It's Official: Eddie Murphy to Host the 84th Academy Awards
Broken exclusively by Nikki Finke, it looks like the Brett Ratner/Eddie Murphy Oscars is a go — let’s promote our new movie Tower Heist! I had put my money on the whiter of the two, Ben Stiller (whom I still think is the better choice here) but I’m not entirely shocked that they went with Murphy instead. You can bet Stiller will be there anyway.
Well, the good: the “Kids are all white” Oscars decides to do something right and have a black person host once again. Who can criticize such a choice? Also, this will wipe clean the bad blood people suspected from the Dreamgirls debacle when Murphy lost to Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine. Remember the whole “Eddie Murphy is pissed” thing?
The bad: It’s a weird precedent to have people pushing their own movies involved in the Oscars. Kind of leaves a bitter taste in your mouth the way it does when ABC puts on all of their people as presenters.
The ugly: it doesn’t change the real demographics of how the Oscars go down — five white male director nominees, writers, actors, etc. But hey, hats off to them for this, I think. What the hell. How much worse could it get than last year’s horror show?
What do you all think?

Ugh.
Ugh.
It doesn’t matter who is hosting The Oscars if the telecast doesn’t get better writing. The hosts weren’t the only problem last year.

immediately when he was suggested it was clear that he will do host the show. and it’s fine.

Really, Oscar?? First, you have that hack Brett Ratner producing, now you have the guy who went from “Beverly Hills Cop”, “The Nutty Professor”, and “Shrek” to making crap like “Norbit” and “Pluto Nash” to host the Oscar ceremonies?????? Just be done with at, and hire Michael Bay to produce next year’s telecast, have Dane Cook host, and have really creepy/perv upskirt and booty shots of Angelina Jolie and Emma Stone walking to the stage to present the next award. That’s now three years in a row where it’s a guarantee that the show is going to suck

The trick to Oscar hosting may be the ability to both identify with the Academy audience and also satirize them. Billy Crystal, Johnny Carson, and Bob Hope were able to do this. Murphy has “a history” with the awards and I doubt he can pull this off. At this point, no host will draw huge ratings because of the show’s length and format.

It’s cute the way Deadline is trying to present this as there exclusive.

I’m actually excited about Eddie Murphy hosting. He’s a really funny guy who boasts natural charisma and has earned industry respect. What’s more, he’s proven that he can hold his own on the stage, which, as we saw last year, is something crucial to being a good Oscar host. Not that we didn’t know that already, but it was just a reminder of what we already knew. But I digress…
The writing might be something of a problem, though. I’m crossing my fingers that Murphy has a hand in the writing or just ignores the script and ad-libs most of his material.

It could have been worse. Will, you are absolutely right about the quality of the writing.
I am very worried about Bret Rattner as producer. How can a hack transcend his DNA?

Sasha was all excited acres days ago on twitter but seems more cautious now. What happened. Hey i still feel like Steve Martin should have a lifetime contract with Oscar but people whined about him last time but he is the only proven commodity and in spite of that the oscars still suck. We shouldn’t expect no miracle here but he will do fine. In fact I predict he will be the best host ever.

Sasha’s primary reason that this idea is “good” is because Eddie Murphy is black?
What criteria! Or should I say: what crtiteria?

That’s a good point Martin that i forgot about. Like he brings nothing to the table good or bad but he is black so that’s great. Lmao.

This sounds pretty good to me. Then again, almost anything would after last year’s disaster. At least, Eddie is an actual stand up comedian.

So it’s safe to assume there will be fat suits, annoying/screaming kids and talking animals involved. Right? I also hope he doesn’t use this show as a platform, like Chris Rock did, to complain that black people don’t care about the oscars. sigh…

If you can read “having a black host is a good thing”
and think “lmao, so black is all he’s got to offer” then you’re an idiot.

The thing is, Eddie could be a draw for both older and younger viewers. I’m sure he “suffers” a little for the roles he gets nowadays (yeah, money is good). If he plays his cards right that night, his career may get a little boost.

