- Boston, Los Angeles, And New York Critics Weigh In With Their Awards | We Got This Covered - [...] seen thus far. The Boston Society of Film Critics, The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and The New York ...

Breakthrough performance voting going on…
Breakthrough Performance goes to Jessica Chastain for SIX stellar performances. No brainer, eh?
Jessica Chastain wins Breakthrough Performance – and why not!!!
Oh, they seem quite adamant that the category is Breakthrough PERFORMER. Fits just as well.
Saw that one coming by a mile. My only other guess would’ve been Rooney Mara for TGWTDT if they wanted to give something for that movie. Hopefully it could get Best Music.
Ok, Jessica Chastain wins Breakthrough Performer…
Completle agree with New York – what concerns Jessica Chastain. Let’s see their next decisions…
well deserved win for Chastain…. brad pitt needs to beat clooney again boston chose him LA and NY need to follow suit!
Why not give supp. Actress to Jessica Chastain and get it done with???
Melissa McCarthy won for Bridesmaids!
Love the McCarthy wins today! Now can it get some screenplay recognition for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo…?
Melissa McCarthy could reserve her seats for the Oscars by this rate!!
Supporting actor votes…
Albert Brooks. I kind of hope LA goes for someone else just to mix things up.
YES! Albert Brooks again for Drive!
Brooks is cleaning up today
“Melissa McCarthy could reserve her seats for the Oscars by this rate!”
Is that a fat-joke?
Albert Brooks – oh yeah, he’s wiping the floor!!
At LAFCA, Christopher Plummer won Best Supporting Actor (possibly Brooks’ closest competitor)
how many of those has Brooks cleaned up so far?
3 or 4?
I still think Brooks will win the gold because Drive is also getting noms for other categories like Best Picture and Director as well. Not to mention it won earlier today for Music. That increases its chances whereas Beginners only has Christopher Plummer and not much other back up except the Independent Spirit Awards and Gothom Awards. I’m for Drive though I do wish the best of luck for Plummer as well. He should’ve been nominated 12 years ago for The Insider.
So glad Albert brooks is doing so well and happy for Jessica!
@Tero Heikkinen: It was only after I submitted the comment did I realise what I had typed…
According to Katey Rich, Chastain was the overwhelming favorite for Breakthrough, but caused a major split for Supp Actress. Mulligan was the close second for Shame. Interesting.
Brooks is on a roll!
He would be a sure-winner for Oscar if he used his real name – Albert Einstein
BEST SCREENPLAY – ALEXANDER PAYNE, NAT FAXON, JIM RASH for The Descendant
@Tero Heikkinen: I was astounded when I came to know that his real surname is Einstein!!!
‘The Descendants’ won Best Screenplay. ‘Moneyball’ won at Boston!!
Melissa McCarthy’s win isn’t listed on here…
And the Tree of Life won Cinematography. Again, Scott fails.
The Tree of Life wins Best Cinematography…Scott, where are you??
Who is really runner-up in best screenplay?
Cinematography is the only category that is a bit boring, cause one movie will win everything all the way to the Oscars. But yeah, a truly worthy winner.
We’ve had more predictable years. If 2011 is predictable only in one category, it’s a good thing.
i think fassbender will win the oscar
but i am very surprised
that he is not winning the critics awards
they are always the ones
who recognise the brave anti hollywood performances
This is nuts! I don’t know how Ryan is keeping up.
Best Use of Music – The Artist…
Jessica Chastain, the Jude Law of 2011.
what about Stellan Skarsgard ???
he will be twice as scary in dragon tattoo
as albert brooks was in drive
I doubt that Gerard.
BEST DIRECTOR – MICHEL HAZANAVICIUS for The Artist
They said it was a tie for Director and then they only put one?
I saw that, too.
Melissa McCarthy!!!
Melissa? That’s a weird tie for Director.
Are they not awarding Foreign Language Films at all?
