  20. The Armie Hammer nod is kind of mind-boggling to me. I finally saw J. Edgar last night and his performance/character was one of the reasons I disliked the film as much as I did. Still, the lack of Albert Brooks doesn’t bother me in the slightest (although I’m sure I’m the only one who isn’t upset by his absence). He was perfectly fine in Drive, but I’ll never understand the buzz he receives for that role.

  22. SAG made some pretty interesting choices this year (happy to see Demian Bechir get some love), but I feel I shouldn’t take them too seriously this year. I still think the Oscars will get it right and nominate Fassbender and Brooks.

    - Redgrave takes out McTeer.
    - Von Sydow and Brooks take out Hill and Hammer.
    - Fassbender takes out Bishir. (unofortunatelly thing are looking bad for g. oldman).
    - Best Actress will be the same.

  29. The stream froze for me too.

The only things I’m happy about are Nick Nolte and Game of Thrones. I guess they just vote our of their butts. Because they must have given Michael C. Hall that nomination out of habit. This season of Dexter has been atrocious.

Maybe this is what happens in a weird year like this. I’m starting not to like it now.

  33. PLEASE let this just be a miss from this nominating committee. I really hope that Shame blitzes AMPAS with screeners or that those smarter voters nominate Fassbender and don’t make a huge mistake. What a…well, shame.

But YES, thrilled for Swinton! That’s terrific. She deserves it, and I was worried she’d be snubbed. Here’s hoping this carries over to the Oscars. I don’t mind Theron being omitted.

Ew…Hill? Why? Gross. What a complete waste of a nomination.

  37. what does the Academy has against HP8, I mean the Satellite Awards, Washingington D.C. Area Film Critics Association, New York Film Critics Online, Newy York FIlm Critics Circle Awards, Houston Film Critics Society, European Film Awards (which really confused me), Detroit FIlm Critics Society, Boston Society of FIlm Critics Award, San Diego Film Critics Society Awards, St. Louis Gateway FIlm Critics Association Awards.

The film set the record for fastest-selling pre-order DVD and Blu-ray on Amazon.com, just two days into the pre-order period, the highest grossing film of the year, broke alot of box office records not only in America but around the world, the most anticipated film of the year, the film received a score of 93 from professional critics at the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 received universal critical acclaim.

  39. They also left out the second daugher, newcomer Amara Miller, from The Descendants. As well as Nick Krause, who provides one of the film’s most critical moments. Why don’t they bother nominating the entire cast for films when it seems that they go out of their way to nominate everyone and their mother for the tv ensembles?

  40. The dual nominations for Glenn Cloose (Albert Nobbs and Damage) was to shut up the critics who are ignoring her in their nominations for Best Actress. Close with Meryl Street are of the best actresses of a generation who can still hang with all overcoming and competence performances, when today the film industry has not respect at all with actresses who have passed their fifties.

  42. there’s just one thing that confuses me, how come The Artist (I mean like Shame is well pleased by critics) but is more popular in France than it is in America, I mean when it was released in the US after Thanksgiving, in it’s opening weekend it only made $204,878 in Domestic Box Office (man even Shame beated them and only made $361,181, I mean according to hitflix.com “Those certainly aren’t blockbuster numbers but they do represent one of the strongest openings for an NC-17 rated film”) and $13,759,355 in the Foreign Box Office?!

  47. I just think that Nolte’s performance was one of the worst, most inconsistent performances of the year. Was he a recovering alcoholic, or wasn’t he? He seems fine, at least until he is yelled at ONE TIME, then he is an alcoholic again for about five minutes, and then is fine again. Yep. This is the most “realistic” performance ever.

  48. What worries me about this list that if the Actors didn’t go for Shame, Drive, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Coriolanus in ANY categories, then what does it say about the Oscar-chances ?

I guess the Weinsteins COMPLETELY abandoned Coriolanus in favor of The Artist, My Week with Marilyn, The Iron Lady, there is simply no other explanation how acting giant Vanessa Redgrave delivering one of the best performances this year, does NOT get a nomination FROM HER PEERS.

Even if Fassbender gets a GG-nod tomorrow, his BFCA-GG combo is only as good as Gosling last year and we all know how that one ended. Although Fassbender might sneak in thanks to the almost certain BAFTA-nod, maybe even win. Mulligan also needs the GG/BAFTA nods to stay in the race.

