Just saw Albert Nobbs this morning – an incredibly handsome film (not without its problems), but Glenn Close is absolutely EXTRAORDINARY! As is Janet McTeer.
I thought Close was heartbreaking, and it reminded me how long its been since she’s had a role worthy of her talents.
I have a feeling, and I’m sticking to it – after 5 nominations, Close will win the Oscar in 2012.
You know I think Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 should get a best picture nod and so does Daniel Radcliffe for Best Actor and here’s why…and this goes for the Broadcast Film Critics Association and Golden Globes

When you look at that info you and everybody knows that Harry Pootter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 did better than every movie on that list I made.
Rooney Mara??? is it a joke??? I can not believe my eyes she is hopeless 🙂
TTSS, where?
Very happy about the – totally expected – noms for Midnight in Paris. It was always going to do well with the Foreign Press – I mean, it’s just opened in Italy and has already made $7.3 million over two weekends. That’s spectacular.
Again, Golden Globes prove how irrelevant they are. Ides of March, really?
The original timeframe for the nominations annoucements for precursors were at the END of December. It was that way for many years. Then prior to that, the original timeframe for announcing the precursor nominations were at the beginning of January, back when The Oscars used to be in March. For the past several years, there has been an odd trend of pushing it back. This was the first year they absurdly pushed back the timeframe as early as the second week of December. Dec.13-15 is the earliest that the precursor noms have ever been announced. That is what Tess and I kept griping about. Alot of other people have made note of the early timing which is why this awards race has had so many upsets for each precursors with many inconsistencies.
@Marie Why do you keep saying the timing of the nominations is off? I don’t feel like they’re off. I know I’ve always watched the Globe announcement at this point in December. Which ones were off?
I forgot to mention the talented Carey Mulligan. Some of these people need to wake up, I thought she was much better than Woodley.
I also love that Kate and Jodie got recognized for Carnage! The overlooked late releases that didn’t have the time to properly campaign are coming into the race with a bang!
Clooney…pffft. He is the most overrated of the year and he just knows how to schoomze. Tree of Life or even HP should have gotten in over Ides of March. However, I don’t think Ides will get much academy recognition.
The Descendants, sadly along with The Artist, is the top contender.
I loved Hugo but was frankly surprised that it emerged as a top contender. I guess I am rooting for it. I really hope the Academy chooses to recognize Ben Kingsley.
Yay for Brendon Gleeson! He was awesome in overlooked The Guard! 50/50 and Joseph Gordon-Levitt nods were well-deserved! TGWTDT getting an original score nomination as well as Best Actress is fantastic. My crack pick of Ryan Gosling made the list too!
There were some horrible snubs but The Golden Globe’s also spiced up the race with some very worthy inclusions.
I decided to break my resolve to not comment. This awards race due to the screwed-up timing of nomination annoucements has created the biggest mess yet. These are the biggest disparities between the precursors, I have ever seen. The Critics Choice Nominations, I felt were the most off.
Once again, wow. I do think the Academy will balance out some of the different BFCA, Guild, Globe, and BAFTA picks, so the nominations will be spread out with tons of inclusions.
Snubs: I am upset that Tree of Life got shut out but I am confident that won’t happen at the Oscars. I can’t believe Kung Fu Panda 2 got snubbed over Cars 2. I am also upset about Potter’s chances just being wiped out and the only chance to save some face is the BAFTA’s. Alexandre Desplat’s scores for HP, TOL, ELIC were brilliant. I’m sad that Elizabeth Olsen and Mia Wasikowska lost their traction.
I’m glad that Drive got snubbed but I honestly feel the Academy will give it some nominations because it got strong precursor support from BFCA and the Indie’s. It has a pretty aggressive campaign behind-the-scenes.
I am surprised that War Horse didn’t get as many nominations, I thought Spielberg would be a lock.
Wonderful Surprises: Once again, I am delighted for the wrongly maligned Jonah Hill. After receiving critical acclaim and a lot of buzz initially, alot of people turned against Jonah Hill, Glenn Close, and DiCaprio because the early critics’ picks created a bandwagon with out of left field expected nominees! I commented on this in another entry, but I thought Jonah Hill was excellent in Moneyball and proved his acting chops in a serious role. He proved his abilities by being the sensitive and rational counterpart to Pitt’s great performance. I’m also delighted that Moneyball’s intelligent script got a screenplay nomination.
I don’t understand why it has become fashionable to slam Leo and Close.
Leo gave a stellar and electrifying performance that is leagues better than frontrunners Clooney or Dujardin. Leo was at the top of the game and J.Edgar wasn’t that bad of a movie. Glenn Close gave a restrained, nuanced, and solid performance in Albert Nobbs. She also has body of work going for her like Meryl Streeps and Kate Winslet had that factor in that past, so I don’t get the double standard. Gary Oldman gave a fine performance but it wasn’t impressive compared to his competition. Though he is destined to get a BAFTA nom and he might make the Oscar cut because I know a lot of people are rooting for him in the industry.
Congratulations to Leo, Close, and Jonah Hill! This boosts their Oscar chances and they deserve it!
I am so happy for Viggo Mortensen. I personally felt he gave his most impressive performance in The Dangerous Method. I was shocked that it was getting snubbed and now he is in the race!
I am very happy that The Golden Globes is recognizing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, In the Land of Blood & Honey, and The Dangerous Method. These were three outstanding films that got screwed over due to the early timing of nom announcements. If it weren’t for the timeframe, I know these movies could have been top contenders. Rooney Mara was breath-taking and I am thrilled for her!
I don’t get it! Lots of people regretting that “Extremely Loud and Clear” did not get any nominations. Did any of these people see it? I don’t think so. What do they base their regret on? (See? I can’t even get the title right!)
What’s wrong with George Clooney? He’s gorgeous and talented. Is that what’s eating up some of the commentators?
