Saying Harry Potter was just for entertainment and therefore shouldn’t be recognized completely negates practically every other contender with the exception of perhaps TREE OF LIFE and MELANCHOLIA which are more artistic statements…
Entertainment Weekly also just came out with their BEST AND WORST… and HP7 was No. 1, followed by Drive, No. 3 Moneyball… the Descendents was 13 or something, the Artist also rather low.
Never, in the last decade or so, has a film been so acclaimed by critics, yet so ignored by the awards season – and that’s just fact.
And this isn’t coming from a Harry Potter fan or anything, but the film is easily a top 3 film of the year on ever respect: production, art direction, Wagnerian elements, meaningful score, well-rounded cast, ACTUALLY quality script, and a sense of completeness un-achieved by the other films in the series (and that’s not just because of the fact they still had more plot to develop in later films). The cinematography, the visuals, the evetything.
I’m not bitching about HP not getting recognized, but to say to get over it or that it wasn’t quality film is just petty, low-minded, and sad. I mean, what do you think SUPER 8 was? It was wonderful and expertly made, but it was just quality filmmaking and great entertainment!
I don’t believe in career awards so it shouldn’t be nominated for it’s significance as the final film in a revolutionary series, but this individual film should be recognized by this season.
But i mean, the same can be said for animated films.. WALL-E was arguably the best film of 2008, yet it will NEVER win best picture because actors make up most of the votes – Actors will never recognize a film that’s not acting heavy, with few exceptions: Slumdog Millionaire, LOTR: RTK.
It’s not being whiny when HP7 isn’t nominated, when based on film-quality criteria, it practically sweeps the board yearly.
Many just think the idea of a harry potter movie being best picture worthy is preposterous… so you’re all welcome to shut up about slamming it, thank you.
Central Ohio as opposed to what? Fringe Ohio? Critics from Ohio’s big cities Toledo, Cleveland and Cincinnati are not part of this group? Just asking.
then how could you explain Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, and Win Win?
Julia wrote – They have six Best Actress nominees and nominated TGWTDT in every eligible category and Rooney Mara is still nowhere to be found? Interesting.
Even more interesting that Tilda Swinton never made their list of six too!! Did Central Ohio not get to see WNTTAK???? Perhaps screenings were only allowed in Outer Ohio??? LOL
@The Great Dane old news since July?
henry, don’t give me that shit. There’s a bias when it comes to this. Period.
15 Best Picture nominees and no War Horse?
I was unimpressed with the final Potter film, but for once I have to agree. If you have FIFTEEN Best Picture nominees, you just can’t ignore it, based on the reviews it got. I guess it’s just old news now. Had they released it in November, as they did with some of the earlier Potter films, maybe it would have been a shoo-in now. Potter REALLY just feels like old news. Like 2010-old-news…
I’m thrilled that Source Code’s screenplay has finally gotten recognition!
They doesnt choose only dramas for the best picture category. Dont continue looking for excuses for comfort when you dont see harry potter in such category. There are better movies, only think about that. And the sceenplay had the same big mistakes, only with more visuals effects. The final had to do it better.
Distrit 9 got a nominations thanks a great story and well written. Avatar thanks to a innovative proposal, lord of the rings trilogy for being perfect in all the aspects, tzar wars and many other
Harry potter is not good enough for winning IMPORTANT awards, understand it. You should know the peoples choice, hollywood award , and the other ones, are not importants. That is the reality.
You are wishing the impossible, There are not any possiblities for getting a best icture nominatio, because This last movie was not a good final. It was just another otter movie. A fantasy with only 1 good moment, ad they used more vsula effects thiking that it was the only thing that they needed to go a good movie
Yes.
@Josh doesn’t the Academy always choose drama films as the winner for Best Picture? (not counting LOTR 3)
@Josh what about the BAFTA Brittannia Awards?
OCO, anything that’s voted by the public isn’t considered important. Only one you listed that has any weight to it is the Nation Board of Review.
Yes it is. Being a blockbuster doesn’t mean it’s quality is crap, which I suspect is your reason for that statement.
Harry Potter 7.2 is a great film, as it’s reviews and worldwide appeal proves. Why aren’t the ones who raved about it back in July not recognizing that, who knows? Maybe they are being pretentiously hypocritical.
Maybe it’s because the only way a fantasy film can be taken seriously is that if it’s quality is to a level where it can sweep awards without question, like ROTK. Which is unfair because dramas can get a pass, but not films like Potter.