What’s up with this Melissa girl winning these awards????
Michel Hazanavicious Best Director
Melissa the one to watch for Oscar!!! She was fab and truly stole the show!!!!! Just give her the Oscar now!!!
THIRD round of voting for Actress
CLose Vote but winner is MERYL!
MERYL!
BEST ACTRESS – MERYL STREEP for “The Iron Lady” (on a close third round vote)
Viola Davis is the Runner Up for The Help. Looks like a 3 way race to Oscar between Meryl Michelle and Viola.
Davis runner up
Go Meryl! School them childrens!
THIRD round of voting for Best Actor
Surprising finalists? Oooooo…….
Holy Shit – Michael Shannon!
Best Actor: Michael Shannon for Take Shelter!
This Melissa thing is a joke and a rather sad joke at that. Jessica Chastain gets a breaththrough award for some incredible performances and Melissa Mc Carthy wins BSA. And my complaint isn’t about Ms. McCarthy I’ve seen her on a few talk shows and actually liked her persona but to have her given this award by these various critics groups and shutting out really damn good performances makes me just shake my head. Hell as much as I hated Tree of Life I would have given Jesscia Chastain the supporting actress award over Mc Carthy any day. And no where is Octavia Spencer to be seen. Something just isn’t right here and I don’t like what I’m actually thinking because I find that when people use that as an excuse it irritates me but boy it’s looking to me like it’s smelling really bad.
WOW
Fassbender and Oldman runnersup
Dammit. Gary almost made it.
Finally Shannon gets some love!
What a SURPRISE! Michael Shannon! But i don’t think this will much impact the race…actually i don’t think he will even be nominated…
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS MERYL!!! SNATCH THOSE WIGS GUUURL
ANOTHER round three vote – ensemble
bridesmaids
I dunno. I didn’t see it. But that ensemble surprises me. With all the huge dramatic casts. Interesting.
Man Bridesmaids beating Tinker Tailor for best ensemble is crazy.
The Artist
Best Picture: THE ARTIST
Really? We’re just gonna award the painfully obvious winner and just forget the documentaries, foreign films and animated features?
The gimmick silent movie wins again…it’s nothing but a gimmick, people.
Wait never mind, they’re gonna award the other categories as well. I guess they wanted to get the painfully obvious out of the way first and THEN go back to the suspense.
As one lot of New York Critics had already awarded Meryl it seems fairly obvious that problably the same New York Critics (but online) voted for her again at another ceremony – painting by numbers!!!!
nice to see that the Best Actor race isn’t a one guy shutout like its been every year since i can remember.
The Artist – The new Shakespeare in Love
K. Bowen:
NOW – with quality.
Michael Shannon, YES!!!!!!
I’m really bumped about the Keira Knightley snub this season. Her performance in A Dangerous Method is my favourite performance of the year. Sucks!
I’m happy about Meryl, but it was expected for her to emerge victorious at the New York circuit. Let’s see how well she fares throughout the rest of the country… I still think Michelle Williams has the edge over her.
Happy for Streep. NY seems to LOVE her.
Looks like the Oscars are wide open, in all categories.
I think whats happening with Take Shelter / Michael Shannon is that most critics missed it in the theaters, I had to fight to get Sony to send the screener to our group then they fell in love, thus why it ended up on our top 10 best picture list at the HFCS and Shannon got a nod. I think he could very likely get in at the Academy because they proved they liked him before in Rev. Road, and this is one of the most extrodinary performances of the entire 2011 year!
TINTIN!!!!!!!
I have to second what Nic V said about Melissa McCarthy. She is awesome of course, but BSA? Over any of Chastain’s performances? Or Octavia Spencer’s? It is a joke….it is as if they are just trying to get her the Oscar nom! While she was really funny and good, the performance is NOT great! This is… I love fat people, they are so funny! Sorry it’s true. Jane Lynch has been giving that same performance for years…Also….Bridesmaids for Ensemble? Really?