Finally, I got to see “Tree of Life” on DVD last night. It took my breath away… literally. So many great films are ignored by the groups that give awards at the end of the year. Who cares? If you love a film, what difference would it make if it won a Golden Globe?
Yay 50/50. Yay Woody. Yay Marty. Boo no TTSS. Trent Reznor (and Ross) all the way!
Oh, and JP: Tom Hooper=Michael Curtiz.
wow the Foreign Press is really in love with Clooney.
If I were him I’d be afraid to go to this thing. I can’t imagine he’ll be able to take two steps without someone trying to hump his leg.
Oldman and Tinker, Tailor ignored again…. this is really bad……
I don’t know why anyone is surprised that Malick’s The Tree of Life is getting snubbed. Put bluntly, it has a large Christian undertone throughout the film. This theme isn’t something most working in Hollywood want to celebrate. So…I guess I don’t understand why some are disappointed.
The Globes did a lot better than SAG (I can’t believe I actually wrote that). I enjoyed The Ides of March immensely. I just wish Shame and Drive could get some traction. But at least they didn’t snub the best performance of the year (Fassbender).
Wow!
Bigges Disappointments:
1. Tree of Life missing out on Picture, Director, Screenplay
2. Drive missing out on Picture, Director, Screenplay
3. Winnie the Pooh missing out on Animated Film (It was a lot better than Cars 2)
I would not worry about Melissa McCarthy. She’ll show up at the Oscars. I’m guessing an American comedy focused on women behaving badly didn’t register much with this crowd. HFPA was never going to recognize her.
I do give them great credit for recognizing Gleeson. It’s a moving performance in a little gem of a movie. AMPAS will never recognize him. This is his moment.
I am mildly surprised and disappointed that Melancholia didn’t get any recognition — but can’t complain too much, since the Best Actress field is crowded, and Lars blew up his award chances at Cannes. It’s still one of the most powerful and interesting movies of the year.
Also: I wonder if the folks with ELIC and Dragon regret holding out their movies for so long. There’s still time to generate some momentum, but it seems like they just made things a lot harder on themselves.
Ugh. No Win Win. 🙁
Lily,
Yes, it is kind of surprising, especially since the film plays out more like a foreign film than an American one. You would have thought this orgnization in particular would have warmed up to “The Tree of Life” more.
Then again, this is an organization that just wants to schmooze with celebrities for one night. They probably felt that by honoring Pitt in Moneyball was enough to get his ass into the Beverly Hills Hotel ballroom for a “peek” at the pretty boy. His performance in “The Tree of Life” was one of the more complex characters he has brought to the screen, that’s for sure.
I only just saw The Tree of Life yesterday but i gotta say i’m beyond shocked it wasnt nominated. That movie is unlike anything i’ve ever seen. It was incredible! Jessica and Brad were amazing….. why weren’t they nominated??? And no director nomination. The emotion that Terrence captured was so special and beautiful, i’m so disappointed it wasn’t recognized.
Don’t count out ELIC. Let’s remember the Academy has a thing for Stephen Daldry. Remember “The reader” love in 2008?? No one saw that coming!!!
GREGOIRE:
“Brad and Angie over there, next to George Clooney. Look *waves* there’s Jodie and Leo and Charleze. Glamour, glamour, glamour all over the place. Excuse me, miss, can you take my coat? What? You’re name is Octavia and you’re a nominee? A NOMINEE? But who are you?”
YOU GAVE ME MY BIGGEST LAUGH OF THE DAY GREGOIRE! THANKS!
Scratching my head over some of the snubs this morning. Oldman, Redgrave, Alexandre Desplat, and Harry Potter Pt 2 in general. Criminal.
When looking over the HFPA choices this year, it occurs to me that these foreign journalists probably just want to schmooze for one evening with a bunch of Hollywood stars – regardless of talent.
Ryan Gosling should have been nominated for “Drive” instead. I felt he kind of walked through “The Ides of March” movie. The role wasn’t that demanding. Tomei, Clooney and Seymour Hoffman clearly out-acted him in every scene. His was more of a reactionary role, which is the easiest kind to pull off.
I’m anticipating the upcoming guild nominations where I think HP&TDH Pt 2 will make a much better showing by achieving nominations in multiple technical categories. That may give it the last needed push it may need to obtain a BP nomination.
Heh, at least I’m hopeful!
Alexander Desplat snubbed… His Potter score is one of the best this year.
Scott: The “babe” factor doesn not work in the Supporting category. The reason why all those women that you listed won was because they had all been famous for a while and here there were in a showy almost-lead performance that they could award them an Oscar as a “we like what you did with your career so far”.
What I see now for Oscars are this:
– still a potential for EL&IC to surprise on oscar nom morning (The Reader, people). i.e., picture, director, von sydow, bullock, score.
– TTSS popping up, but only in a few tech categories, at this point.
also, the important thing to remember when predicting oscar nominations is the word “middlebrow”. “bridesmaids” is far too lowbrow to ever get any oscar nominations. movies like “tree of life” are far too cerebral for the academy. this is why movies like “the artist” (look! it’s a silent movie!) and “the descendants” (look! it’s about grieving!) fare so well: they’re not too confusing and really not that smart but they’re smart enough for voters to feel pretty smart when casting their votes.
@knee_play:
Or if you play a method actor who gets his skinned darkened to play black for a role
Or if you play a fast-talking broad who knows something about cars
Or if you play Jack Sparrow
I’m sooooo happy 6that the HFPA show a little love for Jodie and Kate.
are people actually expecting melissa mccarthy to get an oscar nomination? it’s never going to happen. it’s the oscars. you get nominated for an oscar if you’re in a period piece, play a dead actor/singer, dying gay man, controversial politician, poet, writer or any other kind of artist. you don’t get nominated for an oscar for having diarrhea in a sink in a comedy. not happening.
!!!!!!! GARY OLDMAN !!!!!!!
