Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

Meryl looks natural and I prefer that to most female “stars” of today.
They just don’t have the special aura she has and most of them never will.
She has aged very gracefully and wise and still seems very down to earth, even after all these awards she’s collected. A pure class act.
No I am not joking.
She’s a beautiful woman. But in this clip she looks like a soccer mom off to chaperone the high school dance. She does not look like movie star. Obviously her career hasn’t been about sex appeal but there’s nothing wrong with bumping it up a notch for special occasions—especially ones filmed for television. But to each his own.
I wish she’d had her hair done and not worn glasses. She can be really stunning. It’s sort of like Alec Baldwin being honored and not shaving or wearing a tie.

Bennett, please tell me that’s satire or some other sort of off-key joke. You don’t think Merly Streep looks stunning enough in this clip? She sure looks stunning to me.
It’s sort of like Alec Baldwin being honored and not shaving or wearing a tie.
No, what’s it’s like is saying Alec Baldwin would look better in lipstick, a strapless gown and his hair done up in a bouffant.
Meryl Streep is certainly deserving of this honor. I’ve had a crush on her since The Deer Hunter.
There’s just as much nonsense on television in Europe as there is in the United States. Problem on both sides of the pond.
Cool video. Great honorees.
Also it was great seeing John Kerry hanging out there. I always liked him.
I have to agree with Tero. After growing watching the straight-to-the facts poker-faced BBC journalists, I was enormously shocked at how much American anchors insert their opinions between news stories. I was watching CNN during the world cup and this journalist kept babbling about how much she hated vuvuzelas, right after a news report on vuvuzelas. I kept asking myself, “who cares what you think? deliver the news and stop yapping about you likes and dislikes.”
These journalists are always cracking jokes, laughing, sharing stories about their families etc etc because everything has been reduced to entertainment value. Thus, I agree with Tero. Americans will find European channels incredibly boring.
Had a crush on her too– especially in her younger days. I love her in The French Lieutenant’s Woman! 🙂
“Oh, you Europeans feel so superior, do you?”
Goes both ways.
American reporters are mostly tools (even the most respected ones lack so much knowledge). It’s all for entertainment value rather than informative – as if the viewers were ten-year-olds. Look at the Oscar red carpet. It was not any fun after Ebert left.
Ask any star, and they will tell you that they would rather be interviewed by a 70yo senile European guy than a 25yo American who’s only there for her looks (for TV).
Having said that, European news channels would be very boring for most Americans.

facts facts facts
who has time for all those fricken facts?
By the way this reporter is a tool. Don’t tell Meryl she’s the most important person in a room that includes two presidents. In another interview she’s asks Glenn Close if it’s her first time giving tribute at The Kennedy Honors. To which Glenn replies “no actually is my seventh”. I mean why?
Yeah for Meryl and for the Kennedy Center Honors! She seemed soo incredibly happy, and rightly so!
The recent youtube video of Meryl toasting Vanessa Redgrave is Gold. For those who believes pre-Oscar speaches mean something, this is really something. If only this had been broadcasted, because going into the Oscars and with Coriolanus in mind, Vanessa is given the most validated praise an actress could only wish for. Plus we’re yet again reminded of Meryl’s gift of speach, and which some of us so long for to unfold at the academy’s podium.
Keep them Kennedy Honors videos coming. Meryl loves Oscar, but Oscar doesn’t love her back that much. Still, this time she will have to win. If she doesn’t with a baity role like Thatcher, she ain’t gonna win at all. It’s hers to lose.
Nikki says: “In my opinion, no film reviewer should ever agree to embargoes because doing what the studios want is a slippery slope. It’s just a short hop to becoming part of Hollywood’s publicity machine.”
I must say I agree with this 100%. I have once agreed to one studio’s demands of not only when, but also WHAT to write about (that’s even worse). I felt like I was working for them. That will never happen again. I’d rather not write anything about their product than being their personal whore.
Just show the product when you are ready. It’s not Sony’s fault that some critics want to be the first out of the gate. I respected that ELIC didn’t bend.
looks like we’re getting an early review!

Illuminating video Tero. I have watched it multiple times over the course of the week. People often forget how great of an actress Meryl is. I think she has set the bar so high, her brilliance is expected and taken for granted.
There are good clips of The Iron Lady online, but I posted this interview on another thread a few days ago. It’s worth the watch, cause she talks about the importance of Oscar.
