Up has transcended the Animated category which opens the door for a possible Best Picture nom. Really happy District 9 got a nom!

Can we officially declare Nine dead now? Love this list and would love to see it repeated come nomination morning!!

Thank god Avatar made it. I was sure it was going to get snubbed! Kudos to Trek, Up and District 9.

Three unmistakably sci-fi features make the cut; definitely one of the best years for science fiction in all of film history.

God bless you, Med.
Also: should I be surprised AN EDUCATION made the cut? It should certainly make the Academy’s list, but I’m a bit surprised a film of its size made the PGA. Terrific, terrific film.

And yes, Chris, I believe NINE is dead. What will replace it? I pray not THE BLIND SIDE. Perhaps DISTRICT 9? Made a killing at the box office, and with a PGA in hand..?

Nine is dead. UP may just be a serious contender to take the top prize. As for District 9, can Blomkamp pull of a DGA nomination? That would make things very interesting.
Ken says:
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 6:17am
Hopefully this is Nine’s demise.
Also it really sucks that The Messenger didn’t have a good studio behind it. For that matter, Moon too. Those are two great movies that NOBODY saw and they have close to 0 awards momentum.
Bruce says:

What a wonderful year for SciFi. LOTR broke the oscar barrier for fantasy, lets hope they will break new ground this year in SciFi. Give Bigelow the Directing Oscar but for the love of 2001, give it to SciFi. To borrow a line from Rafiki, “It is time!”

It’s funny, I saw Up in the Air and though it is a good film and should win the oscar for screenplay, It just didnt seem like BEST PICTURE quality. Idk maybe Im crazy, but I am getting sick of the whole Up in the Air vs Hurt Locker stuff.
Glenn says:

“Star Trek” FFS what is so radical about that movie? Have people never seen lens flares before? If that gets a Best Picture nomination then the expansion to ten will have been a mistake. Ranking it alongside all those fine movies (well, except for Invictus) is disappointing.
daveylow says:
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 6:25am
I would have rather have seen The Messenger on this list instead of Invictus. And Fantastic Mr. Fox somewhere.
I guess Fox is not going to win the animation award this year. Too much love for Up.
I didn’t see The Prisoner but that was panned by the critics. It looked awful.
Only four documentaries?
I hope Star Trek wins the PGA. That would show everybody!

Hollywood is a bunch of weirdos. last year, TDK couldn`t get a nomination and this year it looks like they are going to lavish their love on two or three sci fi movies. It`s always extreme with them. Either complete shut out or lets-hugs-all-trees.
Ken says:
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 6:31am
daveylow: The Prisoner remake was absolutely terrible. I’m not exaggerating, it was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen on TV. The only redeeming quality is Ian McKellen’s performance. Terrible nomination.
Benito Delicias says:
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 6:31am
Glad that not only have I seen all ten movies but I only have one complaint and that is the inevitable Invictus mention. Nowhere near deserving as the others, but it is what it is.
Great list.
How is Nine dead? Haven’t seen it, but District 9 and Star Trek are here. Don’t expect those two to show up at the Oscars, maybe one, not both. Deserving yes, but these are the people that nominated Harry Potter 1 and Shrek, they love big budget productions that go well across the board, so Star Trek might have been a given.
This is good news for District 9, but for Star Trek, it just proves a point.
If were going by this list, for the good of our predictions, Nine is still very much alive.
Stefan says:
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 6:32am
I can live with the list, but 500 Days of Summer, Moon and In the Loop instead of Invictus, Up and An Education would have made my day…..
Joao Garcia says:

If these are the Oscar nominations, the ratings are gonna get a lot higher. I think District 9 has a good shot now that Nine didn’t succeed quite well.
THERE ARE 7 LOCKS.
Now, Up is looking very likely.
The 2 last spots will be a fight between:
- DISTRICT 9
- JULIE & JULIA
- A SERIOUS MAN
- NINE
- (500) DAYS OF SUMMER
- STAR TREK

Nice to see the Sci-Fi love, even if I’m not a big fan of Avatar, or even less of a fan of District 9. Hooray for Star Trek. I still doubt it’ll get a foot in the door at the Oscars, but I’d love to see it happen.

I love love love the sci-fi love. I’m especially happy that District 9 made it in. I’m a bit bummed that 500 Days of Summer didn’t make it, but hopefully it’ll still find some Oscar love (Screenplay?) if not Best Picture. Though it’s hopes are not completely dead yet…
filmboymichael says:

Nine may be dead (I don’t think it is entirely even though it was a snore), it’s nice to see that 9 might still have a shot at a nomination for best animated film….

Benito,
Nine is dead based on pretty bad reviews and even worse Box Office.PGA loves to nominate musicals. If a movie like Dreamgirls with great Box Office, passionate supporters AND a PGA nom couldn’t get nominated then I seriously doubt Nine will without those things. Expect either District 9, Crazy Heart or (500) Days to take it’s place at the Oscars.

