More scores have come in at BFCA in the past two weeks. They’re still missing two major players: Extremely Loud and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Apart from those, we now have a fairly comprehensive list of the films that may contend in picture, director, acting and writing. As voting is still in progress, some of these recent scores may change.

Any actual reviews of Extremely Loud anywhere?
I made new predictions and the total tally surprised me.
The Artist and War Horse – both with 11 nominations, Hugo would get 10, Extremely Loud 7, The Descendants 5, J. Edgar, Moneyball, Tintin, Harry Potter and The Help all would get 4. The rest (incl. Dragon Tattoo) get 3 or less.
Some updated scores, plus a few new ones:
Win Win – 90
50/50 – 86
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – 83
We Need to Talk About Kevin – 83
Shame – 80
The Iron Lady – 76
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close – 75
The Adventures of Tintin – 72
The Lady – 67
Harry Potter on top, Tyrannosaur on the bottom – these BFCA-guys are genius! 🙂
Not working, hmm.
takes a few minutes for the gravatar to … propagate… I believe is the proper fertilization term.
I try.
I see all comments doubled in this thread. But this site is now faster than ever. Great job, guys.
BTW, how do I add an avatar? I’d like to have a picture there.

I still can’t believe HP8 is rated so highly AND higher than other films. I’m truly baffled, and it seems that I am not alone.
Is it just my computer or some of the comment on top seem to be repeating?
CORRECTION: “an Oscar-driven film”
In what parallel universe was a film like “The Artist,” a black and white silent film with an unknown star and director ever conceived as “an Oscar film”???
Just goes to show how fantastic the finale was Jonathan :p
And in further news, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close just started out at BFCA with a perfect 100.
Yikes!
Things are heating up.
You know it’s a crazy Award season when a Harry Potter movie is BFCA’s highest rated film, yet Oscar-driven vehicles like Hugo, The Artist, The Descendants, and The Tree Of Life are 2-9 points behind it.
And in Metacritic news The Artist ties Potter and Moneyball…but HP is still the only one that can claim 100% positive reviews!
If MWWM was that damn good based on that score Michelle Williams should have had the NYC and NBR Best Actress awards in her pocket. That’s just pure bullshit.
War Horse has the same score as Shame and Melancholia. If it’s as good as those films, than it’s damned good! 🙂
Not to be too harsh, but if The Muppets outed The Artist, I’d be fixing up a batch of grape koolaid because the universe we love would be on the verge of implosion, affiliations and nostalgia be damned.

Thank you Beth for putting up the scores of the foreign films. I appreciate it. I am also very shocked about Uncle Boonmee, its such a brilliant film.
I do hope though that A SEPARATION gets not only a foreign language nomination but also a Original Screenplay nomination a la Habla con Ella or Y Tu mama tambien as of recent years. Here’s hoping!

Wouldn’t it be funny and sweet if The Muppets made the top ten? I would love to see that reaction from people. It got the great reviews, they have nostalgia, they have been to The Oscars before, and it has a connection due to it being partly owned by Disney now when that is also an affliate for ABC. It would be my ridiculous dream come true if The Muppets came along and outed a contender I wasn’t impressed with like The Artist or The Help but I doubt that will happen. It could get an Original Song or Art Direction nom. Though I doubt it, but I’m just throwing that out there.

for some added levity, it was not mentioned that The Muppets got an 85….

Ah, this site is still giving me trouble.
It seriously needs to move to 2012. I made many typos but I needed to correct that egregious one.
Watch Moneyball, Hugo, The Muppets in theaters! Defeat the slump! Don’t let Twidreck be number one again, it is disgraceful!

There seems to be a disparity with BFCA, Metacritic, and the tomatometer this year with wide ranges and some notable differences.
I strongly expect War Horse’s rating to go up unless the critics are being uber-harsh and hyper-critical like they were with J.Edgar and Tree of Life.
Tree of Life got a lower BFCA score but still seems like a strong contender in the race so I don’t think it will affect War Horse too much considering very different movies with lower epic scales like The Muppets,
The Descendants, and etc got high scores. What War Horse needs to campaign now, is the cast. Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, and Benedict Cumberbatch were the standouts. Emily’s role was small but it might be significant enough for a nom. I mean, smaller roles have won before like Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love. Emily has the body of work going and career overdue status going for her too. I heard there might be a campaign for her but the movie definitely needs acting campaigns. War Horse is still a strong contender and I defintely think it will at least be nominated but as far as which movie will win, it is up in the air.
I am a Fincher fan but my gut is telling me GWTDT is not going to make the cut but it might get technical noms. I don’t think ELIC will make the cut either. It is just what I am feeling now but that might change. In the Land of Blood and Honey seriously needs to move to 2010 before time runs out to change the schedule because its chances are just burned for this year. There are way too many contenders getting the buzz and the slots seem filled. Now that the critics keep absurdly moving up their nomination annoucements, squeezing in a release at the end of Dec is usually not a smart move unless there have been many advance screenings.

