Third Twilight Film Goes in Interesting Direction

Variety’s Dave McNary reports on the third installment, Eclipse, which my daughter says is the “best book.” Contrary to early reports, it won’t be directed by Drew Barrymore (whew!) but by Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona. Bayona directed The Orphanage. Eclipse has a release date of June 30, 2010.

Chris Weitz is directing the second film. So far, only the first was directed by a woman, even though the Twilight franchise is all about the girls. Catherine Hardwicke was a good choice. It is smart to switch directors, though, a la the Harry Potter series. Kathryn Bigelow, Jane Campion, Kimberly Pierce – these are the helmers I’d like to see take a whack at these god-awful books. Still, Bayona is an inspired choice.
