I kind of like it better when they announce winners one or two at a time. But then I’m a bit of a masochist. Such sweet torture!

Starting to look like The Hurt Locker might become the movie to beat.
Kate Winslet says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:21am
I knew that Meryl would pick up critics’ awards for playing Julia Child. Maybe it really was the best acting performance of 2009 by a female! She will win her Oscar next year and Sean Penn gets to hand her the prize. Go Meryl!
j says:

More supp sweeping.
If even the critics are choosing the Big Movie Star Frontrunners (as opposed to Mulligan/Sidibe or Firth/Bridges), given their usual more off-the-track choices…might the Academy be even more inclined to go mainstream than usual?
However…YAY STREEP! First win here in over 2 decades. Looking good for her. I guess Clooney’s win helps Up in the Air over the other contenders, so that’s good I suppose as I doubt Bright Star/Single Man have even 0.1% chance of a win.
Summer Hours isn’t even eligible is it for the Oscars? So if it keeps going like this, even the biggest otherwise, White Ribbon, will be frontrunner with an asterisk.
Congrats to Sasha, who’s been pushing In the Loop for forever.
Ugh Fox.

Blech!!! Horrible winners, although at least Meryl Streep took a well deserving win! Hurt Locker needs to stop. Not a worthy film, not in the slightest.

Great for the Hurt Locker and Kathryn Bigelow! We need more women directors! I am happy for Meryl Streep and Fantastic Mister Fox…
daveylow says:

It’s official. The Hurt Locker is the most overrated film of the year.
But seriously if The Hurt Locker wins Best Picture at the Oscars, I doubt if it will lead to people running to see it at the theaters. Not that should be the point of the awards.
But it certainly isn’t the reason viewers will watch the Oscars–to see The Hurt Locker win top awards.
New York critics are just as unoriginal in their thinking as other critics across the country. The only interesting wins – In the Loop and Fantastic Mr. Fox, when they could have chosen Up
WalterNeff says:

It’s a bingo!
fs20rh says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:29am
hopefully this will mean they will actually give The Hurt Locker a wide release because it only played in like 500 theaters at its peak and made 12 million dollars so the majority of the country is going to be like “What the hell is The Hurt Locker” sounds like a bad horror film. This movie deserves to be seen.
Pat says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:30am
Yay Meryl Streep!!!

“But seriously if The Hurt Locker wins Best Picture at the Oscars, I doubt if it will lead to people running to see it at the box office.”
Of course not, daveylow. It will have been out on DVD for over a month by the time the Oscars roll around.
Have you even SEEN “The Hurt Locker”?
Dorothy Porker says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:30am

Joschi says:

i’ve seen “The Hurt Locker”, Kevin. And i also thought it’s very overrated!
Other Ryan says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:31am
So happy for Meryl! Not that I don’t think Mo’Nique and Waltz deserve this (they do! and probably the Oscars as well!), but I do wish other supporting actors win a few of the other critic awards.
Also Fantastic Mr. Fox won LA and NY. Ooh. Interesting!
Robert says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:33am
I’m kind of surprised NYFC went with Clooney, although I’m not exactly sure why I’m surprised. And yes, it looks like this positions Streep as the definite Oscar frontrunner for Best Actress. I sort of suspected that beforehand, but this really gives her an added boost. I thought NYFC would favor Mulligan.

“It’s official. The Hurt Locker is the most overrated film of the year.”
LOL, it’s been official since July. I can’t think of a possible, legit winner here that would have been more undeserving. There are AT LEAST ten better films this year. Any one would have been a better choice, and a more inspired one, too. Way to go NY.
Armand says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:34am
Lovin’ the love for The Hurt Locker, Bigelow, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Chris says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:35am
I recently saw The Hurt Locker for the first time and I liked it. However, it’s no way worthy as a Best Picture or Director winner. I agree with other people, very overrated.
salma says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:36am
Sasha, the picture is so fitting. Great thought!
I hope Meryl win her third Oscar. Winning NYFCC means a lot…
daveylow says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:37am
I don’t think Streep will win SAG or BAFTA this year.
It will be interesting to see if she keeps building momentum as the season progresses. I’d like to know if Streep won by a large margin.
At least the NY critics kept it interesting by choosing Clooney instead of Bridges but I’d like someone to be brave enough to give Firth an award, who truly deserves one.
The Natural says:
Monday, December 14, 2009 at 10:37am
Yep. The constant Bigelow wins reek of straight-up sexism. Oooooh look, a woman made a big, manly war film! I didn’t know ladies could play the game like us! Give her the award! WHO CARES IF SHE’S A WOMAN!!! She doesn’t deserve it!
