I am a huge fan of VIRIDIANA, yet until I just read all these certain responses, I would not have guessed it. But it’s a great still for sure!

It is 100% certainly Viridiana folks – I watched my DVD, the scene is at just over the one hour mark. I freeze framed the scene to the exact point of the still.

The Exorcist. Although the hand looks young and the priest was not wearing a sweater…unless it is the younger priest..Jason Miller.

It may be Viridiana, have not seen it in a couple years though. I do know this, it is not Winter Light and it is not Through a Glass Darkly. Neither had close ups of crucifixes. If there is one thing I know it is the Silence of God Trilogy. Though that does look like the knife cross, especially with the other pieces lying on the table, which could only be Bunuel.

The object in question is a crucifix knife. The crucifix knife is in the film Viridiana, which was directed by Luis Buñuel.

I’m going to say “The Children’s Hour” since a lot of other plausible solutions were already said and it has that feel to it.

The scene comes at about 1:02 of Viridiana, but the hand is male – Francisco Rabal (Jorge in the film).

Just scanned the Bresson – didn’t think it was from there (the sweater not what the priest wore), and can’t find anything like it.
May scan the two Bergmans, but the cross looks Roman Catholic, not Lutheran (their crosses tend to be far simpler).
Other thoughts are Open City, a Bunuel film.
Hints:
Classic eliminates a lot of films.
It seems to be in black and white.
The hand may be female.
I suspect whoever it is isn’t a priest or minister.
The objects on the table seems to suggest wealth.
Just some initial thoughts, nothing definitive.
The focusing on objects though does suggest Bresson, though I can’t recall anything like this in A Man Escaped.

Before reading Stéphane commentary, don’t know that Mulligan is currently on stage doing “Darkly”! Just read NY Times review. Sounds amazing. The photo is probably from the movie too.

Considering Carey Mulligan’s current theatre foray, maybe Bergman’s “Through a Glass Darkly”?
