The Cinema Audio Society announces their award for Best Sound tonight at my favorite LA hotel.
46th Annual Cinema Audio Society Awards

As you can see by their history, there is a lot of match-up for wins. This is due mainly to the fact that the entire Academy votes for Sound, while the Sound guild actually votes on the sound team involved and their efforts. The same goes for Costumes, Art Direction, Makeup, etc. That said, this is a two-film contest probably. As usual, it gets down to The Hurt Locker – a war movie and the kind that has been known to win Sound in the past, and Avatar, which is the more popular film with the general public and thus, will probably win this Guild award in a walk. The Oscars will probably be another two-way contest, but no one knows how it will turn out. Some say The Hurt Locker will win it, others say Avatar.
I guess the point here is that the CAS can’t really be a good predictor for Oscar. You are still on your own for the final contest. If The Hurt Locker wins, that shows unified support for the film. If Avatar wins it confirms what we already suspected.