Could the strong Bridesmaids-showing indicate that the film might just get a bp-nod along with supporting actress and original screenplay ? I mean COME ON, the film got an Ensemble nod over Hugo, War Horse, Moneyball, Carnage, Harry Potter, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, My Week with Marilyn, Coriolanus, The Ides of March, Drive.

At this point, I have to assume that ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ were shut out due to the ridiculously late screenings, ones that were probably impossible to attend for the majority of SAG-voters.

Plus, is Shailene Woodley this year’s Andrew Garfield ? Newcomer in supposed bp-frontrunner, considered top5 up until SAG-nominations ?

Strange, there were whispers about Bichir’s unexpected industry support, but I would have never thought it could get him this far…especially over Fassbender and Oldman.

Although the list is strange, for now I can be only ridiculously happy for Glenn Close who now seems to be a solid top5 player !

  49. The J. Edgar nominations seem like such a waste in place of much, much better performances. Michael Shannon, Michael Fassbender, Gary Oldman…I’d have them at the top of my Actor list and would be able to bump a couple people in favor of any of them, but to see DiCaprio’s hammy performance get in over any of them is really a disappointment to me.

I don’t think they even bothered to watch Hugo, Tree of Life, Shame, Tinker Tailor, Young Adult, etc.

These nominations are a distraction. Perhaps the Golden Globes will be more helpful.

Don’t despair about Fassbender. Owen and Portman weren’t nominated for Golden Globes either.

McCarthy should get in now considering she has racked up critics awards, BFCA nom, as well as SAG nom. If she picks up GG nom for Bridesmaid (She’s likely to get nom for Mike/Molly as well), she should be a safe bet for an oscar nom.

I think – as unrealistic as it sounds considering the medicore reviews – the film might STILL pull a ‘Reader’…this new voting system prefers EXACTLY the Eastwood-type, whose film might not get a lot of No2s and No3s etc. BUT might just have the loyal fanbase in the Academy to pull off that crucial 5% No1…just think about it!

When (not if) nominated, there is going to be a massive swell and campaign for her to win. Just you watch in the coming weeks.

The Actor section is particularly baffling without Fassbender and Shannon. The Actress section is pretty much sealed. And I’m curious to know if they got screeners out for EL&IC – since it was so late showing for the critics, I doubt they managed to get screeners out in time for noms. EL&IC needs to gain momentum!

Yah, they nominated Kathy Bates, but she is a big-wig when it comes to SAG. Yah, they nominated Marion Cotillard but the men just want to f*** her. But the other three just were not good enough to get noticed, I guess, over a mere cameo by Brody (all three are Oscar winners, whereas the 3 snubbed are up-and-comers) Ah well, at least this help’s the films Oscar chances. It apparently is a much stronger contender than many people expected.

And they very clearly want to boost Christopher Plummer’s chances of winning the Oscar by getting rid of any formidable competition (Patton Oswalt, Max von Sydow, Albert Brooks…)

I always think of SAG voters as primarily lame mainstream American voters. So, films with wide distribution (Bridesmaids, J. Edgar, Moneyball) do well, while indies (Take Shelter, Shame) and “foreigners” (Redgrave, Oldman) and foreign material (Shakespeare, TTSS) are less valued. Basically, they are one step above the MTV movie awards.

Benicio del Toro WAS nominated AND awarded by the Screen Actors Guild, only in Lead and not Supporting…and he also won as part of the Ensemble of ‘Traffic’…Brooks didn’t get a nomination in either categories and his film also didn’t get the Ensemble-nod, let alone win. So the Del Toro-Brooks comparison is simply not accurate…especially because Del Toro’s film was huge with the Guilds (SAG ensemble victory, WGA win, DGA-nod) and the Academy (directing, writing, acting, editing WINS) and though ‘Drive’ still has a shot at sneaking into a few key categories, it will definitely NOT win any.

  118. I literally let out of small gasp when I saw Demian Bichir’s name is Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. So friggin’ well-deserved. I’m thrilled the actors are behind him by honouring him with a nomination. Also overjoyed with his Indie Spirit nom too. I knew that was gonna happen for sure.

By biggest surprises in terms of omissions from the nomination list:

Vanessa Redgrave – snubbed for “Coriolanus”
Albert Brooks – snubbed for “Drive”
Michael Fassbender – snubbed for “Shame”

However, I agree that Oscar nominations will look quite different from the SAG nominations. And that Redgrave, Brooks and Fassbender won’t be forgotten.