I don’t get all this snubbish The Blind Side hate. Did you even see it or you just decided its rubbish because a comedienne is the lead and it has an easy-to-pick-on (although true) story ? People – and some critics, too – LOVE that film for a reason.
Good news is, that the Academy is much more sentimental than PGA, so it still has a shot there.
med,Ben ? Have you seen it ?

Not as interested in the snub of Nine as I am about the inclusion of 9 in Animated! Sad that it had to be at the expense of Cloudy, but I’m thrilled that the best animated film of the year got recognized and might have a chance to get nominated for an Oscar if it can knock something else out. At least it got nominated here.
And three sci-fi films, especially ones as good as those three, is great, but what about A Serious Man? Maybe keep District 9, and swap out Star Trek for A Serious Man? That could work.

Thanks for Star Trek and District 9. #2 – As for the Blind Side bashing….that was a GOOD movie. The public enjoyed it even if YOU didn’t.
I didn’t see Star Trek in the movie, saw it online, and now wish I had because it was just a very well produced, directed, acted sci-fi reboot. Great visuals and great fighting scenes.

Very nice list, I thought Dist. 9 had a fighting chance to get in but very surprised by the Star Trek inclusion (in a very happily surprised way). I can live with the Invictus and the An Education nominations b/c Avatar, Ingl. Basterds, Star Trek, Hurt Locker, Up, and Dist. 9 are all on my Top 10 for the year. I liked Up in the Air a lot (esp. the script and Anna Kendrick).
So, if this is the 10 no serious complaints.

I agree with Bambi’s statement about the Academy: “Hollywood is a bunch of weirdos. last year, TDK couldn`t get a nomination and this year it looks like they are going to lavish their love on two or three sci fi movies. It`s always extreme with them. Either complete shut out or lets-hugs-all-trees.”
It’s all or nothing with them. And at times, it feels like they are a day late and a dollar short. Just look at the Best Original Song nominees in the 1977. They completely overlook the disco songs of The Bee Gee’s in “Saturday Night Fever” in favor of other nominees like “You Light Up My Life” or “Candle on the Water.” The Bee Gees songs helped to define the disco genre. Then the following year they praise the lackluster disco hit “Last Dance” from “Thank God It’s Friday.” The Academy always seems to be just behind the times.

Phantom, The Blind Side was a schlocky, poorly written movie that happens to tell a nice, and heartwarming story that makes people feel better about themselves. It’s relatively harmless, and certainly isn’t a bad movie, but it’s just a decent movie audiences connected with. The whole white, self-described nice Christian family following their values and doing something nice for the less fortunate is a story that similar families in the real world can see and feel less guilty about themselves. I mean, the movie actually has the line, “You’re changing that boy’s life,” “No, he’s changing ours.” It’s not awards worthy in my mind.

“Up has been a lock for about 6 months now lol.”
-Yeah, I don’t understand why people suddenly think UP is “likely” now. Whether NINE, LOVELY BONES or INVICTUS had all been good, it would have made the list. Now, it’s one of the locks.
I can appreciate the sci-fi love, even though I didn’t love DISTRICT 9 like everyone else. THE MESSENGER deserves a Picture nod.
Also, where the fuck is the love for Ponyo? 9 and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS are not – I repeat, not – better films.

You are entitled to your opinion and I’m entitled to mine. But that movie was the biggest Box Office surprise last year and connected to people like only a very few movies could in the past. And that should be acknowledged if the Academy doesn’t wanna completely alienate the public because right now they seem rather out of touch with the audience (and I guess last year’s infamous-The Dark Knight-snub was the last straw for a lot of people).
And don’t read something into it, that isn’t there, I don’t say that for example Transformers II should be a bp nominee because its BO, that was a huge marketing machine, while The Blind Side’s amazing success (230-250M at least in the US-theaters) was basically due to solely its incredible WOM.

Stard Trek and Avatar are not bad movies, but Away we go, The messenger, and specially Two lovers and A serious man are far superior…But, anyway, it’s not a surprise. And more after people weeping last year about the absence of The dark night ( a good movie, nothing else) among the five best pictures in the oscars.

I’d be very surprised if “The Blind Side” managed to pull off a BP nomination, at this point. I thought its chances were greater as a BP nominee with PGA, since PGA in the past has sometimes nominated an unexpected hit with huge box office (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”). But thankfully, PGA didn’t even nominate it with 10 slots.
Still, I doubt the PGA list will match the Oscar list exactly. The PGA nominees and the BP Oscar nominees often had a difference or two even when there were only five nominees. But I still think “The Blind Side” is probably done as a BP candidate. Not that I was ever convinced it had much of a chance in the first place.
@ 21, Bambi:
But didn’t “The Dark Knight” get a PGA nomination last year? I seem to remember that the guilds showered love upon it (PGA, DGA). The Academy rejected it as a BP candidate.
