Posted on 03/11/10 34 Comments

Ranker.com has listed their top ten bitch slaps in film history. My three favorites are There Will Be Blood, The Godfather and Chinatown.

Mr. Blonde: Eddie, you keep talking like a bitch, I’m gonna slap you like a bitch.
Sam Spade: When you’re slapped, you’ll take it and like it.
Harry [Roy Scheider]: There’s something about your face that makes me want to slap the shit out of it.

God, I love that scene from THERE WILL BE BLOOD. The whole film, actually, is amazing. Thanks for posting this, Sasha. It makes me want to go and rewatch the film right now.

That Chinatown bitch slap is incredibly uncomfortable to watch. I always found it to be overtly sexist for some reason. It’s just disturbing and I refuse to ever watch it again…and the movie was directed by Roman Polanski. SHOCKER!!!!!!!!! SMH

The better bitch slap in TWBB is when Daniel if fed up with Ely and takes him down in the oil in front of the other workers. Ely so deserved it!

I’m glad that the list included “In the Heat of the Night” and “Airplane!”

It’s too bad that the backhanded prayer slap by a priest to an hysterical male passenger in “Airport” was not included, nor any movie with Bette Davis and/or Joan Crawford.

For purely comedic value, there’s that one guy who slaps a boy scout in “Mr Smith Goes to Washington”

They should have included that fantastic BIATCH slap from In the Bedroom. Sissy Spacek just so unexpectedly gives Tomei a bitch slap for the ages.

The movie that I am surprised that didn’t make the list was In The Bedroom. Sissy Spacek slapping Marisa Tomei set the tone for where the moviewas going. I don’t think it was better then In the Heat of the Night or Airplane! but I it would have made my top 10 list.

It’s hard to top In the Heat of the Night for greatest bitch-slaps simply because of its cultural significance. It still sends shivers down the spine today. Too bad Steiger has to ruin it by being his usual hammy self.

There was an ante-bellum Somerset Maugham film that had a wonderfully crude bitch slap scene, but for the life of me, I can’t remember which one.

This is a fun topic. Leave it to AFI to come up with a compilation scene, featuring many of those mentioned here:

Joan Crawford not only took it but dished it out:

    Bette Davis kept busy too:

Love love love Chinatown, that’s gotta be one of my favorite scenes in any film. I watched it again just the other day, that sure is one powerful film!

And I totally agree about In the Bedroom – that one really does stay with you, doesn’t it?!?

    Afrika

Th Chinatown-scene was too much for me, too.

    Ryan Adams

“Mommie Dearest: the whole movie was Bitchslap vs. Revenge of the Bitchslap.”

Good one:) I laughed my face off. The movie was tragic. It’s like Faye Dunaway’s payback time for Chinatown.

Scarlett vs. Prissy and Spacek vs. Tomei were truly memorable.

I’m with the MILDRED PIERCE fans. The fights between Crawford and Ann Blythe have my film class students screaming at the screen every semester. I only hope the upcoming mini-series can generate that kind of emotion.

    The Chinatown scene is amazing.

Always confused about the term “bitch slap”, as I thought it meant a fey slap to the face to someone not deserving a manly punch.

The whole term is actually very offensive so I’m wouldn’t be surprised if Afrika had to be administered some smelling salts whilst reading this thread.

Bitch Slap – 1. A slap to assert one’s dominance over another.

    2. A slap to correct the behavior of an inferior

etymology: refers to the practice of a pimp slapping a prostitute in his employ in order to break her spirit or punish poor behavior.

I thusly rule that In the Bedroom, while a great slap, is not a bitch slap. It’s a slap of grief, but there is no desire to dominate or correct, just hurt.

Ruby Dee whacking Denzel Washington in American Gangster. It helped get her an Oscar nomination for a very brief performance – her first nod after nearly 50 years as a film star. Maybe she ought to put the smack down more often.
