To Jason:
I have watched all that you listed and Michelle is better than everyone except potentially Tilda.
I like her as an actress but in My Week With Marilyn she was… average. There was absolutely nothing memorable about her performance. There are so many other deserving actresses that should take her spot, such as Olsen, Mara, even Dunst.
Such lovely speech, she’s a beautiful person. Here’s hoping there’ll be more occasions like this in the near future, I’m strongly rooting for her.
At the end of her speech she is talking about the director and thanking him for entrusting her with Marilyn’s soul, etc. – I believe she meant she is accepting the award on behalf of both her and the director, not on behalf of her and Marilyn.
I’m sorry, but this speech bored me out of my skull. I’m okay with this lady, but I’m so flipping the channel if she gets up at that podium and deliver another tedious, self-important speech like that.
I can see why would like it, but blah, I didn’t.
Ryan Gosling gave THE standout performance in Blue Valentine.
Mostly beautiful speech. Sounds like she’s been to finishing school like in the olden days. Given her Dawson Creek roots, glad she doesn’t sound like one of those ghastly valley girls.
Go Michelle, you deserve it. Beautiful and heartfelt speech.
*Oh there’s another Archie here* :). Viola Davis is the strongest performance out of all the actresses in The Help!
And she accepted on Marilyn’s behalf, too!
If she had done that I would have snatched her wig. I hope people don’t read that without watching the clip and think she actually had the audacity to pull a stunt like that. You should probably rephrase that. She mentioned Marilyn and how Marilyn was under the studio system. But if she had “accepted on Marilyn’s behalf” it would have been arrogant. This speech was thankfully much more polished than that.
Great humble speech. I never understand why people think Michelle is so serious, I think she is just extremely shy. Not everyone is going to be as outgoing and charming as Clooney, Meryl etc. Just because you dont juggle during your speech or do cartwheels on the red carpet doesn’t mean you are cold or icy.
I loved Michelle’s performance in MWWM and I liked the movie more than I think most did. I haven’t seen Iron Lady yet, but I thought she was better than Viola. JMO. She really should have won last year for Blue Valentine. Really Im just glad more people are getting to know and see Michelle. Win or lose she really is a terrific actress.
I think Weinstein sees securing Meryl another Oscar as his holy quest this year, but I’d love to see Williams on that podium accepting on Oscar night
Mira Sorvino didn’t WIN the Emmy for playing Marilyn.
But I think Williams will win. Although Davis will have BP at her back, Williams has Weinstein.
In Variety, Gregg Goldstein alludes to whomever wins the Desert Palm Award(Trophy? Honor?) has gone on to win the Oscar in the Best four, I think he said years. GO MICHELLE!
And again, WHAT a speech! And she accepted on Marilyn’s behalf, too! WOW! Smart cookie, that Michelle.
She was glowing. As she is in the film
Mira Sorvino also won an Emmy when SHE played Marilyn on TV. Marilyn is an awards magnet, and Hollywood was so awful to her in her lifetime. This will be the make-up Oscar(and MWWM will probably get nominated in that category, too.)for MM.
Thanks for the vids .Can we see the other acceptance speeches too ? Clooney Pitt Oldman Chastain …..:))) Please !!!
Everybody knows it will be only the first of many Oscars Michelle Williams is gonna win!
Despite what you think about my Week With Marilyn as a film the fact remains that Michelle Williams turned in a bravo complex and fearless performance that elevated the film to greater heights and it is indeed one of the best performances by any actor of the year and the fact can be argued that she is indeed one of the mot talented actress of her generation. Now for the speech portion I found her extremely humble, funny, and sincere and a great preview for what I hope is a line of many award speeches from her this awards seasons.
I hadn’t realized this was last night. Was anyone else there?
). I have to agree about Viola Davis – her performance could be deemed “supporting” under other circumstances, in a different year, etc. Emma Stone is the real leading actress in The Help and the rest are supporting. Knowing the Viola has better chances as lead, it also opens the door for campaigning other actresses as supporting – and in this case successfuly leading to 3 nominations. They were all great, don’t get me wrong. I am just observing the screen time etc. (not that I measured it, mind you).
Michelle Williams – being that she is the center of the film, that she opens and ends it and is in most scenes, it’s hard to call her role supporting, even if the story is indeed told from the point of view of the boy. (I find it similar to Kate Winslet in The Reader – if you recall, at first some awards she received were for supporting actress).
I wish Keira Knightley was campaigned as supporting for A Dangerous Method – she would have stronger chances.
But back to Viola Davis – the reason I believe she won’t win is because she is in what is clearly an ensemble while Meryl Streep, let’s say, carries the whole film (she is in every single scene). In that regard, I feel that Glenn Close is a bigger threat – that is IF she gets nominated. It will be her 6th nomination, and I am assuming her role is definitely a lead role and I assume that she is good in it. Though it’s interesting that she was left off the BFCA nominations. Why? Did they not have screenings? Does anyone know?
So to conclude, I do believe it’s Meryl’s to lose.
Jason, you don’t know what you’re talking about and your post is very confused. What are you trying to say, exactly?
The fact of the matter is that Michelle Williams gives what might be the lead performance of the year in the Best Actress category. It is remarkably complex, nuanced and inspired, and a lot of work went into it with no less than 4 coaches and much research. She nailed it, without question.
To say she is not good or in the caliber of other actresses (if that is what you are trying to say) is hogwash.
I hope academy will award her for amazing performance in My week with Marilyn!
Did someone actually just post that Michelle Williams gave a good “supporting” performance while, in the same sentence, mentioning Viola Davis’ work in “The Help” as lead??!!
Wow…just…wow wow wowwie!!
How touching it was to hear her speaking so respectfully of Marilyn. Especially when said she was excepting it on “both our behalf.” Very moving to this big Marilyn fan!
I really don’t think she’s gonna win the Oscar…i mean, i’m rooting for her, but as of now i have this gut feeling that it will be Meryl vs. Viola…
GG will be her consolation prize!
U ARE WATCHIN OUR NEXT BEST ACTRESS WINNER AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS!!
I hope she wins the Oscar!
Michelle, is such a classy, eloquent, intellingent, talented and beautiful actress. This should confirm that she is not the cold, inhibit person that some claim she is. There is no wander she has so many gifts!
I’m sorry to say ,but everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. Michelle is a brillllliant actress, but this performance is not goood. Brokeback…, Blue…. and Wendy were astonishing performances. Have you all seen Janet Mcteer ( Supporting Actress) , Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Meryl and Tilda’s Performances? And you all are telling me Michelle who gives a good “supporting” actress performance in Marilyn is being touted as best Actress of the year? Come on people like really!
such a beautiful woman!
right here, with this touching and sensitive speech, elegant haircut and dress she reminds me of Anna in “Birth”.
It came off a little too serious, but overall a good speech.
Wonderful speech. Humble and very touching and honest. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to spot her there.
Thanks for posting this. Michelle is lovely.
She has a lot of chances to win Oscar. Michelle is so talented and perspective actress!
…she might get a better shot at the Oscars.
(Sorry for the cut off comment above.)
Her speech was very good and touching. She is not as icy as some people claim her to be. Hope she gives more well prepare speeches. If she does well in the Globes.
WOW! Just WOW! Is that a winner’s speech or what? Thanks for posting this beautiful moment in the beautiful Michelle’s life.
