Way cool! Some extremely valid points! I appreciate you
penning this article and also the rest of the
website is very good.
you are wrong hunter. But you wont realize of what I said it is true, because it would hurt you.
I am right, and if you dont face that the final of the saga is a failed movie. Okay. Thanks to awards for not overreating it like the fans did. It is a pitty to think that they formed with a terrible final.
I don’t like this year’s BAFTA. I know, BAFTAS are usually different from the other awards, but this year’s BAFTA really disappointed me: No THE TREE OF LIFE for Best Cinematography, NO NOMINATION FOR WOODY ALLEN (AS DIRECTOR), OR ALEXANDER PAYNE!! And Lynne Ramsay for Best Director?? The Iron Lady: 4 NODS??? Well, from now on, I will consider BAFTA as an almost irrelevant award. No words. D:
henry, no it does not. You aren’t viewing the film critically. You are viewing it with a bad attitude, intending to leave with false, pretentious, negative comments.
Come back here when you actually make any sense.
Really I know what I am talking about. I know that saga. So you dont want to face that that move has a lot of mistakes, bad screenplay, terrible directing.A story bad told. You have to watch the movie with a critical sense, not as a fan who love the movies.
The industry ad awards critics are agree with me. So I was right of thinking from a beginning that hp were not going to get any important award.
I am not talking shit, I am sayin the true, very realistic. My opinion is reflejed in what that movie got all this awads season.
THESE FILMS WILL BE NOMINATED!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRUST ME!!!!!!!
1.THE ARTIST
2.THE DECSENDENTS
3.HUGO
4.MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
5.DRIVE
6.MONEYBALL
7.THE HELP
8.THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO/TREE OF LIFE
*WAR HORSE WOULD AND SHOULD NOT MAKE IT.
*LOUD AND CLOSE DEFFINATLY SHOULD NOT.
*BRIDESMATES IS NOT AN OSCAR MOVIE.
*IF DRIVE DOESN’T MAKE IT, I WONT WATCH THE OSCARS TILL 2013
henry, It deserves it because it’s a brilliantly made film. The perfect end of the series. Just look at the critical reception and audience grade. All raves. Just because you hated it does not mean it’s a failure. Sorry to tell you, but the world’s opinion doesn’t reflect yours.
Why is it not getting recognition? Who knows. Why do you think fans are angry? All of those raves months ago and nothing.
“really? the fact it’s part of a 7 film-franchise is why it’s not getting any recognition.??? nobody believe that.”
They watch the film and have no idea what’s going on since they haven’t seen the other 7 films. How can you say that is not a factor? Stop being so stubborn.
If you were a true fan of harry potter. You’d realize about the mstake they made in the movie. Lack of emotion (big mistake), comedy unnecessary scenes in “a battle”?, total rush to finish the movie, and much more.
—
Emotion: That’s objective. Just because you didn’t feel any emotion doesn’t mean every didn’t. You can’t use that as a argument point and call it a mistake. I felt emotion. MANY others did too.
Comedy: There’s what? Less than 1 minute of comedy in the film? Just 1 line said by certain characters? I don’t see how that automatically means the film is a failure.
Rushed? It was perfectly paced. Every scene had an appropriated amount of time. I would even say that there are scenes that are pretty long, like the Prince’s tale. Considering the movie was adapted from the last 250 pages of the book, and it was 2 hours, is great.
Now, come up with better ‘mistakes’ or just don’t talk shit. You clearly don’t know what you are talking about.
@Hunter
really? the fact it’s part of a 7 film-franchise is why it’s not getting any recognition.??? nobody believe that.
Harry potter is being sunbbed because it is…bad ending involved in visual effects and nostalgia.. some fans will never accet that their favorite movie is failed.
If you were a true fan of harry potter. You’d realize about the mstake they made in the movie. Lack of emotion (big mistake), comedy unnecessary scenes in “a battle”?, total rush to finish the movie, and much more.
You call me pahtetic, and my opinon is invalid? haha you are funny. The one invalid opinion is who defend the movie without take in consideration the main why it is being snnubed.
The only thing that you say: harry potter deserve it because it is the end, and box office… rottem tomatoes… what? they are not good reason.
