Between Ides of March and The Descendants, George Clooney is theoretically in good shape for nominations in 5 Oscar categories this year.

I lol’d at Ryan’s pic 😀
I’m really looking forward to this film. It really has a good chance of making an impact at this year’s awards season. Also, political thrillers are my thing 😉

that’s a fair opinion Matt. it sounds like we agree on “leatherheads” and you have a higher rating of “dangers mind” and “good night” than i do. It doesn’t sound like we are that far apart. I didn’t think “dangerous mind” was terrible by any strech- but i didn’t have it as a top 30-35 film of 2002 (i agree pretty much with the “67” on metacritic).
“good night and good luck” was good and recognized by the academy. If you count foreign films i have anywhere from 15-20 films from 2005 that were better- i think pretty clear but that’s debatable as you say.
The only thing you say i really take issue with is Clooney holding his own as a director with with the likes of the lofty names like Cronenberg, Spielberg and others on your list…. If you truly think that i don’t know how likely i am of swaying you otherwise i can just say you will be the minority in that opinion (at least i think/hope)and if you take a long look at the accomplishments of clooney vs those lofty names…. i dunno…. i mean i consider spielberg and cronenberg as two of the top 25-40 directors of all time and i certainly don’t have clooney in that class. As for Fincher, he just got done directing a capital “M” Masterpiece “social network” which is leaps and bounds better than anything Clooney has accomplished as a director.
like i said, i hope i’m wrong and “ides of march” is awesome and clooney shows he’s a true artist behind the camera like eastwood, cassavettes and other actors turned directors have… i just think going on his track record of accomplishments as a director thus far this isn’t one of my 5-10 most anticipated films of the fall despite the great cast. We all should definitley “wait and see” with all of these films and judge them on their own merit i’m just saying i’m not getting my hopes up too high for this (i hope i’m surprised). i’m placing my high hopes in a little sturdier (sp) hands.

Drake: I’d say that Clooney’s track record as director is the exact opposite of what you suggest. He has only made one film, out of three, that wasn’t good. And even that is debatable. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was a pretty intriguing little film, and it was one of the better efforts in recent years (9 already!) by a first time director. And Good Night, and Good Luck was once of the best reviewed and most nominated films of 2005, due largely to Clooney’s directing. Leatherheads in the only real misfire, but if you like screwball comedies in the Hawks’ vein, it’s pretty solid.
To your point about being more excited about more proven and talented directors, I think Clooney can more than hold his own with the likes of Spielberg, Fincher, Payne and Cronenberg (among others). I think you’re right in suggesting it’s important to wait for the end product, but the same could be said for the others as well.

It seems like this film is getting the single most amount of buzz for oscar this year. I’m skeptical. This is Clooney’s 4th effort as a director and so far he is 1 for 3 making “archivable” films and the one that was archivable was a fringe “recommend”, good night and good luck. I know this film has a ridiculously good cast (i love gosling, psh, clooney, giamatti) but I don’t see it.
I think it CAN be good, and i really hope it is, i just wouldn’t bet on it given Clooney’s track record as a director. I know the academy has his historically liked actors turned directors- i’m just saying. I’m more excited for other, more proven and talented directors.

That headline makes me think they’re going to make out. They should.
^
another variation I’ve seen online this morning is
Ryan Gosling eyeballs George Clooney in Ides of March
so
Ryan Gosling balls George Clooney in Ides of March
would be the next logical step in the progression.

This could by Ryan Gosling’s year, he was great in Crazy, Stupid Love and I think he’ll be even better in Ides of March and Drive.
Nice font work.
AMPAS slaps forehead. “Why didn’t WE think of that?!”
