OK, why did this group announce their winners so soon this year?? Doesn’t the season usually start with NBR’s picks?

Melancholia’s strong standing in the voting is interesting and unexpected. Maybe the critics’ way of saying a loud and clear “fuck you” to all of Von Trier’s animated detractors post-that thing you now…?
I wonder if there still is room for Dunst in that fifth spot for best actress at the Oscars? It seems like the race is still quite open with regards to that last spot. It could happen.

still pulling for a Fassbender, Swinton, Plummer, and Mulligan win for the Oscars. That would be so PERFECT.

It is Streep-Davis-Williams.
Have been that for weeks now, and now it’s even clearer when we see Close being shut out. Outside this trio, no-one else has a shot.
They all have something going for them, but maybe Streep has the slight edge. She has had that before, yet has still lost. So, we’ll just wait.

Viola Davis falling, Meryl Streep rising. I expect Streep will win her third Oscar now. And the audience will cheer with a standing ovation.

Every year there is more than five actresses who give good performances in movies in leading roles and every year someone will be left out and every year that someone’s fans will cry foul. It’s the nature of the game. Does Meryl Streep turn very showy performances, sure. But she does them well. I am one of the many who don’t find her acting to be false nor do I see the proverbial wheels turning (Is there any other actress who’s had that expression overused on her? I think not). People love to bitch about how Meryl Streep can’t give a quiet performance and yet The Devil Wears Prada was nothing but quiet and quite brilliant. Every character is different and she gives all of them their due.
This is an American actress, in her 60’s who can do whatever the hell she wants and does it magnificently. I’ll take that annnny time I can get it. I love my international stars but if it weren’t for Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, the Awards season would be a largely European affair. which is fine, but you don’t see our ladies running around winning Cesars and Goyas… though they do win Baftas so my point isn’t so totally ironclad.

Ryman,
You are right. They decided to skip the animation category this year. Did not feel there were enough worthy contenders to award the prize.

I’m just gonna assume that they either forgot about the animated category or just skipped it because they thought most of the animated films of this year were not up to par like the years before.

Joao- Your assertion that Perlman is “far superior” to Brooks in Drive is based on … WHAT? Did you see the film? Perlman has almost nothing to do while Brooks has meaty scenes throughout. Name one moment Perlman had that was even equal to Brooks’ restaurant scene at the end? There isn’t one.
Where does kind of indignation come from? People have different opinions, so what? All these threads where people have to scientifically prove that someone gave a good performance are getting ridiculous. Just because someone doesn’t agree with you, doesn’t mean your opinion isn’t valid. Cripes. Everyone is so damn defensive. Unless people are just trolling looking for fights, I don’t understand all the butthurt.

Film Fatale of course that I saw “Drive!! How can gave my opinion that I didn’t like Brooks perfomance whitout seeing it? A great Perlman moment? The one in which he says to Brooks he is tired of being treated as a child by the old class criminals, those who press his cheeks like he is still a boy, not a 50 year old man. Maybe didn’t sound as “meaty” as one of Brooks moments, but to me those moments mean nothing; Brooks is a good actor, but in “Drive”, IMO, is only flamboyant and shallow. And a like a lot perfomance that are discrete, and don’t have “meaty” moments, like some that even got the Oscar, or being nominated for, as Patricia Neal for “Hud” and Rosemary Harris for “Tom & Viv”

You have two notable performances a year and it works for you – they remember your name (you might even get nominated for both if one is Supporting and one is Lead). You have four-six equal (all Supporting) performances, they will vote for you all over the place. Chastain may get nominated for The Help, but I doubt it.
A year ago I didn’t even know who she was. Who is she? Exceptional year, SIX performances in 2011, and before that it was just TV or so. We’ve seen nothing similar in decades.

I have to admit to feeling a little underwhelmed by these wins! Perhaps its an underwhelming year for film ……. that said I was floored and blown away with We Need To Talk About Kevin and yet it appear that this film and actress are going to be on the outside looking in and thinking “what the fuck …….”! Awards seasons are getting stranger by the year!!!!

Gregoire — Gotta agree with you — While Chastain was great in all her movies this year, her performance in Take Shelter was her standout role. In fact, I think she was more impressive in it than Michael Shannon. I’m afraid the votes will split and she’ll not get any Oscar nomination, though.

“Drive” is masterful, but didin’t like Albert Brooks perfomance; it’s the only thing overrated there. Bryan Cranston and Ron Perlman are far superior on it, and even them don’t deserve to be named the best supporting actor of the year.

Jessica Chastain is so awesome that my favorite performance of hers from 2011 (The Debt) wasn’t even listed! I hope she gets swept all the way to the Oscars (hopefully for Take Shelter).

The Descendants = A movie you’d see on Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel
Shame: D.O.A. Fassbender snubbed here and at Indie Spirits. NC17 trumps all.

Before watching The Artist, to get my #1 movie of the year it has to BEAT this short film:
(we europeans have been kind enough to nominate it to our European “Oscar” for Short Film);

Joe W,
You are probably right, but Beginners struck a chord with me personally so it is a favorite.
But Tree of Life was a wonderous experience of a film and Moneyball was uplifting so either has my vote for the Oscar best picture. The Artist was OK but I did not like it as much as those two. The Descendants was very much to me like other films I have seen before and Clooney sort of walked through this being Clooney.

What’s so interesting about this is what they didn’t do. You can’t very well give Hazanavicus the Best Director award for a silent film and then not give that same film Best Picture. It would have been ludicrous had they done that. What’s more interesting is that if you believed in a silent film that much then it should stand to reason that the one thing in that film that should have stood out besides the Directing would have been the screenplay. Yet they awarded the Screenplay to Moneyball and acknowledged Brad Pitt. Tree of Life got cinematography, well that’s a no brainer; even I have to admit that. When you look at what they did then you have come away from this with a feeling that the Oscars are still wide open. Three films walked away with notice from the NYFC The Artist, Moneyball and to a degree Tree of Life. That certainly makes them all contenders but these are critics and not performers or directors or screen writers [well some of them might be]. It doesn’t change anything really. What it says is that the critics in NY couldn’t find a consensus. They didn’t love Tree of Life enough to give it BP. They didn’t love Moneyball enough to give it BP. They didn’t give The Artist anything but BD and BP. DuJardin and Bejo were a no show and that seems rather strange because in a silent film you really have to bank on the performance which convey your story. The only really unqestionable thing they did was award Best Actress to Streep. And even that could be that there were so many split votes that she garnered the most. If anything this just truly underscores how all over the place film has been this year.

I’m actually surprised. Apart from The Artist those awarded seem so normal. You know what I’m saying not hoity-toity. I hope this carries through to the Oscars for all the people who want Streep and Pitt to win.
Is this the ceremony that Monique skipped but Meryl attended that one year?

As someone who considers The Artist and The Tree of Life my favorite films of the year (so far, that is), I would have been pleased with either film placing for the year’s Best Picture. The Tree of Life struck me as such a “NY Film Critics Best Picture Winner,” alongside such past winners as A Clockwork Orange and Amarcord.

Zana,
Never say never but, I really don’t think Beginners has any real shot outside of Plummer. Don’t put too much (if any) stock in the Gotham awards

GREAT FUCKING NEWS!!!! The artists is officially a legitimate contender… it probably won’t win the oscar but people will now pay a lot of attention to this movie.

Agree with you re The Artist peaking too early just like “Social Network”. I now look for Moneyball or Tree of Life or Beginners @ Oscar time to walk away with honors. My favorite is Moneyball.
And way overdue for Brad Pitt to win Oscar, most versatile actor today. His time is now.