Meryl Streep & Michelle Williams -Golden Globes
Viola Davis -SAG
Meryl Streep -BAFTA
Meryl Streep -Oscar
imho 😀
Meryl Streep The Iron Lady-she will win! (%100) 😀
Picking Lynne Ramsey by snubbing more deserving directors doesn’t equalize or change the fact about the Rising Star nominees. I am fed up with the same poster sniping at me without taking everything that was said into consideration or looking at all of the factors & variables.
I am not even going to address the bashing and backlash towards the wrong movies and performances. Their list of nominations is a mess.
@ The sexism claim is not ridiculous, don’t tell me to get a grip when what you said is not even accurate as somebody who keeps track of it every year. The Rising Star Award nominations are chosen by the BAFTA jury and panel. The public votes for who wins the award but the nominations are decided by the BAFTA fellows. In the past, they always attempted to balance out the genders with at least a couple of female nominees. This is the first year, this list has been all male. It is also a pretty pathetic list considering the many breakout performances this year.
Not hated here? At all?
Yeah, right…
It’s 8 films, you knew that. I don’t think Harry Potter is hated here, at all. I thought Part 8 was a really good film.
People are just tired of those vocal few who spam this site. For most Harry Potter fans they’re real facepalm moments.
And I don’t understand the knowledge of Deathly Hallows Part 2 being ‘overrated’ when it seems like everyone on this site hates the film and don’t respect what it’s contributed to the cinematic world.
I’m sure if some big name director made the same exact film, it would get just as much love as Hugo. But because it’s director is some newcomer, nobody gives a shit. You know this is true.
That, and the fact it’s part of a 7 film-franchise is why it’s not getting any recognition.
The fact that The Tree of Life can’t even score a cinematography nod here makes BAFTA a complete joke. The other snubs just make the joke funnier.
henry, what mistakes? Tell me.
If you are one of those pathetic purist who think if the film isn’t exactly like the book, then don’t say shit. You opinion is invalid.
@Bennett are you 100% sure
Where the f is “Weekend”? Nothing? Not even screenplay, actor, British film, rising star for CUllen or New? Why the homophobia? It was a lauded british film that made bank in the UK! Vexing…
Elton,
I couldn’t agree with you more.
At least BAFTA embraced Drive and Tinker Tailor, and showed some love for Tilda’s movie as well.
I also think Judi Dench’s nomination is refreshing. She was great in “My Week With Marilyn”.
HP snub is completely disgusting.
As much as I want Close out of the race, how the heck is she now considered vulnerable? She scored 4 major precursors and was ineligible for BAFTA so it isn`t like she was snubbed altogether. And none of actresses that circulate around as possible upsets took her place in BAFTA nomination. So I`m curious whether this talk is just wishful thinking or there`s some legit reason to believe her hype has mercifully faded.
Finally a non critic/jornalistic group recognized the brilliance of “Drive” and “Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy”. That’s why I love the British
awful nominations. and what is up with best supporting actor this year? its a complete mess. like someone else said give the spot to ezra miller-he was at least convincing in his role whereas jonah hill..umm yeah we wont go there. i was hoping for a surprise in best actress-they could of at least thrown in a bafta to either dunst, mara, theron and olsen since its becoming obvious that they will be snubbed:/
anyway im totally over the precursors now and dont even care to see anymore of them. just bring on the oscar noms and lets get this over with..
I dont hate harry potter, Just I say the truth, harry potter 7 2 is overrated for the fans. Bafta awards considered that Hp didnt deserved to be nominated.
The fans dont see the mistakes that the movie had in every scenes.
13 million americans watched it. 3 million left the cinema before it’s over. Other 3 million slept in the middle. And other 3 million was just unable to feel it, or even understand what was being told.
henry, your ego is too big. Stop with the Potter hate.
Right on queue, it just picked up six more awards from the Georgia Film Critics Association:
http://www.georgiafilmcritics.org/
@SClub88Official: Because most Americans have absolutely horrible taste in film?
It made 41 million elsewhere and is the most respected film of the year by everyone outside of ‘academies’ and ‘guilds’.
Except for TTSP and LTAK and Lynne Ramsay, these nominations are all over the place. Mulligan for Drive? But they can’t pic Vanessa Redgrave so they choose Judy Dench? No Albert Brooks or Gosling but Drive as film and director, and Jonah Hill again? Did they just pick random names from a hat?
@bennett how come Tree if Life only made $13 million in domestic box office?