Someone please tell the powers that be to take a look at Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. Please.
I think some people are going to have to get over the fact that The Tree of Life is not a movie for everybody, it has no mass appeal. The two times I saw it in theatres (had to leave sick the first try), more than 10 people walked out each time. It is theological, philosophising on film, it is long and it is thematically dense. So the lack of it at something like the Golden Globes shouldn’t be a shock to anybody. I still think it has a BP shot at Oscar, especially because of the way the nomination process works now and I know it has its fair share of fanatical supporters.
Also, Drive sucked the big one, and Gosling got his dues for the right film. Drive is stylistically good… I guess. First hour was almost unbearably dull, soundtrack was ridiculous, Mulligan and Gosling have no chemistry, and then it becomes this ridiculous, over the top splatter fest with Gosling’s Driver knocking off gangsters as if he was the T-1000. Like, give me a break. What was so great about it? Please. I really would like someone to explain to me.
I think some people are going to have to get over the fact that The Tree of Life is not a movie for everybody, it has no mass appeal.
Movies that are for everybody are not for me.
Movies with mass appeal don’t appeal to me.
how dare they snub Jason Reitmans brilliant comedy and best comedy of the year: YOUNG ADULT:(
@ Ryan H
My point is that even if they thought the film was REALLY bad, they would throw it a couple of nominations just because it’s crowded of stars and they love Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks.
I think Slant Magazine, who released their list of the 25 best films of the year today, has a pretty good take on world cinema.
The Muppets snub is surprising. Gary Oldman snub is just sad. I called The Ides Of March as my alternate choice for BP drama yesterday, so I can’t say that it was surprising to me. But nominating Gosling for that over Drive is just plain wrong.
Good: Swinton, Fassbender, Mara, Mortensen, McTeer, no Spielberg.
Bad: No Redgrave, Clooney, no Mulligan.
Such an exciting day! I was really suprised for all the Ides Of March love! But so happy for Hugo, The Descendants, sad for The Muppets!
@Rich Ummm, did you see the nominees last year? This year’s batch looks like Sight and Sound comparatively.
Ricky Gervais is going to totally roast on these nominees this year, more than last year for sure with this selection.
So, Jonah Hill is happening.
Ugh.
I have such affection for all the actors nominated in drama and comedy. What a line up. I’m not saying they’d all be my choice for a nomination, but as far as movie star actor appeal and hollywood glamour, which lets face it is as much a part of the Golden Globes circus as honoring film, it’ll be a dreamy night indeed.
Glad Fassbender was nominated for Shame. Mulligan, however, didn’t make the cut in the supporting actress category. 🙁
Brad and Angie over there, next to George Clooney. Look *waves* there’s Jodie and Leo and Charleze. Glamour, glamour, glamour all over the place. Excuse me, miss, can you take my coat? What? You’re name is Octavia and you’re a nominee? A NOMINEE? But who are you?
@Alexandra than how come Harry Potter 8 wasn’t nominated for best picture in not only the Golden GLobe Awards, but alot of Critic Awards in a few states across the US?
Boring list as I expected.
what’s with the first comment? everyone says rooney mara was brilliant. if youre gonna be the first comment dont act outraged about something that no one else agrees with.
i think best song is most indicative of the hfpa’s thinking. no muppets, all star songwriters–looks like we’re back to the sharon stone days. I mean, can they have a year when angelina jolie isn’t nominated for something? they really want those tv ratings
Is it just me or are the Globe nomination significantly better than the SAGs? Fassbender, Mara, Theron all made it in and deservedly so. And the supporting roles are WAY better- Albert Brooks>Armie Hammer, Viggo Mortesen> Nick Nolte, and Shailene Woodley> Melissa McCarthy. The real shockers are The Ides of March everywhere (even Director), Speilberg snubbed for director (interesting), and Extremely Loud extremely shut out. I just don’t buy the “not enough saw it” excuse, its December 15th. Perhaps we’ll find out if its up to snuff tomorrow when the embargo breaks.
I understand some of the complaints about Tree of Life and Drive, but the HFP is not artsy like critics groups are. I’m not expecting the Academy to recognize either film much either…except for Cinematography.
Dan says:

Movies that will last the ages in English this year?
Well obviously Harry Potter will :p
Can I get a WOO WOO for Michael Fassbender’s nom?! 🙂
With the best of lists being so all over the place, this is as good a list as any the HFPA could come up with. Movies that will last the ages in English this year? None, as far as I can tell, except for Tree of Life, I guess, for it’s own peculiar reasons.
The only reason for not giving noms to Extremely Loud is because not enough members have seen it because even if it was really mixed to bad, they would nominate it because of the stars… Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks.
And it’s amazing how one of the greatest actors of all time is not getting nominated but Johah Hill is.
Don’t know if Extremely Loud is dead for a BP nomination. True Grit was entirelly shut out of the Golden Globes and still got 10 Oscar nominations. The producer of both films is the same although I think Rudin’s strategy this year has been stupid.
OCO 300…the Globes are 100 foreign journalists that don´t have anything to do with the 5800 members of the Motion Pictures Academy…
Hugo FTW!!!! Who would have thought Scorsese’s latest masterpiece would be a children’s film in 3D?! i didn’t see that coming! And I love it!!! 🙂
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is officially dead. Face it people !
Love for Madonna and Angelina. It was kind of expected… Whatever i guess.
I think many movie’s chances are quite dead. But do not fear for Harry Potter or Redgrave, they will always have the BAFTAS (I LOVE thos awards).
No McCarthy for Bridesmaids? That’s odd…
Rooney Mara is surprisingly named but I believe the ship of her Oscar nom has sailed. The fact that Michelle and Charlize are on the other category, makes her chances dissipate.
No Muppets on best song ? WTF right ?
Oh no, Oldman and Redgrave missed out here too? Face it people, it’s not happening for them this year.
