joao mattos, totally with you man re: marisa tomei. i live in nyc and i see her all the time and she’s mad hot. she’s definitely the most underrated actress in hollywood. YES, she shouldve won for the wrestler over the overrated but more popular penelope cruz. ditto for her performance in “In the bedroom” . she was roger ebert’s and the majority of the film critics’ choice to win but again , she’s not that popular. another thing… the great dane: thanks for pointing out why TF is there an “and” after evan rachel wood???!!! another overrated actress imo. is it coz she’s young(er) than tomei? marisa is a far better actress and wayyy hotter! hope she gets nominated over wood, if there’s justice in the world. peace

I, like a few others, am underwhelmed by the trailer, but I hope it’s just the trailer—and that the movie as a whole will indeed feel like, perhaps, the Michael Clayton of political thrillers. I still believe it holds promise on paper–despite the trailer. Great cast! Fantastic people all around!

Has anyone read the novel, The Nostalgist? This kind of reminded me of it.

Pretty sure Hoffman will be the most likely to get nommed, even more so than Gosling. The trailer reminded me so much of Michael Clayton haha. Also i’m gonna guess Clooney is getting nommed for everything minus acting this year, I know he has The Descendants, but I don’t know it sounds so similar to About Schmidt and Clooney is no Nicholson

This could be huge.

Ui, directing and performances seem to be superb. Looks big, can’t wait to see it.

I’m sorry to say I have to go with fielding on this one: this movie looks contrived in every sense.

Utterly cliched, from the directing and dialogue to the cast and their performances. Yawn.

Interesting that Wood of all people get the “And” billing in the trailer. She is not the biggest star or the biggest veteran of that bunch – and her part doesn’t look like a cameo. So there must be a reason for the “And” – can’t wait to find out why?

i dont get it gosling goes for supporting or leading or what?
Gosling is clearly the lead. He has top billing over Clooney, who is a bigger star and also the director.

Ivan
Law had six film credits in 2004. Those films averaged a 62 on metacritic.
Gosling will be in three films this year. CSL currently sits at a 68, a lower score but for a film which the most unanimous praise has actually come for Gosling. Then Drive and Ides are yet to be released, so there’s no real sum quantifiable critical data to assess; however, given the strong reviews since Cannes for Drive and the pedigree of those involved on Ides, I’d make the safe bet both will end up more critically acclaimed than CSL and push Gosling’s year average up.
In short, your comparison is off, because Gosling is starring in far less and more quality pics than those examples you gave.

Gosling is start to being over-exposed a la Jude Law in 2004 (Sky Captain, Closer, Alfie, The Aviator) or Hugh Jackman in 2006 (The Fountain, The Prestige, X Men 3) and this not work well for an oscar nomination.
I expect Philip Seymour Hoffman will be the scene stealer.

What a great cast.! I was a little down on the trailer though. I hope good things come out of this. I think Ryan was robbed of a nomination last year for Blue Valentine.

it looks like Clooney has taken notes from his time working on set of Michael Clayton.
Cannot wait to watch this. Fantastic cast.

I should add that Gosling is very self-effacing in interviews, comes around as a completely likable guy. He’s spent his time in independant movies making a name for himself, and he’s considered a great young talent.
Hollywood will want him to become a big star. It is through this film that they will annoint him.

I’ve been predicting an Oscar for Gosling for this film for awhile now. He’s going to have three big movies. Crazy Stupid Love is going to be a hit and it shows a completely different side to him. Drive will show yet another, more steely, side. And now your standard drama in film directed by the academy’s favorite human being, George Clooney.
I still don’t get why others haven’t jumped on the bandwagon.

Wait so Hoffman’s gonna win this year for this AND next year for “The Master”? Man, I feel bad for all other actors.

I think that this could be a very good film, but the trailer kind of looks like a jumbled mess. It’s like it’s trying to be a few different kinds of movie all in one. I dunno. I’ll see what the word for it is first I guess.

just me….. the subject matter asks for a response from me that feels pretty bruised.
otherwise…. it looks terrific. lots of Redford resonances.

I am pretty underwelmed by it. It looks like every other political thriller. Young guy torn between loyalties, about what he believes in. They even threw in a new girlfriend in as well to add to the forumula. Unless the movie is the “Michael Clayton” of political thrillers I have a hard time seeing this as a major oscar contender.
I don’t think it’s a political thriller.
Michael Clayton had a pretty formulaic trailer as well. Looked like every other corporate thriller. I think the caliber of cast is a good omen.
I hope I am wrong and it is good. I worry when there is too many big names in a movie as well, ala the remake of “All the King’s Men” Still would love for Clooney to direct a great film and Gosling to get some Academy love.

I love the work of so many people involved in this film, so why does this look so freakin boring?!? Then again, I thought much the same thing about Good Night and Good Luck, and was proven very wrong!

Looks pretty solid. Didn’t know it would be ass dark as it is presented. I can see best adapted screenplay, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Supporting Actor for Hoffman, Best Director for Clooney and a Best Picture nomination.

First a not very elegant commentary: dude, Marisa Tomei is much more hot now in her 40’s, than she was in her 20’s. Also a better actress (my favorite perfomance among the five nominated in the Oscar-2009 for Best Supporting Actress).
I wish there is more Jeffrey Wright in the trailer.
Saw Jennifer Ehle in it, probably playing Clooney’s wife. Hope she has a good role and lines. She is a terrific actress.

This movie looks like it could practically fill up the entire roster of Best Supporting Actor all by itself. For the longest time “The Ides of March” was my No Guts No Glory pick for this year’s Best Picture win. Looks like it might just happen.
And is anybody else surprised it took George Clooney THIS long to play a politician?
