“HUGO is such a personal film by Martin Scorsese,” said Annie Schulhof, NBR President. “It is a tribute to the early years of cinema that uses today’s cutting edge technology to bring the audience into a completely unique and magical world. It is visually stunning and emotionally engaging.”
A select group of knowledgeable film enthusiasts and professionals, academics, young filmmakers and students, the National Board of Review viewed over 250 films this year including studio, independent, foreign-language, animated and documentary selections. These screenings were frequently followed by in-depth discussions with filmmakers, directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. Voting ballots were tabulated by the accounting firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP.
The National Board of Review honors diverse members of the film community at their annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy. Hosted by Natalie Morales, this year’s Gala will take place on January 10, 2012 at Cipriani’s 42nd St. in New York City.
“Hugo hasn’t even expanded to its widest distribution yet. It’s only open to 1200 screens. 1800 in its 2nd week.”
I stand corrected, but even then to call it a flop is still in the cards. If it doesn’t get good WOM, like triple it’s gross, then there’s no way it’ll regain its budget. It’ll have to rely heavily on overseas distribution, and I highly doubt it’ll happen.
I cried my eyes out.
Wow, I thought Hugo was a huge disappointment as I nearly fell asleep during the latter part of the movie.
I tried really hard to like this movie, I really did, but I just couldn’t get interested in the story.
Some people have reported crying their eyes out at the end of this film whereas I struggled to keep my eyes open.
I guess I should’ve read up more about the movie before plunking down 15 bucs to see it. I was expecting an adventure story filled with fantasy and child-like wonder (Peter-Pan or something like that).
My big problem is that this film was marketed as a “children’s movie” and in my eyes it was nothing of the sort. It’s clear Scorsese cared little about the “Hugo” storyline and more about George Melies (sp?). That was the kicker for me. I felt betrayed by the marketing campaign and quite stupid for not pushing myself to learn more about the story beforehand.
That being said, the fact that it is beloved by so many critics must mean that this is a very good film. To be completely honest, I feel dumb for not being able to see how great this film is. Oh well…

@ Tess:
Why do people keep saying this about HUGO when NO ONE brings it up besides its supporters? The article doesn’t even mention the movie’s total gross so it just goes to show that studio plants, or rapid fanboys, are trying to make excuses for it. Even IMDb a couple of posters are saying this “it’s a a flop yet” mentality. If this movie was made by a director who has less reputation then Scorsese then people wouldn’t be saying that. People would be saying “it’s a flop.” So stop saying that HUGO isn’t a flop because IT IS a flop in terms of domestic distribution.

Just watched ANOTHER EARTH. WOW! Beautiful film! Brit Marling is AMAZING! I’m now very sad this will be so overlooked this awards season. At least NBR named it one of the best independent films of the year.

Just saw Hugo last night and all I can say is wow! I am so happy it won best picture, and I’m happy for the directing prize, Drive, Ides of March, Win Win, The Help Ensemble, Harry Potter 7 part 2, and Michael Fassbenders special award.

One down, tons to go for HuGO! I got Hugo and Scorsese right plus some others like ensemble for The Help, and then also got one NGNG right — the entire Harry Potter series wins a special achievement award.
Post Crash-Brokeback, it’s been one juggernaut year after another. The Departed, No Country for Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Hurt Locker all barreled their way to Best Picture Oscar. And of course last year The Social Network seemed to fit the bill too until it ran smack into the PGA, DGA and SAG! This year the juggernaut is huge… as in HUGO!
It’s another juggernaut year and it’s Hugo this time!

Butterfield gave the best performance.

Love these results! Although I wish Albert Brooks could’ve won for Drive. He was 10 times better than Christopher Plummer. Plummer should’ve won 12 years ago instead for The Insider. That was his best role.

The 2 mentions for Potter are great…but who thinks it should have won Ensemble as well?

Uh, Dave, CHASTAIN is far from overhyped – and you’re the only one who feels that way. Far more than Woodley, who gave one performance and played a teenager quite well, Chastain is a chameleonic actress who appears to be the heir apparent to Streep.
Tree of Life
The Help
The Debt
Take Shelter
Texas Killing Fields
Coriolanus
There isn’t a shred of commonality between those performances. In fact, they are diametrically opposed — all 6 of them. You cannot recognize Chastain’s look, voice, gait or presence between any of them. From her Israeli agent to her Southern Belle to her heartland wife to her Shakesperean work with Redgrave and Butler — the woman is as accomplished as it gets. There hasn’t been an actress in movies this thrilling since Cate Blanchett, and an American actress since Streep. Period. Chastain more than deserved the same as Fassbender got from the NBR. The pair are simply phenomenal and between them, they are turning in the most compelling acting in movies right now.

