13th Annual No Guts, No Glory, 84th Oscar nomination Edition, Plus Oscar Wish
src=”http://www.awardsdaily.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/01/this-is-not-the-end.png” alt=”" width=”400″ />It was the year we thought War Horse and Tree of Life would dominate the Oscars. It was the year we never saw The Artist coming (until Cannes). It was the year The Help became one of the highest grossing films of the year — dragged controversy with it but has somehow overcame all of it. It was the year Bridesmaids and Dragon Tattoo surprised everyone by popping up in so many early guild awards. It was the year of the Meryl, and the actress she championed — “someone give her a movie” — Viola Davis. It was the year of the Clooney and several of the sexiest men alive. It was the year of the Gosling. Marilyn and Margaret Thatcher coming to tea? What ho, Brits hither and thither. And by most accounts, one of the least exciting Oscar races evah. But, as Iggy Pop would say, “it’ll all be over soon.” We should enjoy this moment, as hope springs eternal.
Please no more than three No Guts, No Glory and three Oscar wishes. Here are mine:
No Guts, No Glory
Ben Kingsley nominated for Supporting, making Hugo a major threat (could also be an Oscar wish)
War Horse surprises with Picture, Director, Screenplay, Editing, Cinematography nods
Demian Bichir is nominated for Best Actor
My Oscar wishes
I was told to never say your wishes out loud, so I will keep them dearly to my chest and hope that they come true.

@Greg Y. yeah I know Drive deserve and everybody (including movie or film critics) around the world knows Harry Poster’s last film deserves that top nomination, I mean why shouldn’t it it’s the hhighest grossing film of the year, made over a billion dollars (surprisingly), had possibly higher grades, more votes and reviews than any film this year, and has universal critical acclaim, also isn’t that hard to overlook/and doesn’t that kinda describe achievement in a film or sequels that’s part of the most popular and successful film franchise of all time. You know kinda like Star Wars, Avatar, and Lord of the Rings (I mean the battle scene between Voldemort/Potter reminded me of either LOTR or SW).

TRADITIONAL NGNG
1. BEST PICTURE : Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
2. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR : Ben Kingsley (Hugo)
3. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS : Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris)
(+1 – I wouldn’t underestimate ‘it’ girl, Emma Stone, either.)
NOT-SO-TRADITIONAL NGNG (trying to find some logic/pattern?)
1. THE BRITISH VOTE
The British Vote secures key nominations for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (Picture) , Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Steve Kloves) and Shame (Fassbender, Mulligan). I still wouldn’t be surprised if Deathly Hallows landed a bp-nod, it needs 5% No1 – the precursors used different voting systems – so I think the stunning ensemble (some votes from the Actors’s Branch), the British-factor (some No1 votes from the British members) and the visual extravaganza (lot of No1 votes from technical branches) might just be enough to cover that crucial 5% No1.
2. THE POWER OF A BP-NOMINATION
A few strong best picture contenders will pull off completely unexpected acting nominations, so Emma Stone (lead), Marion Cotillard (supporting) and Ben Kingsley (supporting) will all land nods despite the complete lack of precursor-love. In case a film is more loved than we thought and surprises in the bp-category (see # 3), then acting contenders from those films could shock, too (Patton Oswalt, Judi Dench, Sandra Bullock, Max von Sydow). Oh, and if The Tree of Life sneaks into best picture, I wouldn’t be at all surprised, if Jessica Chastain AND Brad Pitt received their nominations for the Malick-film, too. Either double nomination for Pitt OR his lead nod would be for The Tree of Life.
3. THE POWER OF THE NEW RULE
At least one at-the-moment-underestimated film from an Academy-darling director WILL land key nominations including best picture. The best bet seems to be The Ides of March, but I wouldn’t rule out Young Adult, J. Edgar, The Tree of Life, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, either. Reitman is 3/2, Daldry is 3/3 and are we really that sure that there aren’t passionate fanbases in the Academy that could secure the 5% for Eastwood and/or Malick ? Sure, there probably wouldn’t be enough No2s and 3s etc. that would have been required last year, but are we REALLY that sure, that there won’t be 5% No1 ?
NO GUTS NO GLORY !!!
Best Actor/WOODY HARRELSON, RAMPART
Best Director/NICOLAS WINDING REFN, DRIVE
Best Picture/A SEPARATION
NGNG

how is Bichir a NGNG? he got a SAG nom….
Sasha, I got so excited about your annual No Guts/No Glory column that I forgot to limit my list to three (I didn’t read the article, but dove right in to participate).
I apologize to you and your readers.
@phantom
I wouldn’t call Terrence Malick an Academy-darling. Only one film got any real attention, although it was big one – as I recall, zero Globe nominations and seven Oscar nods. If I understand the rules well, Tree of Life should be nominated because it has many ignorers, but also many lovers – more than most of the movies that you just like ’cause they’re just good. Which is why Reitman and Eastwood probably don’t stand a chance. Daldry really is a darling, but all his previous movies were, well, in contention. They had big presence on Globes and BAFTA. Extremely Loud seems to be totally ingored, I can’t see it nominated.
My NGNG? Well, it’s hard to think of any surprises possible this year…
- A Separation for screenplay
- Terrence Malick for director
- Gainsbourg for makeup? It that guts? Or maybe Tinker Tailor for screenplay.

