[Update: 7 scores of 100. 89 overall average.]
For those of you keeping score at home (you know who you are) Moneyball has so far collected 4 perfect scores of 100 on Metacritic, and only one naysayer (Slate) giving it anything less than a 70.
That’s 20 green lights and dim one yellow note of caution. With a current average of 86, this puts Moneyball one point below Deathly Hallows (at 87) as the best reviewed American film of the year thus far. Tree of Life and Meek’s Cutoff tying for 3rd with 85.
Still a little over a dozen critics yet to weigh in before the number settles at its final level, but Scott Rudin and Bennett Miller must be feeling pretty good right about now.
Impressive! I think the high critical scores combined with an uplifting story almost assure a spot in BP. Let’s hope for decent BO numbers. It’s one that I can’t wait to see.

a storyline about overcoming insurmountable odds seems to be the kicker when it comes to picking oscar favorites

totally agree with Ryan on metacritic… definitely the best and most nuanced way to get an accurate reading. It is the best method for formulating a consensus opinion of a film.

“The reviews for Harry Potter are great. But the movie is still confusing.”
This has been the biggest problem for the series: if you haven’t cracked open the books, you’ll be hopelessly lost.
Back on point: I guess I shouldn’t be surprised for the reviews on “Moneyball”: the storyline of a team or a person trying to overcome near insurmountable odds to make to to the top will win over the audience and the critics almost every time. I don’t mean to sound cynical, but we have see this a million times, and that’s why I had my doubts about the film’s legitimacy.

What I don’t like about Metacritic is how subjective the assigned score and weighting is
Scott, easy to see what you’re saying.
I think can deal with the occasional subjective wiggle room in order to get a more precise idea of level of enthusiasm.
with RT the most lukewarm positive review has the same weight as a rave. The most scathing pan is equal to a mild disappointment.
metacritic system isn’t perfect but it’s a little more nuanced than Thumbs Up vs Thumbs Down.

But as has been noted many times the BFCA is the most accurate qualifier for Best Picture nominees. Gotta get over 80 to even be in contention…and the last few years it’s been over 85 even.

More importantly it’s got 91 from the BFCA tying it with Drive for 2nd best of the year, both of course being behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 which garnered a 93.

If you’re going to go by the BFCA you might as well go to Rotten Tomatoes; both are like a public opinion poll. Metacritic is still the best option for critical acclaim. And right now, Moneyball is at an 89. HP 87. Not that it matters. The reviews for Harry Potter are great. But the movie is still confusing.

I loved “meek’s cutff”. but i’ll admit it is so unconcerned with narrative (more interested in style and beauty of the mise-en-scene) i’m not surprised by the low user ratings on sites like metacritic, rottentomatoes, and imdb. Reichardt (director of meek’s) is not a director interested much in pleasing a mass audience.

Good. I’ve been looking for a strong sports themed movie that doesn’t star Adam Sandler. Hopefully this will will do well with the male 40-65 crowd.

I’m very excited about ‘Moneyball,’ but am I the only one who thought ‘Meek’s Cutoff’ was pretty overrated?

Very impressive! very close to miller’s “88” with “capote” 6 years ago.
