  1. OK I admit. I’m kinda wanting to see this. It’s been 15 years, I think there’s been enough time between showings to appreciate it the second time. And Celine’s song isn’t as annoying too.

  3. Don’t get me wrong I am more than looking forward to seeing this in Theaters again! However, is it a coincidence that all these re-releases in 3D are movies from the 90′s? The Lion King, Star Wars Episode 1, Titanic and Beauty and the Beast. Could it maybe be because all the 90′s kids who are just graduating from college aren’t able to find jobs and are feeling nostalgic?
    Just interesting thoughts.

  5. James Cameron chose April 2012 for a reason, it will be the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the real R.M.S. Titanic.

  7. ‘The world’s most beloved and acclaimed movie.’

I must have missed that announcement. When was this decided?

I’m a fan of the film, but this is definately a stretch.

  13. I worked at 20th Century Fox when it was first released and I heard/watched portions of the film about 385749485686784848568668548 gazillion times. I don’t think I’ll go thru that again.

*Fox released the film around the world. Paramount had the North American market.

  17. From James Cameron, the director of Avatar.

That kind of marketing is clever, but to me it works the opposite way. Having said that, I think Titanic is a solid film – especially if you close your ears during some of its horrendous dialogue. The actors must have struggled through the words. Fox don’t care, Jim (and George Lucas, naturally) must have brought them the most money.

And I’m not sure how this really works, but correct me if I’m wrong. Fox Searchlight would only exist if 20th Century Fox was successful? In that case, good for them. Searchlight is pretty awesome.

  19. And don’t you think that Fox sharing the risk with Paramount was one of the worst business ideas ever? In hindsight.

They did the same with Braveheart, I believe. And you know how that went, too.

I’m probably all clueless, but… who cares?

  21. “The world’s most beloved and acclaimed movie”

Give me a break. From 1997 alone, there were more acclaimed films. LA Confidential, Good Will Hunting, The Apostle, Boogie Nights…

  23. I’d rather watch DiCaprio and Winslet in other things. Granted, Titanic is 3D is one of those things that could draw people back to the theatre.

  29. Odds that the re-release gets the $180m boxoffice that it needs to pass Avatar and reclaim its spot as top all-time domestic grosser?

For comparison, the 3D Lion King scored about $110m, and the original Titanic’s BO just about doubled the original LK. So, generically, it looks pretty close.

  31. I’m not even going to pretend that I’m not excited about this.

@Benjamin Morris I would love to see Titanic take back its throne, but I’m guessing it won’t. Teenage girls now aren’t DiCaprio crazed and Titanic 3D will almost definitely not get the multiple viewings it did the first time around.

  33. I know I’m in the minority but I do honestly think Titanic was clearly the best and most deserving of the nomintees back in 1997. Howeveer, to me, the best movie of 1997 was Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy. And 11 Oscars were too much reward, it didn’t deserve the Best Song or Best Score, for starters. Picture/Director/Film Editing/Sound Mixing/Sound Editing/Make Up/Costume/Visual Effects and Art Direction are enough.

L.A. Confidential is quite good but not a masterpiece by any means…

  35. JA:

Titanic was epic and deserved its awards IMO — a true masterpiece of big-budget film-making. Yes it was corny and the dialogue was crap, but it created a magic that Hollywood has been mostly unable to duplicate since.

That said, I don’t think I would put it on ANY list of my “favorite” movies.
