The WGAs will start around 5pm, California time and go until 7pm. That is just a couple of hours from now. As we already wrote in our preview, the general consensus appears to be that Mark Boal’s The Hurt Locker will win Original Screenplay, and Up in the Air will win Adapted. This is how it is expected to go. If it doesn’t go this way, the race will shift. For instance, if Jim Cameron’s Avatar wins for best original screenplay? That will give the blockbuster a little more credibility in terms of getting some respect from the writers. At any rate, since many of the screenplays nominated for the Oscar (chart here) weren’t eligible for the WGA, we have to assume all bets are off for the Oscars.
Meanwhile, the BAFTAs will be taking flight tomorrow around the same time. You can follow us on Twitter for updates, @awardsdaily, or you can go straight to the source, @baftaonline. They will be tweeting to winners in real time (I think). The show itself will be tape-delayed for the BBC here Pacific time. One of my Twitter pals @Pablo_88 found the site that may livestream it, which is here.