@Keifer yeah Harry Potter should’ve been nominated for Costume
Sorry if I may sound bias but BAFTA always picks in favorite of their own movies from UK including acting and directing. No directing for Alex Payne, no supporting act for Woodley, no Tree of Life for cinematography. I hope the deserving winners will win in the end…
A couple comments regarding some categories:
“Tinker Tailor” for best costumes? A really bad choice here. Costumes were nothing special and added little to the storyline/character development. Lisy Christl deserved a mention for “Anonymous” or Denise Crongenberg for “A Dangerous Method” would have been better choices.
It’s nice to see “HP” getting the technical love it deserves at least. I was hoping it would make the cinematography cut.
I’m very pleased with the nominations for “Drive”, except I would have placed Ryan Gosling in there for Best Actor (instead of Brad Pitt). And I thought Carey Mulligan’s performance in “Drive” was just fine. She deserved her nomination. It’s interesting that they snubbed Brooks for BSA. That can only hurt him come Oscar time. I think Bryan Cranston or Ron Perlman also gave damn good performances in “Drive” too, and have been yet unheralded.
I’m also glad to see the love for “We Need To Talk About Kevin”. I really admire Tilda Swinton’s performance in this movie.
Im so sick and tired of Pitt and Clooney, there is nothing exceptional about these two perfromances, there are at least 3 other actors who deserve it much more better, thats what makes me sick in this awards the overhyped media law who decide…and i realized that’s all about politics and campaigns..not about ” the deserving”.
As well as for the actresses, at the oscar race, so sick of streep and close these 2 old ladies sticking so hard ( one who shouldn’t deserve to win for this performance in a bad film, and the other mediocre peroformance+ mediocre film) sucking the chances of other amazing performances this year im thinking of Theron, Rooney, Olsen, Dunst…but it’s still open for the ladies still hoping…
I think Jim Broadbent might be entering the picture for an Oscar nomination. I base this on nothing more than a quirk in the Oscars where a surprise winner is often nominated again later (almost as a way of justifying their earlier win).
I noticed this with Marcia Gay Harden for Mystic River, Marisa Tomei (first for In the Bedroom, and again with The Wrestler), Juliette Binoche for Chocolat, and a couple of others I’m forgetting. Not to say that these winners didn’t deserve their subsequent nomination(s), but, in most cases, that nomination came as a bit of a surprise.
This could all be ridiculous, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Broadbent gets nominated this year.
Of course, by my theory, Adrien Brody and Kim Basinger are still in-line to get surprise nominations somewhere down the line :).
Everyone should probably stop with the “TREE OF LIFE IS DEAD ZOMG” comments, especially with regard to BAFTA nominations. First of all, the film wasn’t even screened for the organization, and secondly, these awards have absolutely nothing to do with -and no effect on- the Oscars.
The BAFTA nominations are laughable and the awards officially means nothing for 2011 maybe reflecting on 2012 movies they’ll get it right but i doubt it.
Oh, and Jonah Hill… if they wanted to honor some youth, they could´ve stay home and have chosen Ezra Miller as the tormented and the devilish Kevin.
People keep forgeting that 2011´s best picture is called THE TREE OF LIFE.
Well, actually it´s not really a film, it´s a poem, a gift to humanity.
Happy to see it getting snubbed.
At least now I´m sure it´s really good.
Glad to see it´s not melting in the same category as The Help, for example.
Can we have a discussion about what is and isn’t lead and supporting? Because most of the time I agree with the placements but other people seem to be calling “category fraud” a lot this year.
My problem with these BAFTA nominations is that in the WTF moments it’s not even that they supported their own. For example, if you get surprised to see Brooks snubbed you look and see that Jonah Hill is in his place. I think if Brooks had been a replaced by a Brit it would make some kind of sense at least. To me anyway. Same thing with Olivia Colman. Not that she’s been expected to get other nods, but you would have thought they’d have shoehorned her in here. And wouldn’t the HUGO snub have made more sense if Best Film went like this:
THE ARTIST
THE DESCENDANTS
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PART 2
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
As much as you might say HUGO should have gotten in before those films, if it were snubbed for something British I think it’d be more understandable.
In other nominee news, the nominations for the Canadian Genies were announced. Monsieur Lazhar has 9 noms. Cafe de Flore (which should have been Canada’s Oscar entry) leads with 13, followed by A Dangerous Method with 11.
http://cinemablographer.blogspot.com/2012/01/nominations-for-32nd-annual-genie.html
And just like the Globes, is Harvey Weinstein’s show all over again 🙁 At least Dragon Tattoo got something. Glad to see some love for Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy.