Aside from The Ides of March and Leonardo Dicaprio, those are some pretty good nominees. The race is all over the place this year.
I don’t believe this, first Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and now Kung Fu Panda 2?! Does the Academy have anything against fantasy films or high grossing films?
I’m amazed that anyone’s complaining about these nominations. Sure, they could’ve been a little better, but they also could’ve been a LOT worse. Remember last year? These nominations are the Globes in top form. The movies in the Comedy awards are actually comedies and actually good films.
Tree of Life’s absence is sad, but that’s not really a Globes movie (it’s not really an Oscar movie either, but it’s more that than a Globes movie). As for ELIAC, that may be dead in the water, but maybe not: the Oscars usually like Stephen Daldry more than any other awards group, right?
As for The Ides of March, I’m happy for them. It’s not the best film of the year, but it’s better than the other awards groups have given them credit for.
I’m sad that Carey Mulligan missed out. Guess there’s no hope for Elizabeth Olsen anymore either. Also wish Gosling would have been nominated for Drive, and that the film would have gotten more love in general.
Nice to see 50/50 nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor.
Chastain should have been nommed for Take Shelter, but I am glad she is here for anything. It helps her chances of being nominated for an Oscar for something, rather than losing out because the nomination votes split amongst all her great roles this year. I think if she is nominated for The Help, she becomes the front runner based on the hot babe theory (Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Penelope Cruz, Rahcel Weisz, Cate Blanchett).
SO GLAD that Nick Nolte wasn’t nominated for Warrior. What an awful movie, not to mention a complete rip-off of Rocky. Nolte’s a great actor but he just did nothing except act like Mickey throughout the whole film. Why would the SAGs nominate him over Albert Brooks? Thank god for once that the Golden Globes are actually smarter than the SAGs and nominated Brooks. I still think Brooks can win it all.
Also why is everyone complaining about Ides of March? It’s a great film and I’m glad its buzz hasn’t died out yet. Sure I would’ve preferred to see Gosling get nominated for Drive over Ides, but don’t discount it because of that. George Clooney is kind of like the new Warren Beatty in some ways. Writes, directs, produces, and stars in smart political thrillers. I’m glad the Globes recognized that.
They snubbed Kungfu Panda2. Tsk Tsk.
Zach,
It is really too bad about Nolte, but confident he is going to get that Oscar nod.
I liked.
But I´d like to see Gosling nominated for “Drive”.
And i missed Vanessa Redgrave and Ralph Fiennes here.
So happy For Close double nom – GO, CLOSE, GO!!! -, for Kenneth Branagh, Leo DiCaprio, Swinton and Woody Allen and “Midnight in Paris”.
Shocked for Spielberg snubbed for “War Horse”.
Let´see…
Generally I’m happy with the list. At lease all the the deserved films are recognized. Here some thought:
-not really surprised with The Tree of Life and Dive snubbed, this was expected.
-What happens with The Muppets? The Muppets is the only movie that have Comedy + Musical factors, and it successes critically and financially. I don’t get it.
-Cars 2 for animation. Well, I hope they’d make wiser choice like: Chico & Rita or A Cat in Paris.
-All nominees for Best Foreign Language are very high profile and solid. Still, Le Havre should’ve been nominated.
-No Oldman, Olsen, Redgrave, Melissa McCarthy; which might hurt its chances of Oscar nomination.
-They over-praised The Ides of March, but it might be a film that end up win nothing.
-I’m super fond of Best Comedy Actor and Comedy Actress shortlists. Great list overall
Not one person has mentioned the absence of Nick Nolte. At this point does Jonah Hill have a better shot than him? Or is this Jonah this year’s Mila Kunis?
The Help got 5 not 4 nominations, tied with Descendants for 2nd most for a movie, you cheeky beggar. Trying to down play it. Ha!
Swinton, Winslet (twice), McTeer, Brannagh, Elton John, Irons, Lewis, Garai, Watson, Bonneville, Elba, Nighy, West, MacDonald, Smith. That’s 16 nominations for the Brits in the acting and songwriting categories. 2 more for Downton and The Hour. Not a bad effort. We Rock
I guess Extremely Loud and Incredibly’s best shot right now is to make a splash in the box office, coupled with good reviews of course. Man, if this Extremely Loud is really good then it would really be a shame if they get snub because of the timing of release
Harry Potter and Gary Oldman are screwed. Michael Fassbender is is serious trouble. And The Help continues to slide by on mediocrity and three very good performances. Ugh.
these nominations are throw-up language
I’m surprised Star Spangled Man isn’t there – I love that song.
Upset about the McCarthy snub but even more upset about The Mupppets being completely shut out! Come on! Not even one for Best Song for “life’s a happy song” or “Man or Muppet”?
Lord the HFP isn’t even pretending to be credible anymore. They are the biggest star fuckers and proud of it.
Ridiculous that Crazy, Stupid, Love didn’t make the comedy picture category…
Anyways, has anyone found The Artist online to watch? I have an intense desire now to see it now and make a verdict if it’s deserving of all this praise, as opposed to having to wait until after the Oscars and rent it on DVD
The two best working craftsmen working today are cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and composer Alexandre Desplat. This year, they have The Tree of Life and EL&IC, respectively. Their best work to date has been on Children of Men and Curious Case of Benjamin Button, respectively.
Yah, ToL is beautiful and a wonderful film because of Lubezki’s work, but his cinematography on Children of Men was gritty, intense, never broken because of longer takes (notice that they did not cut when the fake blood landed on the lense at the end of the film…a great move to emphasize gritty yet gorgeous cinmematography). Not to forget that the cinematography served the film, rather than the other way around. I personally don’t think anyone should win for a film that was designed as a showcase to display their talents. Bring us a great film and let us discover the behind-the-camera elements that make the film worthwhile, don’t shove it in our faces.