The one nomination I was REALLY praying and hoping for was for Olivia Colman for Best Performance by a Female Actor in Leading Role for “Tyrannosaur”. But it didn’t happen. What a shame : ( She deserves to be in the top 5 of any Best Actress nomination list this year. She quite astonishing in the the film.

Can’t wait to find out who snags a GG nom!

  126. @Antoinette….I’m sure when he was acting in front of the camera, it was realistic, especially for a recovering addict like Nolte. However, I was left completely confused by his character, so I probably blame that on the editing. It would have been nice to have seen a scene in which Nolte’s character is drinking behind everyone’s back. It just seemed that became this drunk blubbering mess way too quickly. There was no build-up. That scene of him drinking would have come a few scenes before the casino scene in which he is yelled at and retreats into a drunken stupor.

Either which way, I feel he has taken over von Sydow’s secondary old-timer slot, and could even win. IMHO, it would be comparable to Melissa Leo’s win last year. A career win for a veteran character actor. It doesn’t really matter if the character has a character arc, I guess.

Breaking Bad for best ensemble and Bryan Cranston. Best season of any show this year.

    What I don´t like:

  133. Sorry Kel, you saw a different movie than most of us. Nolte’s performance in Warrior is the stuff of great tragedy, and he’s been recognized for good reason. You keep saying you could not understand the character and it didn’t make sense to you, but there is nothing cyptic or poorly written about his character. The big scene where he falls off the wagon drunk comes LATE in the picture and is absolutely perfectly played by both him and Hardy. It is VERY CLEAR why he has slipped after 1000 days sober, trying so hard to fix the bonds with his son but being cruelly rejected time and time again. If you watch the scene in the casino with Hardy directly before Nolte gets drunk, you know EXACTLY why it happens.

Please stop perpetuating this nonsense that the character doesn’t make sense — it’s you who isn’t making sense, frankly.

  137. I about died when I saw Demian Bichir’s name. Barely heard of him and the movie and NEVER expected to be surprised by a name especially in the Best Actor category.

I don’t like the nominees myself. Good for Bridesmaids! It was one of the few movies, audience-pleasing comedy or critics-pleasing drama, that was actually a fulfilling movie experience. I wouldn’t be surprised if McCarthy still gets shut out (a la Mila Kunis – too TV). But I’m sure she’ll get the Globe nomination tomorrow, leaving her with at least 3 of the top 4 awards.

I still don’t understand why Redgrave is not showing up. Weinstein has completely focused his attention this season on My Week with Marilyn and The Artist. The Artist can win, but I don’t think Michelle or Kenneth will, no matter how hard he plugs them. Redgrave, meanwhile, could still be the Marcia Gay Harden in a very weak category. Unlikely, but I don’t like the SAG lineup here. Spencer was terrific but not given enough range; even more could be said for Chastain, who’s just getting nominated for popping up in every other movie this year, when her agent is the one who really deserves the award (sorry). Janet McTeer could happen, but I thought people hated Albert Nobbs, so I don’t know what to make of it. Bejo is probably getting nominated for every remaining award on the strength of her movie. Carey Mulligan would still be an interesting choice, but does she have a showy enough role or does she really just look good on paper? And if Woodley is really good, I think the strength of her movie will get her a nomination over someone else, but who knows. Hard to make comparisons, but no young actor seems to get an Oscar nomination in supporting for a widely seen movie without having been recognized by the SAG first (Steinfeld, Breslin, and the eventually not-nominated Dakota Fanning for I Am Sam come to mind).

If I were voting on the nominees, I’d probably give it to McCarthy. Some of you are saying there was no skill involved in her performance, but I’m not seeing an Aileen Wuornos or Katharine Hepburn or Bob Dylan in the lineup. She’s a scene-stealer, which always counts for something; she’s not really playing herself; and she’s funny, and good comedy is hard to accomplish. I’m sure she won’t win, though, so this is why I encourage the Academy to nominate Redgrave because this weak category NEEDS it! This is the Oscars, not the Emmys for Best Supporting Actress in a TV-Movie or Miniseries.

  138. - I believe that Vanessa Redgrave will benefit from the Weinstein’s aggressive promotion of the film as well as her recent Academy tribute (given her ardent supporters and followers including Best Actress contender Meryl Streep). “Albert Nobbs” co-star Janet McTeer (who was nominated for Best Actress in 2000 for “Tumbleweeds”) will also receive goodwill nods for her pivotal role and impressive credentials as a stage actress. (She even showed up with Glenn Close last month at the Honorary Oscars show, a sort of subtle campaigning for the critically disliked film).

