There are elements that I like about it from an art direction, music and mood standpoint.

However, the whole “spidey” cam does not work for me here. I’m sure it sounded great in theory, but, um, in execution, no. It looks embarrassingly like a video game. Perhaps they will correct it more in post.

I just realize they probably felt pressured to put this out due to the Batman teaser coming out. Oh well.

Wow, this actually looks good. Forget the silly Raimi trilogy! This is going in depth on Parker’s family and playing up the drama. It doesn’t hurt that it was FILMED in 3D either ;)

Is anyone else confused why there is such a premature re-boot of this franchise? Did I miss something in regards to the one helmed by Tobey Maguire?

It looks like they are trying too hard. Sam Raimi’s trilogy (Third Mocie excluded) seemed effortless, and felt refreshing. This trailer makes it seem as if Marvel needed itself a series as dark as the Chris Nolan Batman Series. And while the inclusion of Peter Parker’s parents is a great addition, the Spider-Man we know and love (comics, film, or otherwise) was never as dark a character as Batman, and this trailer seems to want to change that. However this is just the first trailer and there is still a year until the film comes out, so I guess we will see.

I like it but there’s the strange sensation that I’m watching the trailer for a Chris Nolan Batman movie, except with Spidey. I’ll still see the movie though. It’ll prob be good, but I’m not sure if the Nolan/Batman dark and serious vibe is right for Spidey. What I loved about the Raimi movies was just the pure, unadulterated sense of fun. Spiderman 2 is my idea of the quintessential comic book movie because it totally relates the sense of being a Spidey fan and living through the character. I still want to see this Spiderman, but it does seem early for a reboot, especially to go back to the origin story.

That’s so true — I was rewatching The Rocketeer last night, and felt the same way. Total absence of angst or cynicism, but not sugary sweet either. So hard to achieve that clear-eyed corn-fed purity without tipping over into uncool cornballs.

On the other hand, I like the darkness closing in from every direction. Anything that inches us ever closer to hardcore R-rated superhero movies is ok by me.

If you thought the Raimi Spider-Man films were pretty good, but a little too much fun, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is for you!

Hey Columbia! If you want to make us eat when we aren’t hungry, you can (especially those of us who are Americans), but you have to at least make the product look tasty.

I don’t think the Mirror’s Edge building-jumping sequence is actually in the film. It looks like a trailer-only thing.

  21. Marshall1 says:

I think we should wait for the movie to come out before judging if it’s good or not. I think we have such fond memories of Spiderman 2 (Yep, I think the first one is ok, and the third one disastrous), that we view it unnecessary to re-boot the whole series. I get that, at first I was like WHY!!!!!???? Then the director came on board. Then Garfield (who was TERRIFIC in Boy A). Then Emma Stone. I’m sold!

Also, isn’t it a bit hypocritical of us to say why are they re-booting Spiderman series when Fincher is re-doing the Dragon Tattoo books? I just saw the first one and I think it’s very good. Granted, critics totally trashed the 2nd and 3rd one (apparently they have a different director). However, everyone’s willing to give Fincher a chance, but not Webber. Just saying…

I think you’re right, Gentle Benj. I can’t imagine them including that sequence in the film. And plus, I hope they don’t. It’s pretty shit.

This is the most redundant reboot imaginable. Raimi’s trilogy is much-loved, and the ink is barely dry on it anyway. Webb seems to be taking a darker approach, which I think is wise, as Raimi went in another direction, and this may perhaps give this film greater purpose. But unless a second trailer is more promising, I can’t get especially excited about this film yet.

Ryan, so true! I love The Rocketeer!

Marshall1, I think the trailer looks good so I’ll go see it. I think everybody’s observations are totally fair and I’m sure Sony knew that would come up. That said, the comparison to Dragon Tattoo is completely odious. First of all, the original adaptations are in Swedish. Secondly, I saw all three Swedish films and 2&3 are like TV movies. They’re terrible, even though Noomi Rapace is great in all of them. Remaking it in English is entirely appropriate and in no way analogous to Spiderman.