I still maintain that this is not one of the least exciting Oscar races ever. It’s one of the most exciting in years, easily. Best Picture isn’t the only category – almost every other major category’s fate has yet to be sealed.
NGNG:

Beginners for Original Screenplay
Midnight in Paris receives multiple tech nods (Art Direction, Costume Design)
Wishes
Drive for Picture/Refn for Director
Moneyball for Sound Mixing
Any nominations for The Muppets outside of Original Song (since that one’s a given)
For people to stop calling A Separation for Original Screenplay a NGNG pick–it’s either a first alternate or predicted nominee on just about any prognosticator’s predictions, and it’s probably gonna happen. Be bold, I say.
I don’t care if The Artist wins Best Picture (the majority of the general public, who will never attempt to see it, might feel differently but whatever). I just wish that it doesn’t wind up getting nominations (or ultimately wins) that it doesn’t deserve. Weinstein is controlling AMPAS like his own personal marionette; I just hope that his campaigning doesn’t get people to blindly vote for things like cinematography, screenplay, and even director which could easily go to more deserving candidates (Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris & Hugo, respectively). Picture and Score? That’s fine though an upset in even those would be fine by me.
NGNG
Leonardo DiCaprio is NOT nominated for J. Edgar.
Both Fassbender and Shannon are nominated.

NGNG (and I HONESTLY think all three will come true):
1. Armie Hammer (J. Edgar): Best Supporting Actor (I think he takes Nick Nolte OR Jonah Hill’s spot…Albert Brooks makes the cut…this is a hard category to predict with a lot of competition, but I think the Academy likes Hammer)
2. Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive): Best Director (he’ll take the ‘Speilberg/Fincher/Malick’ spot everyone’s assuming…the only reason Malick won’t get in is because he won’t show up to the ceremony)
3. Carey Mulligan (Shame): Best Supporting Actress (she’ll take the ‘McTeer/McCarthy’ spot everyone’s predicting…I think Woodley’s safe)
No Guts No Glory
Supporting Actor Robert Forster for The Decsendants

My ONLY and MOST FERVENT wish for tomorrow is for Michael Fassbender’s name to be read as a Best Actor nominee for “Shame” (I don’t think it’s a lock). If he doesn’t make it, anger will not begin to describe how I will feel.

Shannon Best Actor (Take Shelter)

It would be great if Viola Davis got a supporting nom instead of a lead nom. That would settle things a bit but I don’t expect it to happen.
My predix covered in my link

1) Carey Mulligan for Supporting (Shame, not Drive)

Vanessa Redgrave and Carey Mulligan in Supporting Actress
It was the year we thought War Horse and Tree of Life would dominate the Oscars.
And it was the year of the Potter finale, with dominating reviews and box office.
Ebert has Tree of Life in his 7 Best Picture selections. I’ve always figured his uncanny accuracy is based less on intuition than a source who is in the know. So I’m hopeful.
NGNG:
Shame (Best Picture)
Fassbender (Best Actor)
Corey Stoll (Best Supporting)

All highly unlikely, but it’d make my month!
Chastain for Take Shelter
Patton Oswalt for Supporting Actor
Elizabteh Olsen for Actress
Sasha, I think you’re dead right about Ben Kingsley for Hugo. I’m currently predicting him too; it seems like the perfect “coattail” nomination. He’s a popular, Oscar-winning, respected actor in a film that is destined to do very well with the Academy and due to the sheer instability of the supporting actor category, I think he can make it.
Other NGNG picks (and these I’m actually predicting):
1) Kirsten Dunst upsets Glenn Close for the fifth best actress slot.
2) Carey Mulligan, best supporting actress for Shame (knocks out Melissa McCarthy).
3) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fails to receive picture, director, actress, and screenplay nods (I know this notion will be unpopular, but I don’t think this film will do as well as people are expecting).
NGNG

Dear Readers of AwardsDaily,
Calling Bridesmaids a NGNG pick for Best Picture isn’t real. It’s clearly in the running and would have absolutely be in the category had they not changed the rules.
Sincerely,
Someone with a real NGNG pick for Best Picture: The Artist!
But really:
Best Picture: Take Shelter

Michelle Yeoh – The Lady
Keira Knightley – A Dangerous Method

. . . and the only one of those 10 artists who I think has a chance and my Oscar Wish for tomorrow: Michael Shannon in Take Shelter
His performance was riveting – total control of that character – and I can’t imagine another actor doing what he did in the role.
I’ve always felt that acting Oscars should go to something “special”. The right actor in the right role at the right time. For me this year, that was Michael Shannon in “Take Shelter”. It reminded me of the ferocity of Peter Finch in “Network”. For those of you who have not seen it, have I enticed you a little to check it out?
Keifer
for those that need a reminder:
“I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV’s while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be. We know things are bad – worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’ Well, I’m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot – I don’t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad. You’ve got to say, ‘I’m a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!’ So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, ‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: “I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!”
Some of the most brilliant fucking dialog ever written, delivered to perfection.

This years Oscar season needs Kingsley to be nominated in a big way. Scorcese to be nominated too. That may be the only way we actually have a race for Best Picture this year…..
Except maybe if The Descendants suprises at the SAG and gets nods for Woodley and Editing(plus the probable WGA win)
Those are the only ways I can imagine this Best Picture race staying interesting.
Imagine if all this somehow happens! That would be so exciting (even though I don’t like the Descendants I would still enjoy this just for tension sake)