    - I also think that Armie Hammer will be replaced by 1988 Best Sup. Actor nominee Albert Brooks for “Drive”.

    - As for Fassbender’s Oscar chances, there is room for hope despite the support for Damian Bechir in the indie drama “A Better Life”. If “Shame” continues to receive massive critical backlash in the US (and as super-conservative Academy voters join the bandwagon), it’s “good bye Fassy” already. (There’ll be other chances in the future.)

  147. I was horribly unimpressed with these nominations. Did the actors actually WATCH all their screeners?

Supporting Actor: I think this is the category where we will see some MAJOR surprised come Oscar time, because I simply cannot fathom that Jonah Hill and Armie Hammer are locks for Oscar nominations. But this is looking like Christopher Plummer’s to lose and I’m fine with that since I loved his performances and loved the film.

Supporting Actress: I think Bejo, Spencer, and probably Chastain are locks. Still think Woodley could make it and hopefully Redgrave and Mulligan. I think the category will be really weak without the inclusion of the latter two.

Actor: Clooney, Pitt, and Dujardin are locks. Still think DiCaprio is vulnerable and am hoping the Academy will come to its senses and nominate Fassbender. Could see Oldman making it IF the Brits come to his rescue.

Actress: Streep-Williams-Davis-Swinton are in. I’m still not sold on Close and think either Theron or Mara (or maybe Olsen, though doubtful) could take her place.

There is respect for Close and moreso actors know actors and their backgrounds . And she will win based on the history and dedication behind Albert nobbs. But it’s really the story of two women, best friends, growing up and coming to terms with life changes, disappointments in both friendship, careers, love, etc.

  170. Corey Stoll, ALison Pill, Tom Hiddleston, etc. ARE included in the Ensemble. It’s just the way they type these things out. You’re sure to see them at the SAG awards themselves at the MIP table, and also you can be sure that WOODY won’t be there to accept, if they win. He never does come to any of these events, historically.

My biggest shock is NO WAR HORSE. This is from the Actors themselves. I think that officially scotches the “War Horse” chance of winning. Sure the horse is the star, but…this is definitively what the ACTORS think of it. No great performances. And that lead kid is cute, but the horse is cuter.

And I could be wrong about this, but the Screen Actor’s Guild is BASCIALLY an American actors union and therefore the large British voting block in the Academy is not reproduced here. So we can pretty well be assured that Redgrave and perhaps Oldman, too, will turn up on the AMPAS lists, as they surely will on the Golden Golbs.

But NO love for TGWTDT and ELAIC is V. bad. Late screeners, late screenings and EVERYBODY got the Demian Bechir screener EARLY BTW.

Although I haven’t seen all of the worthy films just yet, I was surprised not see Michael Fassbender or Charlize Theron or Kristen Dunst listed. Either not enough SAG members have seen their films, or the acting competition is extremely tough this time around. Still, today’s announcement does give a glimpse in how the Oscar nominations may turn out next month.

  179. To be honest. I couldn’t bear more than 15 minutes of Bridesmaid. I thought it was horrific, extremely bad.

Harry Potter is officially out of Best Picture, now. No SAG ensemble, no love from the acting branch, so they can kiss their asses goodbye in this race. If I was WB I would bet everything now on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, it could end making a Million Dollar Baby (Picture, Director, Supp. Actor (von Sydow)/Supp. Actress (Bullock) and Adapted Screenplay. I’d go the von Sydow route.

They did back in July (ie “Oscar attention needs to be paid!”) but for whatever reason it’s lost favor. I still think if WB was serious about getting the finale recognized they should have released it in November, then it’d be getting just as much attention as Hugo and the others.

I really hope you’re right about Brooks, but right now I see him getting snubbed at tomorrow’s GG noms and pulling a William Hurt for a “A History of Violence” kinda nod at best. “Drive” might have gotten some attention of the critics but I don’t see it getting anywhere beyond one acting recodnition (also maybe cinematography) when it comes to the “big” awards. Most of the SAG voters are going to vote the same at the AMPAS and if Brooks was going to get some serious support it would have started over here. We might just get over it, Plummer is going to get the Oscar and that’s a terrific thing, but I still hoped it would be a fight to the end and I certainly didn’t see it ending so quickly. Congratulations to Mr Plummer.