If color really matters… James Earl Jones, Oprah Winfrey, now Eddie Murphy. Then Viola Davis will win Best Actress.
When it was announced that Sidney Poitier gets an Honorary Oscar, bot leads went to black actors (Berry and Washington, ofc).
So, does it matter? Michael Jackson said “it don’t matter if you’re black or white”.
I’m only joking, when Whoopi Goldberg and Chris Rock hosted, the shows were still quite white.

I think Sasha just wants to stir the pot for no reason. I don’t get why she would say Ratner picked Murphy and together they’ll promote Tower Heist when that film opens in the beginning of November? By the time the Oscars come around that film won’t even be in theaters, lol.
It seems natural to me that Ratner saw in Murphy, by working with him on that film, potential to do great things as Oscar host. But noooo, people have to analyze and criticize everything to the core.

In the race to irrelevance between the 2012 Oscars and this weekend’s MDA “Telethon”, the former takes the lead at the top of the stretch and is now thundering home. Let’s review, shall we?
1. 2011 has been a God-awful year for movies. Oscar’s nominees will be littered with little more than hardcore arthouse films, and an infestation of Harvey Weinstein productions.
2. To prove #1 is true, we could actually see a SILENT FVCKING MOVIE being nominated for Best Picture. A silent movie, people. Automatic DQ from the category.
3. Then, to promote Tower Heist (which was in deep shit from epilepsy advocates including Greg Grunberg for the perception that seizures were being played for laughs in the trailer), they pick the dude who projectile-vomited Norbit onto an unsuspecting populace.
Yeah, this can’t miss. *sarcasm*

Do you guys realize that 72% of Americans are white and only 12% are black? If 3 of 20 acting nominees are black, that’s statistically a very healthy representation of black actors in Hollywood. Kris Tapley is predicting 2 for this year, which isn’t bad either. I know there’s been years recently in which no black actors have been nominated, but it’d be outlandish to expect a majority of black nominees any year in our lifetimes. This isn’t because white people are evil, it’s because they’re the overwhelming majority of Americans.
I like Eddie Murphy’s humor and I’m excited to see him host, and that’s not because he’s black. I think he’ll put on a good show.

Call me crazy but I think Oscars and the the nominations should be based on the merits and talents of those involved and nothing else.

Have you guys heard his stand up calling gay people faggots over and over again. people give him a free pass yet people like michael richards, mel gibson, charlie sheen, careers are destroyed for their hate speech.

This year Oscars will surely attracts more black people to stay tune on telecast night making more viewers. Is Murphy’s new job secure a nom or win for Davis? me thinks so..
I got high hopes for Eddie to be better than last year couple.

Theatrical window between premiere and home entertainment release is 4 months. So the Tower Heist DVD hits store shelves the day after the Oscars.
Lucky coincidence!

It’s a bit odd that after the beating this year’s ceremony took, the Academy wouldn’t go for some safer bets. Get a popular, sophisticated comic who will, if nothing else–not eff it up. Eddie Murphy was a great comic once. Anymore, he’s the poster-child for lowbrow comedy. However, intellect flew out the window when Brett Ratner was hired.
On paper, Murphy has the goods: he’s a comic, he can sing and dance, he has plenty of experience with massive live audiences, he’s a former nominee. Unfortunately, I don’t think he’s all that popular within the community. He’ll have an uphill battle to get the audience on his side.
Still, he can’t be worse than Francaway.

Enough with the black-white thing. Eddie Murphy is funny and will make a good host because of that. I hardly doubt the ethnicity of an Oscar host is going to have an affect on any race relation problems that exist in the world today.
Unfortunately, he’s only going to be appreciated by older viewers, because the younger ones will only know him as the guy from Daddy Day Care.

Consider the possibility that 5 other safer more sophisticated comics turned the gig down before Ratner remembered Eddie owed him a solid.

