and could not decide wheter to take Penn, Langella or (hopefully) Mickey Rourke?

i hope Supporting Actress goes to Rebecca Hall for VCB & Frost/Nixon over Penélope Cruz for VCB, similarly to how they chose Ellen Burstyn for The Last Picture Show while Cloris Leachman was winning everything for the same film. My dream will be squashed soon.

    MIKE LEIGH FOR DIRECTOR.

I completely agree Franco > Brolin. I’m unsure if Hirsch would be in between or after Brolin though. Franco had the most impact on me though. I hope both James and Josh get nodded.

And yes, Brolin’s nom (AND Franco’s potential nom as well, hopefully), will be partially for other performances: i.e. W. and Pineapple Express.

but… Brolin over Ledger???? give me a fucking break….

Looking more and more like “Happy-Go-Lucky” will be taking best film after all. I’m surprised it didn’t get screenplay if they were going to be that stingy :P

For the record, I thought the film was very good.

Javier Bardem had the trickiest role of making his character NOT CREEPY. It’s like, ask for a three-some but don’t scare them, okay!

Even me as an audience I was like, HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? But with Bardem, it’s like, WHY AREN’T YOU ASKING ME?

And I start asking myself, “Why am I such a prudish American?”

And also, his switch from Spanish to English to Spanish was pretty impressive. Great acting.

Also, Josh Brolin was fine with what he had to do in Milk, but NOWHERE near the likes of Heath Ledger, the great Bill Irwin or (coincidentally) Eddie Marsan. Completely undeserved attention that seems entirely motivated by wanting to make up for his numerous snubs last year.

Funny: Happy-go-lucky seems to be a hate it-love it kind of picture!
I like it, but the real deal for me is the performance by Sally Hawkins, not the way it was directed!

Wow, it’s really looking like a Happy-Go-Lucky upset but this will probably be like United 93 and other NYFCC picks (Mulholland Drive, really!?!?)… where it has absolutely nothing to do with the Oscars. The BFCA is always closest and there’s a reason for that… it’s made up of television and radio people who probably come to the closest in terms of thinking as actors.
