I think this is new, but I hope it didn’t turn up in last year’s coverage — TIME has no date on it and I can’t remember if I read it or not. So if it’s old, there is no harm in reading it again. The top ten moments:
Blood Simple to No Country for Old Men
- Blood Simple (1984)
- Raising Arizona (1987)
- Miller’s Crossing (1990)
- Barton Fink (1991)
- The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
- The Big Lebowski (1998)
- Fargo (1996)
- O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
- The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001)
- No Country for Old Men (2007)
The Big Lebowski is full of favorite moments for me — too many to mention. TIME points out the Jesus moment with John Turturro, totally great – I guess I’d have to put the meeting with Larry (“You’re killing your father, Larry”) right at the top. But I’d also add Burn After Reading to this list, and I’d include the moment that the crew working in the gym finds the CD and tries to figure out what’s on it, “It just lying there, right on the floor there.” Burn After Reading, as I’ve said before, is going to be a cult favorite eventually – the same thing happened with The Big Lebowski – no one really admired it until about five years later and then it became arguably the most popular film by the Coens. “It was just lying there, on the floor there.”
