An Education leads BAFTA long lists

Posted on 01/07/10 106 Comments

Over 6000 members of the British Academy vote in three rounds to decide the winners of the Orange British Academy Film Awards. The long list is the result of Round One voting, which reduces the eligible films down to fifteen in each category. Round Two voting will reduce these fifteen contenders down to the five nominees. Asterisks denote the top 5 (or in some cases 6) voted by each chapter of the Academy in this first round.

This has to be Nine’s official death certificate.
No best picture, no director, no cinematography, no production design and NO JUDI DENCH AT THE BATFA’S LONG LIST!!!
At this point the Weinsteins will (more) be happy to get the kind o technical nominations Memoirs of a Geisha got in 2005.

Dear God, even Elizabeth:The Golden Age made the long list.

It’s supposed to be the branch who make clear the choices for Leading or Supporting for Cotillard (Nine) and Laurent (Basterds). Clearly they vote both in Leading. I think both are in serious risk for to miss the cut right now. Last year, Winslet choice was corrected here with two nominations for Leading.

I haven’t seen yet Nowhere Boy.

And yes, if BAFTA don’t support Nine, it probably means Nine is officially dead in the race. Sad. (Please, I think it’s a joke to say Star Trek or Moon or many others still in contention are better than Nine, really… I can’t understand this hate campaign from the end of season… early in the year, everybody who saw Nine were absolutely pleased and amazed.)

I’d love to see Mariah Carey as a BAFTA presenter.
She reminds me a little of James Mason as Norman Maine.

Interesting to note how many categories District 9 had an asterisk for.. Though who knows how accurate this would be regarding the final nominees. Encouraging nevertheless, now let’s see if Blomkamp gets a DGA nomination in a few hours!

Wow, I just realized The Lovely Bones has 11 mentions – probably won’t be nommed for more than actress/sup. actor, though.

Aren’t the final nominees for Best British Film chosen by committee or something? I seem to recall that.

  24. 24

    ukwatcher says:
    Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 4:41am

@Craig Z – enough chapter members might have attended the screenings, cast & crew votes help, but screeners were only sent out this week and it clearly had an effect on major categories. a few years ago million dollar baby was completely absent from major categories for exactly same reason, no screeners, not because it was a bad film. not enough people saw it and the rules at BAFTA are made very clear to members – not to vote for films they haven’t seen

  25. 25

    Craig Z says:
    Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 4:49am

They have obviously seen it if they nominated it for Actress(which is classified as a major catagory), Sup. Actress, Music, Sound, Makup ect. Otherwise they would be voting for something they haven’t seen.

  28. 28

    Ryan Adams says:
    Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 5:02am

I think ukwatcher’s point is that enough BAFTA members saw Nine who agreed more unanimously about its strongest categories — so that even a small percentage of members were enough to give Nine the edge it needed in some areas. But he believes not enough members saw it to overcome the force of the full BAFTA membership who stood more solidly behind other major titles.

Yeah indeed ! With 10 nominations (and in the top 5 for original screenplay and music) and screenings starting in LA, that’s really good news for the amazing Moon.
I Hope Sam Rockwell will manage to get some attention (but he should have been nominated for The assassination of Jesse James. Well if it was up to me every single person involved in this film would have won. The assassination was just the best film of 2008. So underrated and yet an absolute classic. It seems like Rockwell’s career strategy involves starring in the best ignored films year after year. Silly sausage.