Yah, EL&IC has a moving, haunting score, but in benjamin button, Desplat creates a new time, a new world. He allows us to escape our own dramatic, fractured lives and escape into a world as beautiful as it is perfect. As the film takes a beat, the score follows in-step.
Best Actor Drama is battle of the handsome devils. should boost ratings.
The Best Director category is strange…Clooney will not scores a nom at DGA and Oscar, that was just for this time.
I’m still think that Malick will be nominated at DGA and Oscars, because of the voters (only directors…).
But The Spielberg thing makes me doubt about his chances at oscars…
I don’t believe in Woody Allen, don’t know why 😀
Stephen Daldry is in trouble but, be careful. The film is not released yet. I think he can do it.
Nobody talks about David Fincher. O.K he didn’t score a single nomination in big events and it’s not good at all, but…i don’t know…I think he can be the big surprise at the DGA and oscar.
Clooney needs a “Maggio” moment…great guy, charming, funny, handsome, activist…just once I’d like to see him get an award for being the great actor we know is in there instead of “just because” of the above stated. Ides was was too predictable and really weak…casting Giamiatti and Hoffman were excellent choices though…given the crap they had to spew only great actors could have made it all sound almost plausible..,or perhaps the thought was how can you loose surrounding yourself with a President and a Priest….even if you are hardly in the movie. Descendents…two hours before they pulled the plug(?) in between boring dialogue, close-ups with no dialogue…just was not worthy of all the hype…perhaps that’s why “all they hype.” The youngest daughter was the best thing in that movie. George, love ya but sorry…you need a “Maggio” moment.
Cannot believe they passed over Melissa McCarthy…I hope Wiig gets it…great movie!!! Puss ‘n Boots was one of the best out there as well.
Argh. Why Mara? I still get annoyed with the fact that they remade a perfectly good film.
Congrats to Angelina Jolie for the nomination!
The only category im happy for is the best actress comedy/musical ( happy for Theron and Williams), i agree with most posters here, Close and the overarted Nobbs Albert shouldn’t be nominated at the academy awards, there at least 2 actresses who deliver a better much more worthy performances!!
Overall these are good nominations. Sure a few things are left out, but there aren’t any SHAMELESS nominations outside the tongue lapping they’re giving George Clooney. But he’s terrific in The Descendants so this isn’t a false gesture.
But where they are REALLY fantastic is in the TV categories. Makes the SAG Awards look ridiculous. The Golden Globes recognize and nominate fresh quality and go off the grid with finding deserving nominees.
Madeleine Stowe got her Golden Globe nominations the moment she was cast on Revenge. Hers is the kind of comeback — and in the kind of role — that the Golden Globes salivate over.
Best Supporting Actress is interesting, but I think it’s going to be an actress from The Help. Octavia gives the best performance in the movie, but Chastain is great, plus she’s in forty other films this year. She really should be nominated for her work in The Debt or Take Shelter instead. She’s such an amazing actress that I’m giving the edge to her.
When they rematch at the Oscars, I’m not sure. If Chastain got in for Take Shelter (over The Help), I can guarantee you she would win. But The Help seems to have the momentum.
Speaking of — UGH< NO MICHAEL SHANNON AGAIN?!
Here’s something to think about with Tree of Life being snubbed. The more Tree of Life is snubbed the easier it is for the members of the academy not too consider it for Best Picture. It’s kind of a psychological thing. If the critics aren’t giving it BP then most Academy members are probably not feeling so bad about marking it on their ballots. I think that Tree of Life is out of the BP running but it may still squeak a nomination. I doubt it. I also think that if Malik is not nominated in the Best Director category for Oscar, which would surprise me that Steven Speilburg may get that slot. Clooney won’t make the Best Director cut for a nomination.
Best Actor nom for Oscar is probably going to be Clooney, Dujardin, Fassbender, Di Caprio and Pitt. Actress will be Streep, Swinton, Davis, Williams and the last spot will be the toss up and I think that might go to Theron. I don’t think Close stands a chance.
I actually like the five men nominated for Best Supporting Actor. So glad to see Melissa McCarthy out of that category. But the Academy might sub her for Janet McTeer. McTeer might be the only nomination that Albert Nobbs gets for Oscar.
Sad to see the Von Sydow is not recognized but there isn’t any room for him unless the Academy dumps Jonah Hill. Not sure they will do that but it is Von Sydow and he is an Icon.
Where is Twilight Breaking Down. IMO, it’s the best film in the entire film industry ever. I can’t believe it. The worst news ever.
So happy for Jodie Foster, truly deserving of that nom, and Winslet. They are fantastic in Carnage. She hasn’t been nominated since 2007 – The Brave One.
Also very happy Jessica Chastain keeps getting noticed for her marvelous turn in The Help.
Actually I thought the academy could have fould a middle term between the big blockbuster and the big indie awarding Inglorious Basterds, a film that made more than 100 million dollars and the best screenplay of that year. Unfortunatelly Harvey got it wrong that time and got it right this year with King’s Speech.
Is GLENN CLOSE slowly becoming an Oscar frontrunner – for BEST SONG?
LOL, Madonna won’t win an Oscar for the song. She won’t even be NOMINATED!
The Oscar rules say that a song which plays over the end credits of a film can only be eligible for a nomination if it’s the first music queue played during the end credits. Reportedly, it does not appear as the first music queue. Well, Weinstein has to hurry if he is to re-edit the credits…
The funniest thing is, that this is Madonna’s SIXTH nomination as a song writer at the GG. Who’s That Girl?, This Used to Be My Playground, I’ll Remember, Beautiful Stranger and Die Another Day were all nominated before Masterpiece. Sadly, her best original song to a film (Time Stood Still for The Next Best Thing) was overlooked. But how many Oscar nominations have all the Golden Globe nominations resulted in? NONE!
Yes, Madonna should have been able to call herself an Oscar nominee already thanks to some great songs, but they don’t like her.