@Henry what about Hollywood Movie of the Year, National Movie Awards, National Board of Reviews Awards, and the People Choice Awards
OCO300 you insult the academy awards for one reason: HARRY POTTER WONT BE NOMINATED TO BEST PICTURE. The critics awards, the sag awards, the golden globes awards ignoed to your favorite movie. And they have a good reason for doing it. Harry Potter is a good enterteining, nothing more. It was not a good enough movie for compite for important awards. That is it.
I don’t care how obscure this group is. They had the good taste to nominate M. Fassbender when SAG did not.
thank you, evelyn garver!
isn’t that the thing? doesn’t a group establish its credibility by its CHOICES and not by its location on the map?
The Central Ohio Critics have picked a great set of nominees.
It’s fairly infuriating to me to hear someone who’s supposedly a movielover to come here to sneer, to disparage a set of honorable movies and filmmakers.
thanks Josh
And I say it all the time, learn what the term ‘troll’ means. He’s not being a troll, he’s just offering up his opinion on the race. Hate it or not, he’s entitled to it, and it’s just as credible as yours.
“They gave it great reviews but they apparently consider it very good entertainment and nothing more.”
No.
@Lazarus read 2) and it’s not ruining my life Lazarini
@Josh I mean 1)
@Josh did you read 2) ?
Exactly. The Academy hates fantasy so much, it allowed The Return of the King to sweep all its categories inc. Best Picture (first win here for the third film in a series), tie a wins record, and this is coming after awarding the two previous films with six statues.
Don’t blame your whining on the Academy. They’re not going to give a fuck because the critics don’t either. They gave it great reviews but they apparently consider it very good entertainment and nothing more. The Lord of the Rings films succeeded on the awards circuits because those voting (a) had more respect for the source material and (b) believed the films to be greater artistic achievements.
Find something else to talk about. You’re a broken record, and if HP7 not getting awards accolades is ruining your life so much, you need to seriously consider psychiatric help. Even Sasha’s obsession with The Social Network/The King’s Speech doesn’t prevent her from writing intelligently and beautifully about other subjects.
Happy New Year, troll.
“…they will always pick drama over fantasy first”
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
@Lazarus
Ryan Adams, please forgive me for my language and what I’m about to say. We all know that the Oscars is a joke, the Academy will always pick drama over fantasy films. I got to say kid and fantasy films are way better then these sappy movies. Harry Potter is not going to win for one these old farts of the Oscars don’t care about the movie even though it was the best reviewed movie of 2011, they will always pick drama over fantasy first. The Muppets of course wasn’t mention, again a kid film. It’s funny that the Help is in the top 5 which they got a 76% on rotten tomatoes and Harry Potter has a well score of 96%. The Oscar members will just over look Harry Potter and other films that have a great scores then list that I see, but the Artist is a strong frontrunner to take the best picture gold.
I mean come on. It got better overall ratings than a lot of those movies. I dont care if it wasnt absolutely perfect, it gave off so much suspense and emotion making it overall so visually appealing. And if I must say I was a fan of the help novel but I found the movie rather similar to other movies already made dealing with the same universal theme. My top picks would be Harry potter war horse the descendants Hugo and the girl with the dragon tattoo . The academy can get to wrapped up on classic type movies sometimes and leave out ones that deserve a nomination. Which is also why the artist is nominated. I want to see it out of curiosity but it really is just redoing something that was already done.
1) HP:DH 2 is like Lord of the Rings, I mean think about it people’s reactions to changes in the films from the book. We all know what the best pictures of the years are and what movie gets the oscar. Personaly i thought all three the lord of the rings films deserved best picture but they waited for return of the king to award the whole body of work.
2) It was worst year for movies but maybe not for a few sequels.
Lazarus… Just ignore them
Jessica Chastain is responsible for a number of well received performances this year, but is any one of them the “BEST” performance of the year? It may be enough to win her the Oscar though, but I think it is going to depend of which film she’s up for. I think that if she gets in for The Help, she does not win, unless she’s the only supporting nomination from that film, if not, she splits the vote. If she’s up for anything else, she wins for her body of work.
Would be nice if only acting were the criteria. Unfortunately, it’s not, which is the reason we’re getting the people that these awards “Think” might be nominated, instead of the people who actually deserve to be nominated, based on simply brilliant acting. Look at the Actress list and not one of those listed is in the same class with Tilda Swinton as an actor, yet she’s not listed. Then there’s Olivia Coleman who may just have given the performance of the year and I’m absolutely shocked that she did not get precursor notice, which would have helped people stand up and take notice of her very small, underfunded film.