When it comes to “Bridesmaids” I wouldn’t worry so much about the recodnition the movie got with the SAG. I mean this is the crowd that nominated “Hustle & Flow” and “Hairspray” for best ensemble. The only reason this movie is getting some traction (and was even made for that matter) is that “The Hangover” scored big time a couple of years ago and they just made a female version. McCarthy hopefully won’t be showing up at the Oscars as a nominee. She’s far worse than … let’s say Marisa Tomei in “My Cousin Vinny” to pull off a surprise win. Right now she’s getting the positive buzz recoil form her Emmy wim, but I’m pretty sure it will end here or tomorrow at the Globes (they like to nominate comedic performances – Travolta “Hairspray”, Ferrell “Producers” or Cruise “Tropic Thunder”). Mulligan, Redgrave and Woodley still have good chances of getting nominated for the big award and I wish them all all the best.

As for the genre bias thing…well first of all I don’t consider comedies a “genre film”. If you’re gonna go route then you can call just about anything and everything a genre film, lol since drama, romance, war, etc are all genres. Anyways, in most cases rightfully that they have “genre bias” (if that’s what you want to call it) when it comes to comedy cause with a few exceptions they don’t make comedies worthy of recognition like they used to.

Potter on the hand is a genre film (in the usual defining of a genre film…though I would argue HP transcends any genre labeling combining elements of almost any genre you can think of) more then worthy /rant

  216. Well, to be honest, the lack of Brit films and how films like Bridesmaids and The Help jump over them, has a really simple answer which we may have understimated: this is the AMERICAN SAG.

The Artist gets in ’cause it features some prominent american actors as John Goodman and James Cromwell, both SAG members. But overall, the noms all together look like a joke, as Nat Rodgers has pointed out in his blog, with the horrendous absences of some members of the nominated ensembles.

“Any critic who called Bridesmaids a female version of The Hangover is lazy. Sure both revolve around weddings and R-rated humor, but one actually has intelligence and the other doesn’t. Guess which one has intelligence.”

Which one would that be? Just because one movie is less stupid and vulgar than the other doesn’t make it intelligent. Of course the two movies differ, mostly because of the fact that they are ment for different audiences. Despite there are a lot of men who enjoyed “Bridesmaids” and women who liked “The Hangover”, the first one is still a chick flick and the second a guy flick – simple as that. “The Hangover” is a fast paced and primitive “detective story”, “Bridesmaids” focuses more on emotions (as women do) and the narative is way different. But you can’t expect me to believe that taking a dump in the middle of the street and corny drunk/drugged acting on the airplane is intelligent. Same goes for Melissa McCarthy and her character. I guess the last viral-like shot of the movie sums up how much intelligence is there. I can only imagine the shitstorm of comments if Galifianakis would have been nominated for the SAG Award, the man would have been crucified for stealing the spot that belonged to Tucci, Harrelson, Plummer or whoever. And even though he is basically playing the male version of the McCarthy character, his acting skills are way better.
Call me lazy if you want, I don’t care, but please don’t feed me this crap about “Bridesmaids” being an intelligent movie. Let’s not mistake intelligent for enjoyable.

That year Tommy Lee Jones had “No Country for Old Men” on his side and was simply nominated for the wrong movie (same thing with DiCaprio and “Blood Diamond”). That logic actually gives Fassbender a bigger chance of scoring a nod, because he had a great year and I believ we’ll see him in the top 5. As for Oldman? Well, it has already been said that only the BAFTA can save him now. I personally wouldn’t mind Pitt or DiCaprio being snubbed if Gary could finally get nominated.

They may be young, but they were key to the film.

  229. Pleased with most nominations :-)

Happy for Leo, Armie, Christopher, Meryl, Glenn, Michelle, Viola, Octavia, Jessica and Brad.

Best Actor nominee George Clooney is well-overrated and his young co-star receiving acclaim did not do anything award-worthy in their film; I’m pleased that she was overlooked and the snobby Charlize Theron for Best Actress as well. Vanessa and Albert will make the Oscars final line-up, although Vanessa will not win, since they just had an honorary Oscar thing for her recently with Oprah and James Earl Jones.

