Three Minutes of Invictus?

This Variety story says that at the end of an awards ceremony this past week at the Lyon Film Festival in France, they showed a three minute clip of Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. Eastwood was there to receive the Prix Lumiere. Strangely enough, there is no more information about it. Anywhere. But somewhere out there footage of Invictus has been seen.

Just 3 words about this movie:
GO, FREEMAN, GO!

If Invictus is a great film that would be seven in a row for Eastwood after Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, the two war films in one year followed by two more great films the period piece Changeling and Gran Torino. When was the last time somebody made seven great films in seven years straight?
Also each film is completely different from the other. Even the two war films are different. Letters From Iwo Jima looks like classic war film from the 1940′s. Flags Of Our Fathers has a fragmented narrative. How does Eastwood film so fast? It is not like doing Lord Of the Rings three times over. Not that LOTR is not a great trilogy. It is.

Nelson Mandela will be the star of the Oscar ceremony next year.

Now, i think that next year in the category “Best Leading Actor” it will be a tough race between Colin Firth in “A Single Man” and Morgan Freeman in “Invictus”. Let’s see…

I know someone who went to the Lyon festival, so the next time I bump into him, I can ask him what he thought of the “Invictus” clip … ?

@ Ashwin Pinto
If Gran Torino and Changeling are great films to you, I have some derivatives you may find apetizing.
Ryan Adams says:

Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
Changeling
Gran Torino
There’s one of those I’d watch again without needing to be paid a substantial sum in cash or Criterions.
UncleVanya says:
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8:27pm
I would re-watch Mystic River, but I still want the Criterions…ALL OF THEM!
Ryan Adams says:
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8:36pm
ha! you have chosen wisely, good knight.
there would a measure of poetic justice if someone would offer me this to re-watch Letters.
Roy says:

Third day of Eastwood bashing in a row, Ryan
Did you learn nothing about pissing him off from Gran Torino?
On topic, it’d be nice to see a trailer from this soon. I still think Clooney’s chances for best actor are better, but the role is an oscar magnet
UncleVanya says:
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8:46pm
I wouldn’t nescessarily see it as poetic justice, but more as compensation for time cynically robbed from a sentient being.
Ryan Adams says:

“the role is an oscar magnet”
Somewhere there’s this memo on file:
2/14/2005
To: AMPAS
From: Clint & Morgan
Re: Untitled Mandela Project
We’re thinking of doing some sort of bio about Mandela. Plz reserve our front row seats at the Kodak for 2010. kthxbye.
Roy says:

Hey, to be fair, I think Eastwood’s best shot at an acting oscar was lost to someone playing a role that was ridiculously stereotypical oscar bait (blind…dead..famous…musical innovator)
But you’re not the biggest fan of that particular Eastwood movie, to be fair
I’d still back Clooney next year, all the same.
Ryan Adams says:
Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8:51pm
“…time cynically robbed…”
Do I get credit for the weeks between nomination and when I finally got to see what all the hoopla was about?
Only BP nominee in recent memory that was nearly impossible to find in a theater before Oscar night. But that’s all part of the strategy, isn’t it?
Ryan Adams says:

You have a point, Roy.
And Unforgiven is unassailable.

I wish there were ways that stupid verbal cliches like “in the bag”, “slam-dunk” and “Oscar magnet” could be physically inserted into the users’ orifice (of his or her choice) that would result in such pain that the usage would stop. Not seeing such a cure over the horizon, I will take solace with my box-set of Kurosawa (Criterion) movies, coveted by next-to-noone…except Ryan.
Roy says:

You’re that mean old uncle that people invite over on holidays out of moral obligation, aren’t you?
You, I, and, I imagine, everyone discussing the film knows that “oscar magnet”, cliched as it is, is just a short hand way of mentioning the fact that AMPAS tend to consistently nominate certain kinds of roles.
Leave my orifice alone and climb back up yours
UncleVanya says:

I am not mean , nor am I old, and I can assure you that I have no interest in you, your mind, or any other thing that you claim is yours.

Lmao @ #13! Too funny! However, no guts no glory so I stand by my predix this won`t win shit. This ain`t your typical Oscar-bait Mandela who fights for freedom, bones hot chicks in prison, has a homicidal wife and then spring chicken wife, etc, etc. You know, stuff that AMPAS loved about Ray and other soap operaish biopics. This is soccer, baby, and does AMPAS care about soccer? They are Americans! Of course not! They may go into the “WTF is this?” shock. Expecing Ghandi Two starring Mandela and getting Damned United starring Jason Bourne. Or something.

Anyone playing a character named Mandela is winning as Oscar. Point black period.
Meryl and Morgan better start preparing their speeches right now before the deal is sealed. Next year’s Oscars is going to belong to the old folks who can actually act; the respectable veterans. I was getting sick of these one hit wonders who win all the time like that spanish actress who should not be named.
Otto says:

I don’t want Freeman to win just because I’m sick of actors in biopics winning Oscars. Just look at this decade winners! Jaime Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sean Penn, Marion Cotillard, Reese Witherspoon, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman…! I mean, COME ON! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with those performances, but it’s just so predictable. It’s a formula. So I wouldn’t be particularly happy to see Meryl Streep and Freeman winning next year (unless they deserve it).
And Afrika, that spanish actress who should not be named happens to be working since she was 16 and has starred in succesful movies, so I don’t think you can call her a one hit wonder.

While I don’t see eye to eye with you when it comes to that spanish actress, I do agree with your assertion about biopics. I mean anyone who plays Mandela or Martin Luther King Jr., at this point, is destined to win an Oscar. As you said, it’s a tired formula
However, I am looking forward to Morgan/Meryl triumph in next year’s Oscars. I could not think of more deserving thespians

soccer? WTF?
I’m STILL mad about the final score of that game – I HATE the Springboks.
Roy says:
Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 2:35pm
No, rugby’s played in a lot of countries-particularly Europe, Austrailia, New Zealand and South Africa. Probably has even less of a profile in the States than soccer, though.

rugby is very huge in south africa FYI
I’m sure Eastwood called Freeman a N*gger all the time during filming….jokingly of course

you americans are all the same! just plain stupid! Bambi, you especially LOL….Rugby is huge in South Africa, and are currently ranked no.1 in the world. In fact, Rugby is more popular than any other American sport around the world. It is the 3rd most popular sport on this planet, played professonally in over 50 countries.
And WalterNeff, you only hate the Springboks because you wish you were South African. Envy and Jealousy just makes you another little cry baby of an All Black choker!!! hahahaha