No A Separation for Best Foreign Film? Really?
Super 8 for Best Picture? Really? Yes, Harry Potter was much better. I also like that Win Win got a nomination
Oh I see Tinker Tailor… up for best Esemble finally !!!! Yay !
Ryan, what is it going to take to ban someone like OCO 300?
Are there any trolling rules here whatsoever? This person can’t go into a single article without mentioning Harry Potter, and it’s the same shit over and over again.
Do you and Sasha want this place turning more and more into an IMDB level of discourse?
@Paddy M- Disagree. I didn’t take to the performance and there wasn’t a moment where I believed either Close or McTeer could pass as men. That makes the entire film crumble. The screenplay is horrible and that lends itself to the performance- if an actor is reciting cringe-inducing lines and there is zero believability you have to place blame where it’s due- screenwriter (who Close shares credits on) and the performance itself. There wasn’t a moment in the film that I felt any of the actors (with a minor exception of McTeer in a few scenes) rose above the pure shittiness of the script and direction.
@OC 300- It comes down to one plain and simple point: they just don’t respect it. If any other film had all the accomplishments that DH2 has managed, it would be considered not only an Oscar-worthy film but most likely a front-runner. The Academy doesn’t respect it.
Holy shit, Central Ohio Film Critics is a real thing?
Are we seriously dividing states up into lattitudinal thirds just to disseminate a list to the general public of the best films of the year which closely mirror 916 other such lists?
If you’re making a living in the Columbus Metropolitan Area writing about films and educating your readership about such matters, god bless, but my god, get a life!
Are we seriously dividing states up into lattitudinal thirds just to disseminate a list
Orrin K,
or else let’s consider the possibility these are people who know each other, work together, share a common background.
like, you know, every other club, group, and academy in existence.
I don’t recall you telling the NYFCC to get a life.
hey, AMPAS, get a life.
Orrin K is sick of you disseminating your lists from Malibu and Bel Air every year.
@ The Horse in War Horse
I like that film. It’s not great, but I like it. It’s not about the film, though, it’s about the performance, which is extremely good.
Yay I’m glad Chastain was nominated for both her performances this year, although she was equally terrific in Take Shelter. Stoked that Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt were recognized. Where is Glenn Close? Oh that’s right- NO ONE likes that film! God, I wish the best actress category played out in similar fashion to these nominations… justice for Kiki!
@Paddy M. yeah I know
I mean i just don’t get it I mean HP:DH 2 is known as the best reviewed film of the yeah, it’s a global box office success, it got 93% on BFCA (that was marked Critic’s Choice, higher than any film this year), a 96% (based on 269 reviews) and 100% (among Top Critics)on Rotten Tomatoes, got an 87% on MetaCritic, ranked #1 in 4,375 theaters in it’s opening weekend; also set the record for fastest-selling pre-order DVD and Blu-ray on Amazon.com, just two days into the pre-order period; and it was released after Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, and Win Win.
Is it because it’s either a fantasy film, high grossing film, or it had $250 million in it’s budget(which is a miracle they still made $1,078,111,219).
The Jessica Chastain Awards then.
Hells yeah! Go Drive and Melancholia!
Central Ohio critics did an excellent job for nominating Brad Pitt for his better perfomance. He´s so much better in The Tree Of Life than in Moneyball.
I wish the Academy would consider that too. For me, it´s an oscar deserving supporting performance.
OCO, you have no idea what the Academy thinks about Deathly Hallows Part 2.
And Mark, Brad Pitt has been absent from a number of Best Actor lineups already. Many of those groups who leave him off their Best Actor lists, though, nominate him for The Tree of Life instead.
I’m most surprised that Rooney Mara isn’t nominated. Best Director and Adapted Screenplay nominations make it clear that this lot loves Dragon Tattoo more than most others seem to this year. With six Best Actress nominees, it’s a strange omission. I also wish Jeff Cronenweth would amass a few more nominations.
The have six Best Actress nominees and nominated TGWTDT in every eligible category and Rooney Mara is still nowhere to be found? Interesting.
Lol @ source code for screenplay.
I feel a TREE OF LIFE sweep. They’re smart for picking PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE in 2002
Whoa, no Pitt in actor?
Is it me or does the Academy/Film Critics Associations have something against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2?
For reals?
Did the Wyoming Western critics get lost in the e-mail?
hopefully jessica chastain wins for the help, and not tree of life!