Even if Masterpiece IS eligible, they don’t nominate end credit songs anymore. The nomination jury has to come to a screening where they see clips of the first two minutes of every eligible song AS THEY APPEAR IN THE FILM. Which means, a song that appears DURING a film is much more likely to get nominated because it’s used in a context. Watching boring credits roll for two minutes does NOT inspire someone to nominate you.
That’s why previous early winner favorites (like Springsteen’s The Wrestler song) was not even nominated.
Best Song category NEVER adds up with the same Oscar category. Usually only one or two songs are nominated at both the Oscars and the Globes.
I’m actually beginning to think that GLENN CLOSE could win an Oscar this year – as a songwriter. It would be the perfect place for voters to award her, if they don’t want to get behind her performance (if she’s snubbed in Lead Actress and the song is nominated, that gives her an even bigger edge to get votes for song).
If two Muppet songs get nominated along with Close’s song, chances are they will cancel each other out.
Exciting…
Anyways: Again, so many double nominees this year. The funniest thing is that Gosling is nominated TWICE, but not for the film that’s been gathering great momentum and accolades by the critics.
AND WHO THE HELL IS THE FRONTRUNNER TO WIN BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS?
With McCarthy AND Redgrave snubbed today, who is the frontrunner? McTeer can’t possibly win, Shaileen is too young and seem to have a very nomination-able performance, not a WINNING performance. Octavia Spencer would SEEM to be the frontrunner, but if Chastain is nominated against her, won’t Chastain’s many fans from her other numorous performances this year steal away from Spencer? Can she actually end up BEATING Spencer, even though Spencer deserves the win more if you only regard The Help. Does that make BEJO the winner, although the film belongs to Dujardin and she’s all-in-all just along for the awards ride?
I still think Spencer, McCarthy and Redgrave CAN win the Oscar. They just have to be nominated first… And if Chastain doesn’t get a Help nomination, it’s truly Spencer’s to lose…
Why are people so upset? They actually nominated all good films in the categories this year, unlike last year with The Tourist or Burlesque.
Paulh, The Hurt Locker was the only time in the last 15 years that the academy got BP right. Avarta made a lot of money but is not a good movie. The Artist is the best picture of this year by far. The academy for better or worst should give the BP oscar to the picture they like best regardless how much noney it made. This is not the peoples choice awards.
Rooney Mara over Olsen? What a joke! I guess the marketing scheme worked well for her with the HFP!
Happy for Viggo and for Fassy. But very disappointed for the best pic lineup with no Tree of Life, No Tinker, And I agree enough with George Clooney really!
I hope that nomination day it is going to be better than this!
C A R N A G E !!!!
Jonah Hill for supp over Patton Oswalt seriously?? this is so wrong, hope Oswalt will get his nods at the oscars, and Clooney over Malik please?? In the land of blood and whatever the hell is nominated LOl?
Amanda says:
Hollywood needs to stop with it’s Clooney love. It really is disgusting. I get it he is your new King of Hollywood but there are so many more deserving actors/directors/writers out there, so just please stop.
AGREE 100%!!!
I’m convinced that The Artist is getting attention just for being connected to Weinstein. Never understood the buzz for it, and never will.
Also didn’t think The Descendants deserve the buzz as well.
I am still rooting for Hugo but TGWTDT and War Horse can convince me otherwise. Granted I’m rooting for kid’s books turned movies but it seems adults (voting bodies) see it only as kid’s fair.
Desplat snub… what is wrong with these people.
If there’s anybody who says that Gary Oldman & TTSS didn’t get nominated due to lack of British voters and that the BAFTAs will help them in their Oscar campaign, please tell me how did Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet & Kenneth Branagh (British) and Brendan Gleeson & Michael Fassbender (Irish) get nominated? Surely, they didn’t require any British voting blocs to come to their aid…
“…plus the fact we may see Madonna win an Oscar, in the end (in the cathegory she actually would have deserved it long ago, lol).”
At least two noms: Into The groove, This Used to be my Playground, Beautiful Stranger, I’ll Remember, Crazy For You.
@ Deveylow
First, I said he did TWO of the most successful. I meant in terms of awards. I actually haven’t seen neither. I have absoloutely no doubt that he is mediocre at best compared to the guys he beat… few of the most inventive directors of our time… Fincher, Aronofsky, the Cohens, the unominated Nolan, Boyle. You can say… what he did was directing actor. In this case, O. Russell did it much better in The Fighter. Hooper’s not creative and there’s nothing extraordinary in his directing, there’s not a Tom Hooper style. He simply makes awards bait productions.
This list of nominations is awesome way better than SAG. 50/50, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Rooney Mara, Viggo Mortensen all well deserved. I actually liked The Ides of March very much and was wondering why there was no love for it anywhere. Ryan Gosling had a good year so I’m happy for the praise for him. His best performance of the year was in the Ides and it boggled my mind when he was getting nominated for drive (Which he was also good in, just not better). My only compliant obviously is the no love for Drive (picture, director) or David Fincher, and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The Comedy/Musical category is actually really good other than last year which was a big joke.
After today I know for sure that a Golden Globe voting ballot is just a table seating map.
GETTING SO TIRED OF THE NO Tree of Life! Im really starting to get worried its really in danger of not making the oscar cut for best picture and for best director which would be a REAL shame! crossing my fingers the DGA save Terrence Malick as he is soo deserving! The BAFTA at this point is all that bring Vanessa Redgrave back from the ashes, so heres to hoping they do.
Hollywood needs to stop with it’s Clooney love. It really is disgusting. I get it he is your new King of Hollywood but there are so many more deserving actors/directors/writers out there, so just please stop.
It was expected that Malick gets no nomination. They want attendence from the stars. Malick wouldn’t have attended. They probably should’ve changed Clooney for Spielberg to get more big names. Clooney is there anyway.
wow the Foreign Press is really in love with Clooney. They even nominated Gosling for Ides of March instead of the awesome Drive. And really dont get all this love for The Help. I mean its ok, but it aint no Tinker Tailor.
