The Year of the Doc Continues with Tabloid

While it’s always unwise to group together the opinions of a few who were able to go to Telluride (if one could afford it, that is) because at some point the festival circuit begins to look like one big focus group or test screening. If you don’t trust focus groups or test screenings, you can’t really trust any old person who wanders into a film festival and shares their opinion. It is the same as valuing the opinion of someone in a forum (see below). It is valuable; it just isn’t everything.

This can’t be stated strongly enough.

At any rate, while there are bound to be mixed reactions to the two big films coming out of Telluride – The Way Back and Never Let Me Go – the one film that probably will do very well out of the fest will be Errol Morris’ Tabloid, capping off an already fabulous year for documentaries. Tabloid should do well, considering Errol Morris is fairly well known and established, and has become a bit of an icon of sorts. Follow him on Twitter and you’ll soon know why.