  27. Ryman says:

This looks 1000 times better than the Sam Raimi version, probably because there will be ACTING in this one. As much as I enjoyed the second one unlike the first or third one, I still couldn’t get over the fact that the acting was HORRIBLE in it (well except for James Franco). Raimi should stick to making his old and much better movies like A Simple Plan because that had GREAT acting in it. I know acting isn’t the only aspect for what a film is, but it at least makes the film look believable. This new one looks believable. I’m going to see it for sure.

I would be way more cynical of this way too soon reboot, if it wasn’t for the cast. Garfield and Stone could get me to see almost anything solo. Together=opening weekend! Also the supporting cast is aces.

  31. Marshall1 says:

Bebe, I don’t think the comparison is odious. The original is in Swedish, but it’s still a very good traditional detective story. I don’t think the language of the movie makes it alright to remake a movie right? Let the right one in was good. Let me in is better than expected. Ultimately, I don’t care if it’s a reboot if the right people are attached to like (just like Fincher in Dragon Tattoo).

Let’s get it straight, I’m not saying that Fincher re-doing it is as “pointless” as rebooting Spiderman (I will probably get stoned to death if I say that in here). I’m curious of what he’s going to do with the material. I just think we should be open to a different interpretation of Spiderman. We have a set notion of Spiderman to be this way, Superman should be this way, Batman should be this way. Yes, fundamentally, in the tradition of the comics, they are that way, but I’m still curious to see if Webber’s experiment would work. It might bomb like Ang Lee’s Hulk, but I don’t see why we should already think it’s a child that’s not wanted in the first place. It’s definitely NOT Sam Riami’s property. Only the second Spiderman by Riami could be considered a great movie.

Also, I also have to admit my huge HUGE crush on the talented Andrew Garfield:)

Amazing! Garfield looks spot on as Peter, and giving us a fresh take. Anybody notice the proto-goblin speaks in the trailer? “you dont have any idea what you really are”

    about some of the complaints

    1) They had to make the teaser so dark, because they want people to know its a different take on the story. There will be humor and lightness…there will be a great balance, but they want people’s first impression to be “wow, they are doing something different”

    2) The CGI at the end is not from the movie…it was done solely for the teaser, similar to TDKR’s CGI with the buildings crumbling.

next summer is going to be epic. 2 Fantastic super hero movies….both my favorite super heroes from childhood

Dragon Tattoo’s sequels, 2 & 3 WERE TV-movies. They wanted to see how well the first one goes in theaters before they decided if the sequels are going to be shown theatrically or on TV only. The whole trilogy runs like an hour longer on television still.

Not so sure a reboot was too soon, but telling an origin story again may have been. I sort of wish this took the Incredible Hulk route with Norton, and just have him be Spider-Man.

Oh well. At least there are plenty of other new elements here with more John Connors/Lizard, the lovely Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, and the mystery behind Peter’s parents.

@Ryman except for franco? are you serious? he was absolutely atrocious in every single scene involving his character in the spiderman movies. not defending the acting of the rest of them, but dear god franco had to be among the worst. every one of his performances screamed i’m just here for the money and i hate doing this. i’m glad raimi is done with this. i loved spiderman 2, but 3 sucked, and i want more drag me to hells.

anyway, i think amazing spiderman could be good (and seeing president bartlett was funny), but i have a feeling this is going to tank at the box office. who wants to see spiderman’s origin AGAIN? why did they think this was a good idea? make another spiderman movie with a different cast and outside the timeline of the raimi trilogy fine, but don’t give us the same story we just watched a few years ago. just a horrendous decision. this could get 100% on RT and a 90+ metacritic rating and i’d still wait for the dvd.

by the way, anyone else getting malware warnings every time they visit this site? been a few days now that avast picks up something every time i come here.

I think the comparison to Dragon Tattoo is totally apt. It was pretty mainstream even if it were in a foriegn language and that’s a stupid distinction to make anyways (just because it was good in a foreign language doesn’t mean it has to be Americanized), and if you think it wasn’t that good then you’d have to say the same for Spider-Man 3.
