Little by little we’re getting more of Williams done up like Monroe. It’s impossible to capture what Marilyn had. There was never anyone like her and there never will be anyone like her. She had so many things going on at once. She didn’t need the plastic surgery she got to make her face even more perfect. She wore false eyelashes and dyed her hair white. But none of those things made her beautiful. It was something inside…and it’s never been matched. Once you accept that basic fact you can move on and enjoy interpretations of Monroe. Here are a couple of great new pics of Michelle Williams:
Thanks to Monica for sending.
Why is everyone focusing on whether or not Michelle looks EXACTLY like Marilyn or not? What does that have to do with performance? Nothing, that’s what. Wait to see the film and stop pre-judging her based on photos. She’s one of the most talented actresses working and I have faith that she’ll be amazing in the role. Can’t wait to see it!

True, I should know better. I have Fanny & Alexander on blu-ray and from that movie we have the one and only Finn ever to win an Oscar.
Nominee, I meant. A film by Ettore Scola.

Stephen for once I agree with you…it really is about the story behind the role. Let’s be honest, very rarely does an actor win based solely on the performance. What both Marilyn had and Michelle has is an apparent vulnerability to them that makes people want to protect them. If Michelle can convey that on screen she can be a frontrunner.
Also, for those of you bitching about how Michelle doesn’t look exactly like Marilyn get over it. Most actors portraying iconic figures barely resemble each other. It’s about getting the essence of the person on screen.

Michelle is a great dedicated actress and she’s got 2 nominations, great respect and a tragic back story(Heath). Heath didn’t get an Oscar til he died. AMPAS is nothing if not guilt-ridden. And of course, Marilyn never got an Oscar or was ever taken seriously and was never nominated. It was only after her tragic death that she was given the gravitas she never had in life.
This all adds up to a VERY STRONG OSCAR BACK STORY in itself. And Michelle is an intelligent, and VERY SEXY actress when she turns it on.
As she certainly seems to be doing in these shots.

The problem with Michelle Williams playing Marilyn is that she’s too skinny. Marilyn Monroe was a voluptuous babe.

I have seen the film at preview screenings, and I have to say that Michelle does a pretty good job but the film itself is NOT GOOD. It’s a fun trifle, but not the Oscar player that everyone thinks it is. When Michelle does finally get a chance to delve a little deeper into Norma Jean, it feels unearned by the film and comes very abruptly. Then before you know it the film is over. It could possibly get her a nomination, but I don’t see it happening sadly.

I have great hopes for this movie and for Williams performance. Finally we can see her doing something totally new and different from her latest superb dramatic turns. She has to be sexy, funny, light, sad and vulnerable at the same time. It’s a very hard challange. I’m really excited to see what she has done.

We have to remember that there have been lots of times that some movies are subpar but certain performances contained therein have transcended the material. This might just be another example of that. Michelle could still have critics eating out of her hand even if the movie itself kind of sucks. But alas movie stills are just movie stills.

“She didn’t need the plastic surgery she got to make her face even more perfect.”
Oh, well… had she lived longer…? Hollywood is Hollywood.
Michelle is great in just about everything she does. At least recently. She was great in Mammoth, a movie that people rarely mention on this site.

Well one of my favorite things about Marilyn Monroe is that she was a very funny, and no one seems to every capture that about her. i am looking forward to see Michelle Williams play her I hope I am pleasantly surprised!

I totally agree with all who say that Michelle Williams will win! After i heard she will play Marilyn Monroe i knew that she will win for sure the Oscar! Michelle Williams is definitely one of the best actresses working today! Her stunning performances in the past include Brokeback Mountain, Wendy & Lucy, Land of Plenty, Shutter Island and Blue Valentine and after 2 nominations and 2 losses for 2 phenomenal performances she will be nominated and she will win in 2012 for Leading Actress for My Week with Marilyn! To all who say Meryl Streep will win her 3rd Academy Award or Viola Davis for The Help or Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs will win her first oscar i can only say: WAKES UP! Michelle Williams will win! For SURE!!

Oops, I meant to say that Robert Downey Jr played Charles Chaplin and that Chaplin played Adolf Hitler-ish — but I think you get my point.

Here’s a list of actors who played characters whose iconic status was familiar to audiences of the time:
Cate Blanchett / Kate Hepburn
Anthony Hopkins, Frank Langella / Richard Nixon
Bette Midler / Janis Joplin-ish
Angela Bassett / Tina Turner
Barbra Streisand / Fanny Bryce
Marion Cotillard / Edith Piaf
Sissy Spacek / Loretta Lynn
Jessica Lange / Patsy Cline, Frances Farmer
David Straithairn / Edward R. Murrow
Joaquin Phoenix / Johnny Cash
Robert Downey Jr. / Charles Chaplin, Adolph Hitler-ish
Will Smith / Muhammed Ali
Gary Busey / Buddy Holly
James Whitmore / Harry Truman
Dustin Hoffman / Lenny Bruce
Larry Parks / Al Jolson
Jamie Foxx / Ray Charles
Morgan Freeman / Nelson Mandela
Meryl Streep / Julia Child
Greer Garson / Eleanor Roosevelt
Ben Kingsley / Mahatma Gandhi
Raymonde Massey / Abraham Lincoln
Alexander Knox / Woodrow Wilson
Judi Dench / Queen Victoria
Helen Mirren / Queen Elizabeth II
Diana Ross / Billie Holiday
Reese Witherspoon / June Carter Cash
Susan Hayward / Lillian Roth, Jane Froman
James Cagney / George M. Cohan
Leonardo DiCaprio/Howard Hughes
All of these performances were Oscar-nominated. Although not all of these characters were as iconic as Marilyn Monroe, I bet Michelle Williams has the ability to pull it off whether or not she matches Marilyn molecule for molecule.

@Antoinette. I’m looking forward to her performance, not how much she looks like Marilyn. I wanna see if she can move like her, gaze like her, radiate like her, capture her essence. None of these things have to with appearance. They are not physical qualities.

Let’s pretend her face looked like Marilyn. Her body doesn’t which could totally be fixed in that first pic. I know exactly how that sparkly dress fit on Marilyn’s body and so do most movie fans. They could have built Marilyn’s shape into the dress.
I don’t know why actors even try to play icons. For the vast majority of people the performance won’t matter, it just will be does the person look like her/him or not. There was a TV movie about Marilyn starring Poppy Montgomery and she was much closer than Michelle Williams. I don’t see the need for these things. It’s like the Beatles movies that come out every so often starring a bunch of bad wigs with actors, who look nothing like the Beatles, walking around under them. Why? WHY?

Best make-up contender and a serious one.

Mark, her curves are underwater, the same place the real Marilyn’s curves would be in that picture.

I don’t know about you, but I think Williams is hella sexy. I bet her performance will be as good as she looks.

These pictures are great! I wish that they would just release a trailer for this already, as I have Williams as my prediction for the Best Actress winner.