Some thoughts:
Midnight in Paris: A surprising snub. NBR likes this sort of films (hello, The Artist and Hugo) so its snub is quite shocking. Maybe we were overestimating the film and it’s only heading for the typical Best Original Screenplay nomination? I still think it’s in the Best Picture race, but the critics supposedly supported the film a lot. Its exclusion from the runner-ups for Picture and Director at the NYFCC and, here, at the NBR awards is weird.
Moneyball: I still think that the film will only be nominated for Actor and Screenplay. I don’t think that many Academy members will vote for this (#01 votes). Yes, there will be some, but not many. The film is respected, but I’m not convinced.
The Help: Same should be said for this film. Let’s be honest, it’s an average film that happens to have a great ensemble cast. It’s not a coincidence that the film won Best Ensemble but didn’t even get a Picture nomination. This might be a case where a film scores only acting nominations, but the Academy members don’t think much of it as a film. I still predict Davis and Spencer for acting nods. I think it definitely has a BP shot, though. We’ll see.
Martha Marcy May Marlene’s performance is so disappointing. Too many snubs these days. Olsen is my #09 right now. I still think she has a better shot than Jones. But Davis, Streep, Williams, Swinton, Close, Theron, Dunst and Mara are ahead of her. I think that Close and Theron won’t make it and it will be Swinton and a newcomer (Mara or Dunst-who gets some love from critics) to fill the #04 and #05 spots.
The winners!
Hugo: It’s turning out to be a massive success, critically. #02 at NYFCC for Picture and Directing and winner at the NBR awards? That’s good. If Potter was released in November as well, I guess that it would have been a massive fight, because of how well-received both films are. Now, Hugo has the upper hand. I think it’s a surefire Best Picture nominee. Right after The Artist and The Descendants right now.
Harry Potter: Double reward. The special award and its inclusion in the top 10 reignites the discussion concerning its BP chances. Heavy WB marketing, massive critical and box office success…it’s looking good. It seems that the industry (and critics) will want to reward the film (and the series as well). I guess that Potter will easily make it at the BAFTAs and BFCA awards. If it manages to get a PGA nomination (which is highly possible), a SAG ensemble nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture-Drama (is Hugo going Comedy/Musical, by the way? If so, then I guess that Potter will make it in Drama), then it will be another surefire Best Picture nominee. Its chances increase every week.
Finally, Shailene Woodley seems to solidify her nod for Best Supporting Actress. Now, we know that Drive won’t be nominated for Best Picture and NBR love Eastwood and Clooney, so you can also exclude The Ides of March and J.Edgar. This leaves us with 7 possible BP nominees: The Artist, The Descendants, Hugo, War Horse, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, The Tree of Life and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Midnight in Paris, The Help and Moneyball fill the other three spots (I don’t include Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close because it hasn’t been seen yet and I have a bad feeling about it) and we have our top 10 BP contenders. Now, how many of them will eventually make it in the final lineup is another subject, which will take form in the coming months.

Yay! Thrilled for Hugo, Marty, Tilda and even Clooney. Especially happy to see Drive noticed again, since it will more than likely not be invited for oscar, save Brooks.
Glad that so far it looks like no one film or even on performance in any category looks to be scorching the earth through the critics awards. I’m sure patterns will emerge, but so far, so fun!
By the way, I love Hugo, liked The Descendants and am sure I’ll like the Artist. Just glad to see variety.

To clarify: Brooks is a cool guy and ok in Drive, but the least convincing aspect of an otherwise terrific movie.

“Hugo has the subtlety of a lead pipe.”, “people need to calm down about Elizabeth Olsen. She is just getting going and needs to do a lot more good work to erase the damage inflicted on American culture by the twins.”
Ha, JJ!
By the way: Tilda, Plummer, Woodley, Clooney…very encouraging! (worst case scenario could have been: Streep, Brooks, Spencer, DiCaprio)

The only one of those nominations that really thrill me is the one for Tilda Swinton. She needs as much momentum as possible to crack into the Oscar top 5. I hope enough people ‘get’ the performance.

Wow, they got it completely right!
Best Picture for Hugo, absolutely the best film of the year, and Best Director for the incredible Martin Scorsese.
This is the best news I’ve heard in a while.

Harry Potter 7.2 and Midnight in Paris are both better examples of the magic of movie making than Hugo. Hugo has the subtlety of a lead pipe.

I actually thought J Edgar was very strong. I can understand people wishing it would be more probing, but you can’t judge a movie based on what you want it to be. I almost always like the NBR list and seeing both Drive and The Tree of Life on the short list makes me very happy.