Most of what you mentioned are not even inaccuracies, but details and facts that were left out of Moneyball. They could not go into the entire backstory of the Oakland A’s. Moneyball didn’t deviate too much from the real story and they had to use a different name for Brandt because the real
guy didn’t want his name used. I think the movie addressed many dynamics off and on the field. It is far superior to any recent sports movies, had strong acting, emotional resonance, was intelligent, had a sharp script,
tied many complex concepts together, managed to make a movie about sports statistics compelling, and had Bennett Miller at the helm so it is not surprising at all that it is receiving critical acclaim. For an Oakland A’s fan, that seems like nit-picking to act like it didn’t deserve critical acclaim.
J. Edgar, A Beautiful Mind, The Queen, and even Titanic had far more biographical and factual inaccuracies than Moneyball. A Beautiful Mind compromised so many facts and covered up so many truths about John Nash it was absurd and it managed to win Best Picture. Hollywood cares about the quality of the movie and acting moreso than viewed as concrete vessels of info. Most take liberties with the facts unless it is supposed to be a documentary or strictly non-fiction biopic.
By the way, Moneyball has been re-released widely in theaters. Watch it again! I think Ides of March has been re-released too. Though I doubt it will have much of an impact due to the post-Thanksgiving slump. Hugo, however, has also expanded and also seems to be doing well. It should be #2 or #3.
I expect War Horse’s rating to gradually go up. Also, a Spielberg just like a Malick or Eastwood film, will be graded more harshly due to expectations. Most of the reviews I have read are good.

Small country’s dilemma.

Thank you, Beth. I see my country’s entry there. And I don’t know about the #1, but the next two were last year’s stuff for Oscars.
I hope you all cry for me when Le Havre fails to get a nomination. Finland fucking has only one! Jesus!!!

I left out the foreign film scores because none of them seems likely to figure in the BP/BD/Acting/Writing categories this year. But here you go. (I’m sickened by their response to Uncle Boonmee and Certified Copy, two of my faves.)
Tomboy – 100
Incendies – 87
Of Gods and Men – 84
Le Havre – 82
The Skin I Live In – 75
Poetry – 72
Certified Copy – 64
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives – 61
A Separation, Faust, The Turin Horse, Mysteries of Lisbon – no score yet

Ya know I’m not surprised by the lie ratings J Edgar is getting but Dicaprio made that movie watchable and I’m sort of upset that clooney and outt are getting these preliminaries and Leo….nothin. I loved his performance and thought it was amazing.

Elizabeth Olsen might get in at BFCA, since they have six slots. But the competition for Best Actress is fierce this year, so even she could miss. Wonder what they’ll do with Glenn and Charlize, with their lowly scores.

Can someone explain why no foreign films are listed on here? Do they not vote for those? Quite a shame since I think there are a good list of foreign films that are quite finer films than the ones listed.

Sorry, Scott and the other two people who love HP8 on this site. It is already December and it’s very hard for me to understand why it is still at 93. Most foreign masterpieces are below that. BP/BD -nominations are still not happening, or I will lose my all hopes on Oscar’s prestige.
I predicted 4 noms for HP8, looks like to be at least 6.

I’m sorry but that high score of MarthaMMM just invalidates the rest, lol. Give me a break. It’s good but…
I’ll be surprised if MMMM makes the BFCA’s own Critics’ Choice year end Top 10.

@Patrick C.
Yeah, Mark Zuckerberg had a girlfriend while he was designing Facebook, too! And EOD techs aren’t allowed to investigate bombings and defuse roadside on their own. These fatal inaccuracies will COMPLETELY destroy their movies chances of getting Oscar attention!

See, I find that very curious about War Horse. There are getting to be some suggestions that it’s not the Best Picture nominee lock we’ve been assuming it is.

War Horse is recent, so yeah, I’d expect it to change slightly. But it hasn’t been jumping around wildly so far, unlike Young Adult, which seems to be on a roller coaster between 60 and 75, or The Lady and We Need to Talk About Kevin, which started at 90 and you can see how much they’ve dropped.

Interesting that the number for War Horse is somewhat low, several points under that 85 threshold. I’m assuming not everyone has weighed in yet on War Horse, and that its number will rise in the coming days?

I am getting into the awards season very late but I am very surprised by how much acclaim that Moneyball seems to be getting. The inaccuracies that were presented throughout the film would have had other movies taking hits for possible nominations. I grew up a huge baseball fan and mainly an Oakland A’s fan. The team in question for that film was not good because of two part time players and an old outfielder. It was because of 3 stud starting pitchers that got NO mention in the film. In fact, one of the pitchers, Barry Zito, went on to win a Cy Young Award. They also had the MVP award winner in Miguel Tejada. The story of the relationship between Beane and Howe was great but I believe you have to look at the game on the field as off. Now if the Best Actor category is weak this year, I could see a possible nomination for Pitt. But I can’t believe that it could be up for a Best Picture nomination.