The Rising Star award was up for a vote in an attempt to stir some pre-nomination activity among the british public…not a terribly smart move considering that people voted for males only! But you can hardly blame BAFTA for that…and I’m sure they will change procedure again next year to avoid a repetition of this scenario.
The sexism claim is ridiculous, alas. Furthermore, if the BAFTA is indeed sexist, why would they nominate Ramsay for director?? So basically: get a grip!
If anything, the BAFTAs are slightly chauvinist when it comes to a preference for homebred material, but the again: tell me one country who does not have a patriotic bent when it comes to this kind of thing…?
On a side-note: Festivals a la Cannes or Venice is an entirely different proposition; international jurys are selected in order to secure a non-biased process…
I think this is a fantastic set of nominations and the BAFTAs really have got it right the last couple of years.
It was always going to happen, but it’s nice to see TTSS get poured over with nominations and it’s nice to see Drive get some major nominations.
Also for those saying they only responded to the media hype and campaigning, let’s not forget they acknowledges some seriously small budget films, Tyrannosaur, BLACK POND!
Harry Potter is dead in the water. It was NEVER in my opinion going to be a contender. It was seriously overrated.
Yay Drive!! But some of these choices are BIZARRE.
@Marie yeah I mean on the box office and critics chart Haryy Potter 7.2 average is 90.8%
“Sexist much? Not a single girl got nominated for their Rising Star Award.”
And yet a woman was nominated for director.
When is the penny going to drop with all these Potter fanboys! When it comes to Oscar its getting nothing other than a couple of techie nods at the most – get a grip and move on!
Sasha – why should the Brits stick to making tea? Perhaps we may just be telling AMPAS to stick to making burgers next week!!!!! Until then do not judge!
Sasha – why should the Brits stick to making tea? Perhaps we may just be telling AMPAS to stick to making burgers next week!!!!! Until then do not judge!
Oh just kidding! I thought you Brits enjoyed having someone take the piss out of you.
Well, if the brits can “stick to making tea” (to quote a not terribly smart remark by the editor-in-chief), at least they know how to spotlight films like TTSS and Drive, whom I’m sure will be neglected by the Oscars…and naming, Lynne Ramsay for best director!? That would never happen in the land of Oscar!
So even though there are glaring omissions (not least TOL for cinematography) and baffling inclusions (like Iron Lady for screenplay), this is not a lot worse than what we will see on Jan 24th. There will be pros and cons in both instances…and probably in equal measure.
Sexist much? Not a single girl got nominated for their Rising Star Award.
They favored the movies that the most hype and best media campaigns so yes, there was major groupthink here. It is mostly the usual suspects with a few egregious omissions.
Um, I am not going to waste my time debating with you since I will lose my mind. Analyze all of their nominees and the other factors. There was clear groupthink here about which movie campaigns played the game the best. Yes, Hugo missed the big nod but overall, examine their choices. The one big contender they did slight didn’t deserve it and you can argue genre bias. Also, Hugo did manage to get Best Director. I am not just talking about Hugo but their choices as a whole. Lose your tunnel vision. I have a right to criticize the BAFTA’s and there is a clear case of groupthink by favoring what the press labeled as frontrunners.
This could have been a great award season but now it is turning out to be the weakest and the worst. Such a waste of potential and foresight.
It looks like The Artist is the clear frontrunner. A well-executed gimmick that lacks the depth of the competition and many more deserving movies being snubbed. I might just tune out completely.
“This awards race has been a disaster and I just pray the Academy make’s better choices and breaks off from groupthink.
Christ, I can’t believe they snubbed Hugo in so many categories either!”
Umm…but BAFTA not nominating Hugo for BP IS breaking off from group think, isn’t it, since Hugo has been popping up everywhere else for BP? I’m puzzled by the Hugo omission as well, but it seems odd to accuse BAFTA of group think while also getting mad at it for not nominating the usual suspects such as Hugo. (Plus they nominated Drive for BP, so I can’t be terribly mad at them.)
This is a travesty, and people need to quit mocking the support for HP considering it was far superior to many of the films on the list.
I find it hard to believe the British industry loved The Help and The Descendants so much. They are just trying to be “in” with the supposed frontrunners and what movies dominated the American media discussion.