No Tree of Life, Extremely Loud, Muppets, Oldman, Olsen, Kingsley. But good to see Midnight in Paris, 50/50, Fassbender, Swinton, Mortensen get in.
Lol, Gerard Butler didn’t write his movie’s song, but my mother would be so happy to see him nominated.
And agrre whith Zach, Cars 2? Really??
“If the Artist wins BP, then the Oscas will lose whatever supporters they didnt alienate when they picked The Hurt Locker over Avatar.”
Well, they probably lost the 10 guys that thought the Oscars were actually worth shit last year when they gave “The King’s Speech” and Tom Pooper the awards they SO MUCH DESERVED (yeah, still pissed about that jokeshit)
I love jessica Chastain… but no in the help…
And why everything that George Clooney do is nominated??
A nomination for best director? Duh
But i love Meryl Streep and Fassbender in the Globes!!!
Cars 2? Over Kung Fu Panda 2 or Happy Feet 2?
Though the Golden Globes fear better than SAG I think its quite ridiculous this year. Well YEAH I got my NGNG nomination with In the land of Blood and Honey nominated for foreign language film……they really really want Brangelina to attend their party, dont they?
This is a complete joke. Never seen such a group as a total star fucker. George Clooney over Malick as best director? WTF?
ROONEY & VIGGO!!!!!!!!!
my life is coplete:) thank U GG!
I don’t think Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is dead yet. Leave that to that BAFTAs to bring it back for at least one nomination at the Oscars (though I don’t think it’ll be Gary Oldman). Also I really don’t mind the love for The Ides of March. Does it seem fishy? Yeah, but not like last year because they actually nominated all GOOD films from this year, (well I haven’t seen W.E yet so…). Either way the majority of good films make up these nominations. Also still happy to see Ryan Gosling with two Best Actor nominations, even though neither of them were for Drive (the best film of the year). Still at least happy that they payed attention to Albert Brooks who gave the Best Performance of the Year in my opinion.
Where is Alexandre Desplat? The Muppets?
JP wrote: “They prefer to award a mediocre director… but who had already built a name in TV, made 2 of the most sucessful minisseries of the decade – Elizabeth I and John Adams… is not Hazanavicu’s case).”
Um…Tom Hooper did a wonderful job on both those miniseries – which you call “the most successful miniseries of the decade” — do you think those two shows directed themselves. I am so sick of him being called “mediocre.”
Hey, glad to see that my Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) pick/s–Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet for “Carnage”–made it to the shortlist! 🙂
@PaulH – Viola Davis is absolutely the lead of The Help. It is totally and completely Aibileen’s journey.
Do we know if they were screened EXTREMELY LOUD?
I Have still hopes for David Fincher as Best director at DGA and Oscars^^…but not so much :D. He’s seems to be dead. too bad.
At least they didn’t nominate Armie Hammer…that’s a redeeming thing about the Globes.
Best Director is interesting. I’d say, Hazanavicius, Payne, Scorsese are locked in.
The remaining slots will be two of these:
Allen, Clooney, Malick, Refn or Spielberg.
I think Malick will get in DGA & Oscars.
Refn would be my other choice.
Oscar final:
Hazanavicius
Malick
Payne
Refn
Scorsese
At least 50/50 and JGL FINALLY got some recognition. But the lack of love for Drive is embarrassing.
The Help has been getting alot of love this award season. I think it could get 7 nods come Oscar
Best Picture
Best supporting actress
Best Supporting Actress
Best Actress
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Song
Best costum
Nothing for “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”…? I am crushed. How is that possible? Didn’t anyone have time to look at their screeners?
Whoever’s dissing Drive can suck it. It still got a nomination!
I wish Elizabeth Olsen would’ve gotten a nom. Her performance was layered and beautifully complex. I wish McCarthy would’ve made it. I know some don’t think the performance deserves it but I am in the camp that believes it does. I think Berenice Bejo was nothing special in The Artist, neither was Jessica Chastain in The Help. I would’ve rather seen one of them bumped for McCarthy.
Who the fuck in Brendan Gleeson?
Ever hear of Google or IMDB?
Are you serious with that post? Especially here?
My concern with The Artist is that I don’t see the Academy giving and unknown french director a Best Directing Oscar over names like Scorcese, Spielberg, Allen, Malick and Payne, 5 of the American most acclaimed filmakers.
Considering the Best Directing hardly ever doesn’t match with Picture… (last year pretty much was a proof of that… although The King Speech was of course getting BP, most (I’m one of them) thought they would give Fincher the award based on the sucess of The Social Network in the first half of the season. Wrong. They prefer to award a mediocre director… but who had already built a name in TV, made 2 of the most sucessful minisseries of the decade – Elizabeth I and John Adams… is not Hazanavicu’s case).
That’s why I think Scorcese takes directing and Hugo takes Best Picture.
@PaulH Brendan Gleeson = Mad Eye Moody
no tree of life? no drive? … no balls
Looking at this list, I have like nothing to root for. LOL That’s never happened in what, two decades of watching this show. Cripes. lol I think HUGO is the best movie of the year that I’ve seen so far but if it wins this or not doesn’t really matter. I need a little guy to root for, an underdog type, but I don’t have one. What a year. I guess I’ll just have to enjoy the red carpet. Wow. It must be old age.
And who the fuck is Brendan Gkeeson?
Streep’s GG noms are greater than my age. 😀
I enjoyed The Help but come on, it’s a 2h 26m movie about a bitch eating a shit pie… how is it become best picture material?
Allen, Scorsese, Close, Streep, Foster, Branagh, Brooks…I’m getting a serious ’80s vibe here!!
If the Artist wins BP, then the Oscas will lose whatever supporters they didnt alienate when they picked The Hurt Locker over Avatar.
