And Kris Tapley at In Contention says 2009 is the best year of filmmaking the decade has seen.

2009 has been pretty badass, but I think 2007 was a better year for movies. No Country for Old Men, In Bruges, Juno, Once, Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood, American Gangster, Eastern Promises, Michael Clayton, Charlie Wilson’s War, Hairspray, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I’m Not There, Gone Baby Gone…

Do I really have to go on?

2009 doesn’t have a lot of really bad movies. But it also doesn’t really have any great ones. I think the absence of crap is making people think this is a good year but it isn’t. The best of this year can’t compete with the best of the rest of the decade. Not even close. All the 2009 movies in contention, even the ones I’m rooting for, have problems. 2006 is my choice for best year.

2009 is definitely not the pinnacle of film in the 2000s.

2009 was better than last year, and I think the talk of it being a bad year is undeserved.

But 2007 was the best year of the decade. Jesse James, No Country, Once, Zodiac, There Will Be Blood, I’m Not There, 4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days.

People also forget that 2000 had a lot of remarkable films.

2005 was pretty good as well.

I think every year in film is the same: a few exceptionally great films that would qualify as “best picture” and the rest, pretty flawed films that don’t live up to your expectations, but may have some redeeming factors such as acting, costumes, a clever screenplay, and hypnotic music.

That being said, 2009 has been another very good year. Just had to keep my ears out and my eyes open.

2001 pretty good, not great (my pic would be Mulholland Dr.)

2002 it felt like big hollywood productions aka miramax, and i loved it. great year. (my pic would be Gangs of New York)

2003 another great year in movies. lots of great contenders. (my pic would be Master and Commander)

2004 pretty good all the way around. (my pic would be Sideways)

2005 not the best year so far this decade, but justice prevailed: (my pic would be Brokeback Mountain)

2006 a very good year in movies. (my pic would be Little Miss Sunshine)

2007 the darkest year in film (theme-wise), but none the less a wonderful and entertaining year. one of the very best this decade (if not, THE best!)(my pic would be There Will Be Blood)

2008 another great year in film. felt like 2002, very sugarcoated yet nostalgic hollywood (my pic would be Milk)

2009 so far so good. (so far my pic would be Up in the Air, so i would agree with Tom Brook here)

    Happy 2010 everyone!

Too bad Grosscious is on that list…but otherwise, pretty tame but fair. Up In The Air is good, definitely top ten, maybe top five for me. I’m not entirely sure how it beats Avatar and Hurt Locker, but I think it’s at least a valid opinion.

And yeah, 2007 was the best year. 2005 was fine, but the fact that Crash won kind of taints its legacy.

2009 has been the worst year for movies in this decade. 2007 was the absolute best.

I saw Lebanon at the London film fest and loved it, definitely in my top 10 of the year. It won the Golden Lion at Venice. It’s a drama depicting the lives of a few young Israeli soldiers in a tank on a mission during the war in Lebanon. The cinematography and sound are striking (almost all of what you see outside is through the tank periscope, and the sound of muted clunking metal and tracks moving across the dirt really gives a sense of being trapped in this small tank). It’s quite a horrifying anti-war tale. Unfortunately it hasn’t been released in the US yet so isn’t elgible for Oscars, and Israel chose Ajami as its foreign film submission.
