Yesterday, Jeff Wells of Hollywood-Elsewhere.com and I met up with Tom O’Neil at the historic Sunset Tower hotel in Hollywood to talk about the new Gold Derby. Most people already know that Gold Derby has predictions from Oscar peeps, but you probably didn’t know that you can create a user account, friend other Derbyites and share your predictions? You can also bet your own predictions with a numbers thingy that I don’t really understand and will fail miserably at but that shouldn’t stop you, smart readers. If I were you, I’d head on over to Gold Derby as set up your own user account so your predictions can be recorded and counted. And if you do, friend me!
And if you’re curious how the new Gold Derby works, Tom has made a video that explains it. I’ve embedded it after the jump, along with some photos.
Meanwhile, if you’re curious about our podcast, it starts with Jeff, Phil and I tossing stuff around, box office, The Ides of March and then it heads on over to the Sunset Tower where we chit chat with Tom.
Have a listen!
I love this video because it reminds me of a 1950s instructional video, like “how to insert a tampax!” Just kidding, Tom. He knows I love him.
I really liked the episode, specially the second half that was recorded at the Sunset Tower hotel, very glamourous, great Oscar discussion.
Sasha, the last couple of episodes I’ve noticed how you’ve been getting defensive when Jeff would express his opinion on the possibility of a film being nominated at the Oscars. I think you should listen to what he has to say first and then tell him why you don’t think any film wouldn’t be recognized by the Academy instead of cutting him off in the middle of a sentence with a “No, no, the Academy won’t recognize it/him/her.” I don’t want to sound like “that” guy on the comment boards, just take it as a constructive criticism.
On a different note, can’t to wait for the upcoming episodes for more Oscar talk as we approach November and December.

Loyal: Feh. If Harvey Weinstein had died in a car wreck on Christmas Day 1998, Saving Private Ryan would have won (not saying it was my favorite film or anything – just saying) and what you call a brain fart wouldn’t have happened. Same diff.

About points raised in the podcast itself, I enjoyed the discussion of Ids of March. My feeling is that, even though we all know that politics is corrupt, we need to see it expressed in today’s terms. The Ides screenplay does that very well. Messages that apply to previous generations, I believe, should be updated so that people can relate better.

Loyal, take a closer look, it´s a woman (those legs, par exemple)!! 🙂

Dom, isn’t that a guy in the photo?
@ unlikelyhood
“Evidence #8,675,309 for the power of winning Best Picture, as opposed to just being nominated: when casting about for a great Spielberg film post-Schindler’s, none of you even suggested Saving Private Ryan.”
That’s really more of a brain fart. Sasha, Jeff, and Phil forget the names of things all the time. It’s part of the free-flowing, off the cuff Oscar Poker charm.

Gush, looks like over 50% of all younger women do have a tattoo atop of their buttom!

I signed up for a gold derby account a while ago. I don’t know exactly how it works but I had guessed on the Emmys and I have some points. lol I don’t know why. XD My Oscar predictions so far are just guesses and/or wishful thinking. I’ll figure it out eventually. The funny thing is the generic photo with the blue shirt, brown hair, and no face is EXACTLY what I look like. 😀

Ah. Didn’t know that

The new Gold Derby is pretty snazzy. I’ve updated my predictions in the big 6 categories and I bet 500 points on my BP predictions being correct! 😛

Fun podcast. Funny to sneeringly compare Ides of March to The Candidate, which *won* a screenplay Oscar. I bet Ides would be happy to match that record.

On our lovely site here, why isn’t Meryl Streep on the red-right column for Best Actress? Are we now counting her out for even a nomination? Has this been covered elsewhere? Wow, how things have changed for Meryl. Damn.
Unlikelihood, I don’t put up contenders on the right until they’ve been seen either by me or by a trust worthy source.