Hope that Brad or Leo win Best Actor and Glenn or Viola win Best Actress. Michelle won’t win for Marilyn, since they didn’t recognize her for “Blue Valentine” last year, where she was great and Meryl just won the SAG for Doubt; they will want to spread the wealth. If Glenn wins for Damages, Viola will win Best Actress for “The Help”. If Glenn wins the SAG for “Albert Nobbs”…..the Oscar could be hers or may simply be a way to honor her (as they did recently for Meryl, Ruby Dee and Betty White) and thus, the Best Actress Oscar may go to Viola or Michelle. Tilda and Meryl already have Oscars….if this same line-up remains the same for Best Actress, which is usually 4/5 or 5/5 in most recent years.

I love Meryl, but if she lost to Sandra Bullock in her Made-for-TV-Movie/ 1970s role in the “Blind Side” and the Academy moved Kate Winslet to the Best Actress category for “The Reader,” if though she won a SAG and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for the role; this movie blocked Meryl winning a third Oscar for “Doubt”….not to mention their omission of her for Best Actress for “The Hours,” which I still believe was one of her best performances ever and would have won an Oscar for most actresses. With all due respect, but “Iron Lady” is another effort to recapture her glory days of accents and challenging roles; however, she chose the wrong director for her tour-de-force performance in an even more competitive year; Oscar goes to Glenn Close for a career of Oscar caliber performances and previous injustices (Fatal Attraction, The World According to Garp, Dangerous Liaisons, etc.) or the likely choice Michelle Williams: Weinstein Company behind her and in a likely Best Picture film….plus she’s been recently nominated on multiple occasions and she plays a babe. The male dominated/over-sexed driven voters will give her the Oscar over the more Oscar-worthy performance, Viola Davis !!! What a shame!!!!

    My Predictions for the Oscars:

    Best Actor: Brad Pitt, Moneyball
Best Actress: Viola Davis, The Help and Glenn Close, Albert Nobbs (possible tie–if they begin to sweep major critic awards); it’s time for another tie and this is the best category for it!!!
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Chastain, The Help

  230. My friends made a collective effort to boycott the awards race when the ludicrous Critics Choice nominations came out which was a reflection of the screwed up timing which created a mess with the nominees by being influenced with the picks from the early critic’s circle awards.

I have so many rants but I will just limit it to a few that apply to the Guilds and the outrageous mudslinging that came from a warped bandwagon effect.

However, some of the Guild choices have me breaking my stance for a moment because I need to speak out because I am outraged at alot of the commentary and backlash against deserving nominees.

Wow, just wow. I can’t believe the Critics Choice Nominations created such an intense bandwagon for certain nominees when just a month ago, people were saying that Brooks was overrated, was in the race due to the novely of his role, and he seemed like a out of left field pick for a weak supporting actor race. People are turning into such sheep where it is hip to support the actors who got early traction when some of the egregious snubs are making the cut with the Guilds.

I am shocked that Fassbender and Mulligan got snubbed. I doubt they will be snubbed by the Oscars because it seems likely that the Golden Globes’s and BAFTA’s will nominate them. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fassbender outed Leo.

I don’t get the controversy and hoopla over Brooks. He didn’t get this much support until he started picking up traction recently with the critics circle’s pick. I won’t get started on what I feel with Drive because people will attack me rabidly but what was so spectacular over Albert Brook’s performance that makes him suddenly uber-popular and more worthy than logical choices like Armie Hammer and Jonah Hill?!

Why take out the hate suddenly on Jonah Hill and Armie Hammer whose performances had been well-received and acclaimed when their movies were released?! I am also shocked at the sudden Leo backlash. I though J.Edgar had its share of supporters on this site. Now it is fashionable to act disgraced over J.Edgar being nominated when a lot of people didn’t agree with the weak reviews before.

Congratulations Leo. He gave a stellar, intense, and electrifying performance as J.Edgar. Armie Hammer also performed strongly as his level-headed and sensitive counterpart. I thought Armie Hammer gave a stunning performance that was much better than Albert Brook’s in Drive.
Now they are being blown off as hammy?! What the hell? I bet Brooks will make the cut due to the backlash and he will probably get Hammer excluded. People are acting like it is so horrible that Hammer got nominated when he gave a fine performance and Leo was at the top of his game. Hammer and Leo stand a good chance of being snubbed by the Academy due to the backlash and aggressive campaigning for Fassbender & Brooks, so I am happy that the actors who have sense, had the decency to give them some SAG recognition. Leo was exceptional but I can see him getting burned over Gosling or Fassbender over their “subtle” performances that required far less emoting and range.