I think Eddie Murphy will be a great host. Not that it’s remotely the same thing but he hosted the first MTV awards so it’s not like he doesn’t have some experience. He’s incredibly talented and smart and I think he will be the show. I’m calling it. Best Oscar Host Ever.
(For the record my favorite Oscar host to this point was Steve Martin. I’m fairly certain I’ve seen the last 20 telecasts in their entirety.)

Screw this.

A neutral opinion. If the Oscars don’t get better writers, doesn’t matter whose hosting. Fire Bruce Villach….whatever his name is…..fire anybody who’s been writing for the telecast for the past 20 years. Poor Billy Crystal.

I’m thrilled. Although this is an unexpected choice, when Eddie’s on, he’s on! I see no reason not to give him a chance. We all know he can be funny, we’ll just have to wait and see if he will be funny. It’s been a while…

Charlie brings up an important point – will he sing or dance? Anyone? I’ll guess barely on both.
My first reaction was Not Bad. Better than jackman or frannaway.
My second reaction was as much as I loved Eddie in the 80s – back when everyone got a pass on homophobic stand-up, by the way – this isn’t what the oscars need to come out of their slump. Let’s face it, the movies themselves may be fine (I won’t get into that debate here) but the oscars are flailing, far more than when Sasha began the site. 10 bp nominees! Oh uh never mind! Stars giving a one-minute kiss-ass to all 20 acting nominees! Oh uh never mind! Let’s pull hosts and producers out of a hat!
Other people have made the same point here – though not on this thread – about general decline in the Internet era when there are so many other awards shows and other – well – content that’s at least as interesting. I like to think we’ll look back on this as a rough patch, like the early-mid 1960s. Eddie Murphy has been uncool for so long that he’s actually cool again, but he and Brett aren’t bringing any kind of singular class and grace back to the show.

One word came to mind when i heard this news. Ugh. Is this going to be the same pompous Murphy who stormed out of the ceremony a few years ago when he lost the oscar to Alan Arkin? Are the Academy really that desperate?

Too bad he won’t go “delirious” at the Oscars. That Eddie is long gone. I guess right now only Gervais has the balls to stir some sh*t up while hosting, but I don’t see being offered to host. Billy Crystal may be a class act, but let’s face it, he is no Bob Hope and he is a little worn out. IMHO Steve Martin should be hosting, but after the co-host disaster with Alec Baldwin I also don’t see him getting the job anytime soon. Other choices – Dave Chappelle would have been interesting. Robin William would rock the house but he still does that every year, too bad only for 2 minutes. Dennis Leary also could do a great job. But still my top potential Oscar host is sadly dead. The late George Carlin would kick the shit out of that show. Just imagine how Carlin would knock down a fresh winner right off his high horse with a sarcastic comment how insignificant the award actually is. Now that’s good TV

I think this is a great choice. And he’s a comedian, people. I know that writing is at fault, a lot. But come on … how can this not be some sort of improvement over the last few years?

That exact thing happened not too long ago when Jon Stewart said (right after they won) “For those of you who are keeping score at home, I just want to make something very clear: Martin Scorsese, zero Oscars. Three 6 Mafia, one.”
That was epic.

What makes it even better was the next year Marty won! Along with Kathryn Bigelow’s win, Marty finally receiving an Oscar has to be one of my top 5 favorite Oscar moments.
As for the host, if Oscar really wanted to be inclusive they could hire Wanda Sykes. She is a woman, black, and gay. Now that is diversity!

unlikelyhood,
The Academy keeps a tight grip on clips from past ceremonies, and this doesn’t sound like a soundbite they’d be proud to share. Found this description of what went down that night:
[Excerpted from the book Patterns of Bias in Motion Picture Content by John Cones.]
But you know, that was nearly 25 years ago. Long time to hold a grudge — and there’s clearly no grudge in evidence this week/

Thanks for checking on that one Ryan. Interesting that he was presenting the Best Picture Oscar (have they been careful ever since not to give that job to a black person?) – to The Last Emperor, if it helps anyone’s search. I guess some would say Eddie was proven wrong about black inclusion over the last decade. I would rather say that little things like Eddie’s statement helped make that inclusion happen.
