The ongoing series Tech Support by Gerard Kennedy continues over at InContention.com. Mostly at this stage of the game it’s a lot of spit-balling, particularly where pesky tech branches are concerned – but Kennedy does a pretty good job of mind-reading nonetheless – there is one that has yet to show its face that is considered a shoo-in:
At the end of the day, however, the most likely film of those yet to premier to show its face in this race would be James Cameron’s “Avatar” (getting the Comic-Con tease this afternoon). Particulars on the production is still quite elusive, but I suspect it will be technically dazzling (as Cameron always is) and the sci-fi nature of the film makes this seem like a natural fit.
But even still, he has to admit:
Undoubtedly, however, some unexpected surprises could yet emerge. I certainly didn’t see “Slumdog Millionaire” or “Wanted” as likely nominees in this category at this point last year…and the latter had already opened!
Unless Avatar bombs, it will be represented in both sound categories in a walk. But it is simply too early to call many of the other films that are slated for release and whether they will be represented here. Kennedy is dead on, I think, with his Hurt Locker prediction. And then there is the question of whether it will cancel out The Green Zone.
Currently, Kris Tapley has the following listed for this category:
Avatar
Public Enemies
Star Trek
Transformers
