What?? No Waltz??
Sam Juliano says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 11:31am
Yes indeed.
Those are PRECISELY the five that the NAACP would tab for Best Picture. Fair enough.

Saldana as Supporting? Really now? Really?
[Questioning the category placement NOT the nomination.]
Chris Price says:

FUCK YES!!!! Black Dynamite gets recognized somewhere!! Its unfortunate that they didn’t nominate Michael Jai White for Best Actor as well, and no Picture nomination? But still, pretty awesome you guys! Good job!
Chance says:

I voted for Black Dynamite (I think) in the AD voting.

LOL, 2012 getting acting nominations.
Free says:

While the 2012 nominations are pretty ridiculous, I will say that all the ladies from PRECIOUS were very good. It’s a shame they only get noticed (and by ‘they,’ of course I mean Patton and Carey) when you obliterate their actual competition.
Ana Maria says:

Doesn’t the NAACP realize they only undermine themselves when they desperately nominate actors from 2012, Obsessed, and The Taking of Pelham? Just dumb.
JoeyG says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 12:01pm
Why would anyone question Saldana getting in for Supporting as opposed to Lead? I think it makes no sense for her to be considered anything else.
Zach says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 12:10pm
They should have nominated Jamie Foxx for The Soloist, not Law Abiding Citizen.
fromchelseamanhattan says:

Why taking these awards so seriously???? Look at the nominations! May be they should have less than 5 nominations unless they have 5 good nominations!
Abhi says:

That’s a good best actress and supporting actress lineup. Also, The Bling Side. Love the typo

Sandra Bullock got nominated? Since when is she a colored person?
I’m disappointed that there wasn’t more love for Notorious. It was underrated IMO.

OMG these nominations suck! As if black people were honoring the best in black cinema. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to scrape up worthy nominations for any race or demographic. Maybe every 10 years, but not every 1 year.
Jonathan says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 1:57pm
At least Anthony Mackie will get something.
Candice Frederick says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 1:58pm
finally Paula Patton gets her due. Not sure why Idris Elba is heer for the wretched Obsessed. same goes for black dynamite. that movie is everythign that’s wrong with films today. also thrilled to see zoe saldana here, as well as american violet (which was one fo my faves of this past yr)

You listed Quinton Aaron as being nomiated for “The Bling Side”.
Sasha Stone says:

Thanks. I got the list from Kris’ site so it’s his typo, lol.
Cris says:

There’s no way Zoe Saldana was supporting. Her role was as important as Sam Worthington’s. By this logic, one would say Julianne Moore in “The End of the Affair” or Gwyneth Paltrow in “Shakespeare in Love” were supporting.
And how come Anika Noni Rose got a nomination for “The Princess and the Frog” when all she she did was voice a cartoon?
FromChelseaManhattan says:

I am curious what some people will say if Sandra Bullock wins Best Actress here!!! I dont even understand why she got nominated! Isnt she the only non-black actor/actress nominated for acting? I wonder why!
Morton Fan says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 2:36pm
Beyonce was snubbed for her amazing performance in Obsessed.
Ha, that’s what I was thinking. I thought she was trying to be the Queen of Everything and win all four major entertainment awards, so I bet her ego took a really big blow today that she couldn’t even get nominated here while her co-star did.
FromChelseaManhattan says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 2:43pm
Why not nominating Ali Larter in Obsessed??? If Sandra Bullock got nomination, Ali must have been eligible too…Or may be Sandra has some black genes that we dont know but Ali doesnt:)
Alper says:

She is extraordinary Sandra Bullock. I know you think she will not win an Oscar but please think Julia Roberts,Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow. Did they really deserve best actress Oscar?
FromChelseaManhattan says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 3:41pm
I think none of them were against 16th time nominee Meryl Streep!
I think Julia Roberts was much better in Erin Brockovich than Sandra Bullock. And that year Julia won many critics awards before Oscar. This year, Sandra won nothing yet!
Also, Julia was in a much better and critically acclaimed movie.
Gwyneth was in the best picture winner and had the support from Weinsteins.
To be honest I still dont know how Reese won over Felicity Hoffman that year. But even her movie was much more critically acclaimed than the Blind Side.
And, Halle Berry was African American and they wanted to give both Best Actress and Actor to African Americans that year!
John Oliver says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 3:53pm
In reference as to why Bullock was nominated, I think she has some Mexican heritage.
FromChelseaManhattan says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 4:00pm
Or may be she is an African American actress who played blonde Southerner very realistically

Saldana nomination is a category fraud! She`s a bone fide leading lady. Weaver and Rodriguez are supporting. Congrats to Zoe on her first recognition, though.
Rachel says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 7:01pm
Zoe Saldana is just fine in supporting. I don’t see how she’s a bona fide lead. She’s integral to the story, yes. But I wouldn’t put her in the same category as Bullock, Sidibe or even Streep. She’s never in a scene without Worthington. It’s not her story. I’d compare her to Cate Blanchett in Benjamin Button. She wouldn’t be fraud in either category.
Dave says:

So happy Paula and Mariah got recognized, Paula in particular. She really should be in consideration for awards beyond these.
Mike says:
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 7:38pm
Gwyneth won over Meryl when Meryl was up for One True Thing in 1998. I think Gwyneth deserved it.

I think that the NAACP needs to open up the concept of the “CP” in their acronym. Why just limit it to African Americans? I understand that the NAACP has a particular history, but I think at this moment in time they could consider all racialized minorities in the US. Surely if they can nominate Amreeka for best independent film, then they could also nominate it for best film and some of the acting awards. I think it’s time the organization took another look at its mission statement.
KBJr. says:

It’s been said before, but it bears repeating: Some of these nominations are downright embarrassing, further rendering awards bodies and shows like this pointless.
Lenny Kravitz in “Precious” as Best Supporting? Even Mariah, who graces us in three flimsy scenes of the film (two of which she is over shadowed by better actresses) doesn’t merit any awards attention.
I’m curious who thought Idris Elba’s performance in “Obsessed” could be described as “Best” anything…and since when is Sandra Bullock “colored”?
I think the NAACP should restructure it’s awards show (just like BET should)…instead of nominating the OBVIOUS winner and filling out the rest of the spots, why not just award the best performance and present it at the show. Is there really any suspense anyways? Fill in the rest of the show with music performances and honors and call it a night. With the current structure they depreciate their award and the winner by showing the world what WEAK competition there really was.