Now people are just corralling around the so-called “edgy” picks that the haphazard early critic’s picks made suddenly popular.

I also cannot comprehend the sudden backlash against a worthy movie like Moneyball and its cast. Jonah Hill gave a striking, nuanced, and understated performance in Moneyball that was compelling and was a great counterpart to Pitt’s great performance. I thought Jonah Hill proved his dramatic chops and he got alot of early buzz so why are people disgusted with him being nominated?! I think I am just puzzled with the reactions of the blogosphere who turned into sheep after the early critic’s circle picks and BFCA nominations which I thought had a much weaker lineup. I am glad some other worthy candidates who got snubbed are making the cut.

  231. Evil me: Marie hates Drive! Attack her people! How dare she hate my favorite film of the year, possibly of all time. Albert Brooks was intense enough to make The Joker and Hans Landa seem less scary. The SAGs are just a bunch of FAGs.

Not evil me: Sorry. Just had to get that out. But yeah, Drive is awesome and you’re not so far.

  232. I had to re-type this sentence: I can’t believe the Critics Choice Nominations created such an intense bandwagon for certain nominees when just a month ago, people were saying that Brooks was overrated, was in the race due to the novelty of his role, and he seemed like a out of left field pick for a weak supporting actor race. People are turning into such sheep where it is hip to support the actors who got early traction when some of the egregious snubs are making the cut with the Guilds.

I felt J.Edgar, The Dangerous Method, Albert Nobbs, Moneyball, and Tree of Life had much stronger and more complex acting than Drive, The Descendants, and The Artist. Shame is also starting to become seriously overrated for me by people acting like Fassy gave the performance of a lifetime and going as far as to say that it is the best peformance in 2011. Whatever, how can that possibly ring true? I am tired of people claiming that Pitt or Moneyball needs to suffer at the expense of Fassy or Oldman. I know Moneyball and Tree of Life had plenty of support on this site. Where did all of those people go? Now everybody is gathering behind The Artist, The Descendants, and Drive, and certain other acting nominees that I didn’t think were particularly amazing.

Corey Stoll also seemed like an early out of left field pick for the potentially weak supporting actor race and now people are outraged that he got snubbed? What was so great about his performance that made him get more attention than the lead? Before the Independent Spirit Awards nominations, he wasn’t being mentioned at all and for good reason. Though he should have been included in the ensemble list for Midnight in Paris.

Armie Hammer and Jonah Hill have made the supporting actor race much stronger. Both of them were great in their roles and now suddenly it is popular to hate them and act like they are undeserving. The backlash just blows with the wind.

I can’t believe people are suddenly behaving as if Leo or Glenn Close is undeserving. Before, everybody was shocked that Glenn Close got snubbed and now that she is back in the race, she is the object of extreme backlash. She deserved to make the cut and also gave a subtle performance that I felt was radiant. People mock her as a body of work nod but then they demand that Gary Oldman be nominated which is hypocritical.

Have most of these people seen Tinker Tailor Solider Spy? Gary Oldman’s performance was standard and workman-like. It was solid but not impressive. I thought Leo, Fassy, and Pitt gave much more passionate performances. Don’t get me started on Gosling in Drive, or Clooney, and Dujardin but two of the latter are locks in the race. Gary Oldman is an amazing thespian who should have been nominated for many past roles. People are mentioning him because he is overdue and it is similar with Glenn Close. However, I thought Close stood out more as a viable contender when compared with her competition. I would be pleased if Oldman got the nom but not offended if he got snubbed because some of the other nominees produced more significant work this year. He will probably get the BAFTA nomination, a Globe nom is not a stretch, and he might knock out somebody for the Oscar, but I don’t find it fundamental to the awards race at all.

Also, I am surprised at the sudden overdrive of support for Vanessa Redgrave. They mock Close’s nomination but they think it is criminal that Redgrave got snubbed? I also wouldn’t be surprised if she made the Oscar cut if the BAFTA’s gave her love but again I can’t fathom the bandwagon that has suddenly developed on blogs for her.

I don’t find The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, or Drive to be striking choices but they are hip now. Certain nominees have become pariahs unfairly while actors like Brooks are suddenly deemed as must-have contenders with it being disgraceful if they are snubbed. I just don’t get it and it amazing how the zeitgesit turns into an epidemic.