Very happy with their choices.
I’m glad that they differed from NYFCC – makes it an even tighter and more suspenseful race.
I’ll be curious to see what the LAFC choose (and Golden Globes).
What? No mention of Vanessa Redgrave in Coriolanus? That’s kind of a shocker to me.

interesting that Christopher Plummer would get recognition for supporting actor. i don’t think he’s won yet but good for him. he deserves it for his body of work going back all the way to the 50’s and then the sound of music and the 80’s and 90’s when he played mike wallace in the insider and all his mini-series stuff.

Weird, because that’s how I feel like the NYFCC awards were this year…they wanted to go first, and then preceded to pick the Oscar frontrunner as their best picture (The Artist and its director), Oscar’s favorite leading lady (Streep), Jessica Chastain (and naming pretty much all of her performances, hoping they can name her Oscar vehicle)
I thought NBR took some way out-of-left-field picks this year, especially with Hugo. Many were still questioning whether it could break free of the “kids” genre it’s been tagged with and yet they named it best picture (and best director). Plus Shailene Woodley AND Tilda Swinton??? And they had the great taste to give 50/50 a best original screenplay nod. And they included Drive and The Tree of Life in the top 10 Best film lineup! NBR did overwhelmingly great in my eyes.
However, *eyeroll* at the J. Edgar and The Ides of March inclusions. And *eye raise* at the Elizabeth Olsen/MMMM snubs.

Why is thee not a ‘Best Music’ from a film category? If there was, I would recommend the music from the musical saw scene in ‘Another Earth’. You can hear it on the composer’s website http://www.scottmunsonmusic.com/news/music-in-film-another-earth-soundtrack

I dont know… Everyone knows the NBR is the moron awards, like the golden globes their sole purpose is to highlight what they think will win big that season. So we get weird nods like the last samurai. They are just throwing stuff up to take credit for the ones that stick

Not that surprised about Jessica Chastain’s snubbing in supporting actress (there were other contenders), but REALLY strange they didn’t cite her in breakthrough actress or even give her a spotlight award like they did Fassbender.
****
Chastain is not in the same league as Fassbender. I think she’s so overhyped this year.

I think it’s becoming pretty apparent now that MMMM is indeed Bright Star 2.0. Margin Call is completely stealing it’s thunder and I’m not surprised at all, it has a stellar cast and a very timely topic. MMMM is suffering from its lack of big name stars, and odd subject matter in comparison.

Film Fatale, that is purely subjective
PaulH, Do you seriously just hate every film not directed by Christopher Nolan. You bitch about every fucking movie and I know you haven’t seen most of them. Also Hugo isn’t done at the box office yet.

Very happy and pleasantly surprised for Hugo, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Plummer.
ECSTATIC about Tilda!
Meh on Clooney and Woodley, although not surprised.
WTF!?!? on the continuous snubbing of Elizabeth Olsen and Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Hugo is going to gradually expand its theater count. I can see it being a sleeper hit, domestically.
It is was on a thousand less theaters than Arthur Christmas but it only made a million less in its opening weekend. It is not traditional family fare but it is getting tons of buzz. More children are liking it than expected. Then you forget about the international gross. It will meet its budget when it expands to all of its global markets. It is far from a flop. I can see it holding over well throughout Dec-Jan. Of course, it is too early to tell with the alleged post-Thanksgiving slump coming but I think Hugo and The Muppets will rise above it. The movie will draw big international numbers which will NOT make it a flop. It might not be a huge blockbuster but I expect it will meet its budget and the advertisting budget is not as big as you think. I can see Hugo doing really well in France and the UK.

Very happy about Tilda! And Hugo too! Can’t say the same about Felicity Jones!

My point is, it was too presumptuous for you to call it a bomb this early. HA!