Best Picture
Hugo
Moneyball
Best Director
Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Best Actress, Drama
Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Best Score
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
Hugo, Howard Shore
War Horse, John Williams
Best Screenplay
Moneyball, Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin
Yay! I’m pleased 😀 also, wtf with all the love for Ides and Madonna? No Muppets for song?
I’m more positive on these nominations than SAGs. Sad like others to see Drive and Tree of Life snubbed. Best Actress Comedy/Musical is on of the strongest that category has seen in years. So happy they gave 50/50 recognition in best picture and Gordon-Levitt in best actor. Both very well-deserved. NO Melissa McCarthy–I’m in the minority, but THANK GOD. Such an overrated performance and it’s a bit shocking that she missed out here considering this is the place most likely to honor her (and she also missed out on TV Actress Comedy–weird day for her). This will not be good for her Oscar campaign. Also happy to see Viggo nominated in supporting actor.
NO to Glenn Close, Janet McTeer, and everything Albert Nobbs. When will the love for this dreadful, dreary, sloppy movie end? Such a snooze and I’m hoping Oscar snubs it. Jonah Hill? Really? Again? And I was pretty lukewarm on The Ides of March so I am surprised (but not really shocked, given the star pedigree of the film and how that must entice the HFPA) that it showed up so prominently here. Wish Gosling had been cited for Drive instead of this.
the burial of Harry Potter Oscar chances, plus the fact we may see Madonna win an Oscar, in the end (in the cathegory she actually would have deserved it long ago, lol).
So, it’s going to be The Artist vs. the Drama winner for the Oscar. Making Hugo, Moneyball and The Descendants clash in the Globes is going to subtlely make voters think the choice for Oscar is between The Artist and the rest. The Artist is winning.
Happy to see Fassbender back in the mix after the SAG snub. But even I have to admit the HFPA wanted the most glamorous best actor lineup possible, and they got it! For this group, it’s all about who shows up to the big party.
Ryan Murphy shows always have a strong first season, then deteriorate into jibberish from season 2 on. Yay for no Fast Drive Furious; boo on Fassbender. Still think the subject matter will be his doom next month. Bah humbug for another group fellating over the gimmick French silent movie. And could Dujardin have been more of a train wreck for his Today Show interview? Still think there’s a bit of category fraud re; Davis. Should be in supporting w/Spencer since Emma Stone was the lead.
I’m not sure the Tree of Life shutout means anything for the oscars. Tree of Life will undoubtable get nominations for Cinematography and some other fields so I don’t think it’s impossible that it might snag that 7th (or 8th) BP spot.
Things are not looking good for Elizabeth Olsen 🙁
How is it possible that Mcarthy didn’t get a nom here??
Redgrave and Oldman are dead. Officially.
Desplat and Drive score not nominated. Those are not snubs, sorry to reiterate but it’s the sign that HFPA is just a party not an award for the best of cinema. The Golden Globallshit
Personal reactions.
Ryan Gosling was great in Crazy, Stupid, Love., but it was Steve’s movie. Sorry to see him (and the picture) missed out on a well deserved nomination.
Can’t say I am surprised that nobody is nominated Winnie the Pooh, don’t think anybody else saw it.
No song nominations for Star Spangled Man or the great songs from Winnie the Pooh or The Muppets.
Ides of March was boring Oscar bait and not one of the best movies of the year, but would rather see that get rewarded for J. Edgar which is a bad film. Was expecting the Globes to award that.
Wow W.E.!! Hopefully it will transfer to oscars it deserves them.
Drive and Tree of life are the 2 most overrated movies of the year
Where is Vanessa Redgrave?!
6 Noms for The Artist, 5 each for The Descendants and The Help. But Hugo and Marty will WIN!
I believe Michelle Williams will win best actress in comedy whereas Tilda will win best actress in drama. I do believe, the Oscar will snub Glenn this year since it’s a strong year for actress even though she nominates for both gg and sag (Same thing as Mila Kunis (gg and sag) but fail to receive an Oscar nom. My believe for the oscar nom will be Williams, Davis, Swinton, Streep and Theron.
2 nominations for Winslet!
Oh, yeah, love the nominations for American Horror Story – last night’s episode was enthralling that most movies I see. Glad to see it nominated (although they overlooked Breaking Bad, which seems to be a major oversight)
woodley would have been the best NGNG call ever.
I forgot one snub… Alexander Desplat… ridiculou how the greatest composer of the year was shut out of the Critics Choice and the Globes.
Jonah Hill? AGAIN? HAHAHAHAHA
HUGO is AMAZING!! Scorsese’s very possible addition into the Two-Time Oscar Winning Director club (which he should have been in since 1981!!) will be most deserving. HUGO towers over most of the films this year.
Biggest snubs:
– ELIC
– Tree of Life
– McCarthy
Unecessary ressurrection: The Ides of March
JP, Weistein must have compromising pics of half the HFPA to get as many noms as he got. And nobody seems to want to call him out on it.
Viggo!!
ELIAC completely shut out. Hugo? NO.
Gosling with 2 nominations, but not for Drive (sadly) which doesn’t bode well for Drive at the Oscars. I don’t get The Ides of March love. That’s kind of out of nowhere.
No nomination of Spielberg, which I find hugely satisfying, so maybe that will cause some of the War Horse fever to dissipate.
Sadly, no majors for Tree of Life, which I thought might be possible once they said The Artist was in comedy. But then I thought twice and realized the snub was predictable.
Congratulations to Scott Rudin! Thanks to his stupid awards strategy he could only get 2 nominations. Harvey Weinstein, on the other hand…
Albert Brooks, at least the Globes succeeded where SAG failed!!
could not be happier with the best actress in a comedy or musical category.
Golden Globes are a complete joke! in 2011 not having The tree of Life and Drive in your list, somewhere, is being INCOMPETENT about what Cinema is and will be.
McCarthy snubbed =(
WTF, Globes? Rooney Mara? Are you fucking kidding me?
