I loved ATTACK THE BLOCK.
but I showed it to my comp/lit class this term though, right before Thanksgiving. The reaction was extremely mixed–with mostly “alrights.” While a few loved it, a few downright hated it. I sensed a mostly “take it or leave it/mildly entertaining” response from them.
For some odd reason, I’d always been impressed with the film from the time I saw the first trailer…..(is there somewhere else I can take this? Other reactions from folks out there.
Ok, to clarify things, Shawn Edwards is the film critic for a Fox affiliate in Kansas City. He’s not on Fox News, but rather the local KC Fox news station. I wouldn’t hold the Fox connection against him, but that doesn’t mean he’s a legitimate critic either.
For some reason he’s managed to gain a kind of national prominence, mainly through being a blurb whore. Check the annual list of quote whores that gets published each year and you’ll almost always see him on there (he’s even won a time or two).
He resigned from (or was kicked out, depending on who you ask) the Kansas City Film Critics Circle after some dispute, about which the details are rather vague. (See here for more information: http://www.filmsnobs.com/www/edwards.php)
So all that to say, I wouldn’t take Shawn Edwards seriously as a film critic. Not in the least. So let’s not worry about what he does or doesn’t include. Only the studios really care, since he’s providing them fodder for their ads.
“Fox = hilarious. I’m surprised The Muppets isn’t on the ‘worst’ list…’
I’m surprised they don’t read the news on Fox.
The Beaver is excellent. 9/10 people who hate it haven’t seen it. The 1/10 people are just weird.
Fox = hilarious. I’m surprised The Muppets isn’t on the ‘worst’ list…
I think rather than criticizing him for hating a polarizing film, we should praise him for having a sort of eccentric list for a mainstream critic. Who woulda thought a critic would have Pariah, Attack the Block, The Beaver, Tree of Life, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close ON THE SAME LIST?
Well. The more I think about it the more I think Young Adult was pretty bad. But not worse than On Stranger Tides, or worse yet The Hangover Pt. II.
It’s too early but right now ELIC has a bigger BFCA score than Girl With Dragon Tattoo. 83 X 78
Remember: ELIC is oscar bait and has 2 of Hollywood’s 5 most powerful stars in it. Dragon Tattoo is not Oscar bait. Without the reviews, it’s completely out.
Deb, I’ve seen the film and simply disagree with you. It’s not just a matter of redemptive arc. I’ve seen the positive reviews but cannot get on board with them. The script needs work, and although Theron hit many notes of the character, I don’t think she has the comedic talent to bring the character alive. Diablo Cody didn’t help her with that, either. In drama, playing depression doesn’t work.
@Pierre de Plume– Clearly you haven’t seen the film… or you must have completely missed the boat. As I mentioned in another thread, Theron blew me away. She is working at a super high level in this film and I would go out on a limb and say it even tops her performance in MONSTER. The script isn’t unfortunate and it’s probably one of the most original a and daring ventures we have had in film this year.
OK this dude is ridiculous. The Beaver?! And yet Young Adult makes his worst? Mel Gibson is quite good in The Beaver and so is Anton Yelchin and the kid who plays Gibson’s son/Yelchin’s brother but the film does nothing for these standout performances.
YOUNG ADULT is a polarizing film. This dude most likely didn’t like the fact that the lead character has NO redemptive arc. That’s not a spoiler. I guess having all the TOP CRITICS RAVING about the film and its performance minus this dude (who I’ve never followed nor care what he thinks to be honest), means it’s a terrible right. Yeah right. Young Adult is probably the RISKIEST and balls to the walls, in the very best way, film that a major studio has picked up in a long time. GO SEE IT FOLKS.
It kind of blows my mind that people are dismissing what is ultimately a pretty uncontroversial list because it’s by a guy from Fox. Are you guys being serious? And people wonder why political debate is so vicious these days…words fail.
(And let’s just conveniently ignore that Fox TV is a subsidiary of the same company that is stumping for Shame, The Tree of Life, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, We Bought a Zoo, The Descendants, Martha Macy May Marlene, and others. So i guess the lesson is that we’re just going to dismiss their opinion if we disagree, not out of some principle.)
No, the new Twilight wasn’t great, but at least it had a bloody and terrifying childbirth sequence. Nothing in Pirates came even close to that. I’m surprised that Red Riding Hood, I Am Number Four, and The Rite didn’t make his list.
Are some of you confusing Fox TV and Fox News?
Anyone think that Tree of Life could end up winning BP for both Oscar and WP Razzie?
Pariah is on there, too. I think that’s worth noting. Not something one would expect on a Fox TV top ten list. And aside from Young Adult, the rest of his worst list is pretty spot on.
I’m surprised you’d post anything even remotely related to FOX, but since The Help is something you’re championing I really shouldn’t be surprised at all.
The Beaver was pretty good. I thought it was too short but as some of the late year contenders have proven to be duds I wondered if it wouldn’t get in somewhere.
I think I just found my third favourite film of the year – We Need to Talk About Kevin. Hell, yeah!

why are you guys always so possessive about movies you haven’t even seen?
I don’t agree with many of his choices, but I’m not disappointed to see Young Adult on his “worst” list. The film’s screenplay is unfortunate, and I don’t think Theron has the ability to completely pull off the role. I’ll be quite surprised, not to mention disappointed, if she gets an Oscar nomination for this failed effort.
This list is a joke, I assume.
Young Adult?! WORST ?!
8. The Beaver
Yay! and here I thought I was the only one that totally loved that film 🙂
Its about time tgwdt is mentioned
Finally Extremely Loud begins to make a show!!!! Woo Hoo!!!!
@Evan Ok, some people might criticize ‘Young Adult’, but I don’t it’s that bad that it needs to end up on the list of Worst Films. What’s next? A Razzie nomination for Charlize Theron??? And you haven’t noticed that ‘Breaking Yawn Part 1’ is not listed as the worst film of 2011.
I think I might be happier with this guy’s list than with NBR’s. Just sayin’.
And that’s not the only criticism I’ve heard of Young Adult.
Ok, so ‘Breaking Yawn Part 1’ or whatever it’s called, didn’t make it to the Worst Films list (‘Stranger Tides’ is apparently worse than ‘Breaking Yawn’), and ‘Young Adult’ is named in the Worst films list? I question the intelligence levels of this human being.
I’m actually excited by this list. The two remaining unknowns both make an appearance with ELAIC at number 2! (Can’t wait to see it. Loved the book.) And I’m thrilled to see “The Help” at number 1 and “The Descendants” nowhere to be found.
As soon as I saw “Fox TV”, I thought, “Who gives a fuck what this guy thinks?”
The Beaver? On a Best Picture of the year list? Coming from him, not surprising.
Ugh, you lost me at “Fox TV’s”.
Young Adult made the WORST movies list? Of course I’ll believe ANYTHING Fox TV says… <_<