I actually find some of the Guild nominations to be a slight improvement over the Critics Choice Awards and I am glad that SAG deviated from some of the humdrum picks from the early critics circle awards. Though I expect Fassy, Mulligan, Brooks, and possibly Redgrave to make the Academy cut due to Golden Globes or BAFTA’s support.

TOL and Moneyball are getting the shaft and will probably only receive some cursory Academy nods. I am surprised by the lack of nominations. I personally would have had Jessica Chastain nominated for Tree of Life or even Take Shelter, The Debt, or The Texas Killing Fields over her role in The Help. I hate to admit it, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is just screwed. It doesn’t deserve to be rejected but it ran a late ( and very expensive marketing campaign but they didn’t have the cast schoomze enough in time). The BAFTA’s will give it some recognition, I hope. At this rate, it is just likely that it might just receive techncial nominations which I find ridiculous. It might not even win most of those because so far it seems the award boards might give those technical nods to Rise of the Planet of the Apes or Hugo instead.

I really thought War Horse would emerge as a top contender but it isn’t anymore. Carnage and The Dangerous Method seem to be practically shut out so far. It is bizarre because earlier I had really thought that Viggo and Pitt would be duking it out in the BSA category. They both gave their career-best performances but they got thrown over by the early critics picks which created a movement for Brooks-Plummer which seems to have swept up most bloggers. Mia and Kirsten are probably not going to get in. Elizabeth Olsen is in the bubble but probably won’t get in. I don’t get the hype over Charlize either.

A lot of my worst fears that were created due to the awards race timeline of nominations irrationally being pushed back were confirmed but some actors are making a comeback with the Guilds and I am pleased for them. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and In the Land of Blood & Honey suffered greatly due to the timing. It is a shame because if the nominations were announced at the end of Dec or early Jan, I know they would have emerged as major contenders but they didn’t have the time to build up a solid campaign with their releases ( which back in the day would not be considered too late).

I still the awards race is a disaster but it has the chance to redeem itself.

  233. Give me a break. I am not going to deal with personal antagonism over a movie like Drive. I even spared my intense review of that movie here. I thought Cranston was better than Brooks in that movie. Gosling and Mulligan were bland in that movie which had a weak storyline but I guess that is what passes for modern “high-art” these days. Please refrain from dropping the F-word, don’t act like Brett Ratner. Drive is the “it movie” and it was ordained as cool and prestigious by the film community so I won’t even enter that debate here. You know the Academy is not going to snub Brooks because now it suddenly “in” to adore him and people placed their bets on him after the early critics picks. I personally thought Heath Ledgar and even Jackie Weaver were more intense but I guess different strokes…

I meant to say that I still think that the awards race is a disaster but that it has the chance to redeem itself. I found Armie Hammer, Jonah Hill, Viggo Mortensen, and Ben Kingsley to be more worthy. Guess I can’t be awesome to you.

  234. My prediction for the SAG Winners ( This is NOT what I want at all!)

    1. Best Actor: George Clooney ( Yawn). Backup choice: Jean Dujardin
    2. Best Actress: Queen Meryl. Backup choice: Viola Davis
    3. BSA: Christopher Plummer
    4. BSA: Berenice or Octavia.
    5. Ensemble: The Descendants or The Help. ( Crikey).

It will probably be predictable for most of the race except Fassy, Mulligan, and Tilda might win at the BAFTA’s which might cause one upset at the Oscars. I am not a fan of his overhyped performance, but I can easily see Brooks being a surprise upset over the front-runner Plummer.

  235. Oh I loved Jonah Hill and Ben Kingsley, they’re definitely award worthy all right. But they’re still garbage COMPARED to Albert Brooks and Bryan Cranston. Since Bryan Cranston isn’t in the race, my hopes go out to Brooks. Drive is as best as a movie could get for the year 2011 because it had a great screenplay with real characters that aren’t cliche played by great actors. It had flawless direction with the 2nd best looking cinematography of this year (1st being Tree of Life), and the editing was smooth and didn’t jump around like a Michael Bay film. The film did absolutely no wrong. It adapted a brilliant story in the most stylistic manner. Not every film should be made like this, but there’s plenty to learn from a genius like Nicholas Winding Refn.

  236. I agree with Marie in many bits of the lengthy “rant”.

I believe that Brooks will not be nominated for Oscar (for reasons I just typed elsewehere). He has not been on my predictions since September, no reason to bring him back in just because of critics.

    I love Drive.
