Drake, If you take the trouble to acquire the BBC’s 1979 Alec Guinness version of TTSS you will not be disappointed. For me it remains a pinnacle of the modern TV art. The casting is perfect and the acting is immaculate – not least Sir Alec himself. Smiley may come across as a slightly bewildered civil servant but beneath the surface is a resolve of case-hardened steel; you just know that he will do whatever it takes to achieve the goal of unmasking the traitor. The shabby and unromantic offices of the intelligence service; the sacrifices – both physical and mental – that its operatives are forced to endure far from the light of public appreciation or sympathy; the constant, lurking menace of violence and death – all these things are portrayed with brilliant subtlety and understatement. Bourne and Bond it is not! And be prepared to watch the whole thing again as soon as you’ve finished the first time around. I guarantee that you’ll have missed a lot. I certainly did. Wonderful score by Geoffry Burgon, to boot. Unreservedly recommended.

Everything about this looks spectacular. The direction, acting, cinematography, editing, writing, score, etc.

I don’t think it’s possible for me to be any more excited about this one.

@ drake, I haven’t, but I read in The Observer this weekend that John Le Carre himself prefers this version to the Guinness version.
I’m getting a The Lives of Others vibe from what footage I’ve seen thus far. That is, obviously, a good thing. There are so many promising films coming out over the next few months which, after a dull year to this point, makes me excited!

has anyone seen the alec guiness version of TTSS? i’ve read some decent things but its quite a time investment so i was just seeing if anyone liked it or not
has anyone seen the alec guiness version of TTSS
Classic. Well worth the 5-hour running time. Will be fascinating to compare, because it seems such a tough challenge to condense the story so much.