Wow, I have very mixed feelings about this. I felt the NYFCC made MUCH better choices that will correlate more strongly with the Oscars. Moneyball, Tree of Life have major traction in the awards race and personally were among my favorites for the year.
What is it with the NBR and Clooney? Everytime, they tip too hard in favor of an overhyped and overrated Clooney movie, they lose that connection as a credible precursor to the Oscars. Though I predicted Clooney would win Best Actor and I am honestly surprised by their other picks. My gut is telling me that the NBR was a little off this year as far as the Oscars in some categories.
Cons and Upsets: Moneyball got burned in favor of Ides of March and other movies that got panned with lower critical ratings. Moneyball should have made the top ten. Just shocked that Pitt got snubbed completely. I really thought he would get a Best Supporting Actor nom or Tree of Life might get ensemble. Tree of Life got hit by a huge blow. Jessica Chastain didn’t get supporting actress or breakthrough, what the hell?!. She can act circles around Felicity Jones. I do NOT understand the hype with Felicity Jones. I am surprised Midnight in Paris didn’t make the cut, that movie lost its traction. No MMMM!? Elizabeth Olsen, gah. She should have received breakthrough. I think the similarities to Winter’s Bone, though superficial, screwed it over. I expected the Clooney win but I didn’t expect them to favor The Descendants so much. This will probably play out like it did with Up in the Air. They missed the ball on a number of choices. I wish they would have paid attention to Jane Eyre, Albert Nobbs, and Tyrannosaur. No Tinker either. Not a good sign for Oldman’s chances. The Help gets snubbed in the top ten, but it wins ensemble?! Doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t think this boosts The Help’s chances at all despite the ensemble win, it almost seems like a perfunctory nod with all of the PR & campaigning. I think I am one of the few that didn’t like Rango. I would have preferred The Adventures of TinTin or Winnie the Pooh. Heck, I would have even preferred Puss and Boots or Kung Fu Panda 2. I am also surprised that Melancholia got snubbed. No A Separation? What is with the Cedar Rapids picks?
Pros ( for me): Michael Fassbender getting the Spotlight award. He was amazing and solid in four note-worthy movies. Tilda receiving Best Actress though I would have preferred Elisabeth Olsen or
Mia or Glenn Close. I am kind of shocked they didn’t pick Meryl. This is bad for Michelle Williams.
I LOVED that Harry Potter made their list and it is getting a special award. I was worried it wouldn’t get in at all. I’m delighted that 50/50, Take Shelter, Margin Call, and even Shame made their Indie list. Great for Fincher and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!!! I haven’t seen it yet but I saw the original, read the book, and am a huge unabashed Fincher fangirl. DELIGHTED that The Artist didn’t make a huge impact, it only got picked in the top ten. I was afraid it would be sweep or be the frontrunner.
Good for Hugo! I loved this movie but I am surprised that the NBR picked it for Best Picture and Best Director. I think this will certify its position in the award race and it will receive an Oscar nom for Best Picture for the five extra slots. It is bound to get a bunch of nominations, especially technical ones. Despite the NBR love, I don’t get the vibe that it will win Best Picture and Scorsese might not necessarily get the nod. I just don’t see or feel it.

Bobby, Hugo’s gonna have to earn 2.5x (or so) its budget **just to break even**, with its enormous P&A (publicity and advertising). Maybe on big-budget movies these days the 2.5 multiplier is underestimated.

Didn’t they usually have 11 Top Films? Best Picture and THEN ten?
And people thinking that it is “telling” that Dragon Tattoo is included. Well, considering films that DIDN’T make it on there (Moneyball, Tinker, Help, Midnight in Paris, Shame Young Adult) on behalf of J. Edgar and Ides of March, this means nothing. And people saying anyone or any film is “tanking” – relax, we’re only getting started. 🙂

NBR is a bit of a milquetoast organization, for all that is one of the oldest. Year by year their selections are rather interesting footnotes but not really relevant in the long run. In a sweep year they can be another in the collection but in a reasonalby open year as this one seems to be I do not see them guiding the conversation. In terms of prestige I do think if you can’t have an Oscar on your mantle then you at least want an NYFCC certificate on your wall.

LOL @ Paul H
Hugo a bomb? Check your facts. It has the highest per screen average among new releases over Thanksgiving weekend– even higher than The Muppets! Hugo will get a wider release this month.

I hate the idea of Christopher Plummer and Max Von Sydow competing against each other for an acting award. They are both in a class by themselves.

And Gone in 60 Seconds, er, Drive, in the top 10? Nic Cage and Angelina say we laid the groundwork for ya, Ryan Gosling.

Hugo? Meh. $170m budget, $20m domestic boxoffice. Cowboys and Aliens-esque bomb. The Scorsese name carried the day here. Rooney Mara, NBR? And Sarah Palin’s a Rhodes Scholar. So much for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Jennifer Garner and Kristen Wiig RUTS Tilda Swinton every day of the week and twice on Sunday. As in Run Up The Score on her. Both Butter and Bridesmaids should get their lead actresses considered before Swinton. They still love them some Clint, don’t they? Better Ides of March than the Hallmark Movie Channel wannabe movie The Descendants.

Yay for Hugo! The best movie of the year, byfar.
Also: a round of hurras for Drive, Dragon Tattoo, and Harry Potter! Very surprised that Midnight in Paris and Moneyball were axed.

Hugo is excellent , The Artist is better. The Tree of Life and Drive are the 2 most overated films of the year. Win Win is the most underated film of the year.

Not to hate on Plummer as I think he is the best this year SO FAR, But Max Von Sydow stll is in the gates and once he pops his head out I have a feeling that he could end up winning. Don’t get me wrong I so want plummer to win but max is the same age as plummer so it is between them all the way.