Im in total shock right now like seriously, for best actess??? Bejo who is considered for a supporting is there, instead of Young Adult impressive performance of Charlize Theron?? this is shameful/ or ronney, what is wrong with them??? am i dreaming??
Iron Lady for original screenplay and no young Adult well go the hell that’s all what i can say, the most dissapointed weak choices ever, putting bad movies with a mixed reviews is shameful, and puttting someone considered supporting instead of terrfic major lead performance is even more worse.
“Does this mean Hugo has no chance at winning Best Picture, when was the last time a film won the Oscars for best pic without a best film nod from the BAFTA’s?”
I remember that Million Dollar Baby wasn’t nominated for BAFTAs the year it won at the Oscars, but I think that was because the movie was ineligible that year because it was such a late release. Hope I’m remembering that correctly.
Other than that, I think the answer is no. In recent history, anyway, since BAFTA moved its award show to before the Oscars (2001 they started that, I think), no movie (other than M$B) has won the Oscar BP award that hasn’t at least been nominated for the BAFTA BP award. That doesn’t mean it can’t happen this year. But yeah, this exclusion hurts Hugo’s chances of an Oscar BP win, in my mind. Hugo will still be nominated for BP at the Oscars, of course.
All signs continue to point to The Artist.
Before the gloating begins, I have to say it was very plausible to assume that the BAFTA’s would bestow major nominations for Harry Potter.
I can’t believe how it has been shut out like this over The Help for pete’s sake. Obviously, they were influenced by the precursors and followed the pack. I am just baffled and disgusted. I think this is the worst lineup out of the precursors. Such bullshit.
I seriously thought they had the taste to make War Horse, The Dangerous Method, In the Land of Blood & Honey, Harry Potter and the Deathy Hallows pt.2, and so many other movies to make a comeback.
This awards race has been a disaster and I just pray the Academy make’s better choices and breaks off from groupthink.
Christ, I can’t believe they snubbed Hugo in so many categories either!
Why is Carey Mulligan nominated for doing absolutely nothing?
Absence of TREE OF LIFE in Cinematography is embarrassing, to put it kindly. And…they obviously loved DRIVE (hats off)- so absence of Albert Brooks is embarrassing too.
Tintin best animated feature
Oh dumb BAFTA people. Don’t even try to vote on movies from now on. Stick to making tea. GRRRRRRRRRRRR.
No Hugo for Best Pic, no GWTDT for Director, editing, or Pic (although I do love that Drive is there). Does this mean Hugo has no chance at winning Best Picture, when was the last time a film won the Oscars for best pic without a best film nod from the BAFTA’s?
God, I hope Fassbender pulls off an Oscar nod. If not, people will look back 5 years from now and think “WTF!?”
I think that it might be about time that we stick a fork in Vanessa Redgrave…
Disappointed by the lack of “Moneyball” in Picture and Editing, but it looks like Jonah Hill’s chances for Oscar just went through the roof.
So much for the theory that the Brits won’t go for The Help as much as folks in the States…
@henry Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, Bridesmaids, A Better Life, The Help, and Attack the Block were released in the summer
Dead henry?! Was it ever dead, cause I don’t think it’s dead cause every year since 2001 I see kids, teenagers, and a few adults dressing in Harry Potter costumes, tv sketch shows doing some sketches of Harry Potter movies like All That/Saturday Night Live/Mad TV/etc., I could name a few reasons why it’s most succeessful cinematic franchise of all time, and does everyone think Daniel Radcliffe is a bad actor?
My apologies to the Oscars. I have no interest in you this year after the recent Globes and Guilds nominations. BAFTA is where it’s at.
@mecid
How Stupid and Terrible Mistakes:
T T S S – Best picture? War Horse must be there.

You”re right my friend. Similar awards make masterpiece films nothing.
@Craig Z. robertlowercaseA is right
@henry if it was dead than no one would in the US and UK saw it last year when it released, would’ve got all negative reviews, made less money in the domestic box office (than We Need to Talk About Kevin did) and the international box office, would not have been nominated and won any award, and no one would go buy a DVD of Harry Potter 7.2.
everyone ann america and UK? haha you are funny guys. You are kidding so much. You have to wake up, and face that Harry potter is not nothnng compared with the others movies. Most of the peoples, between them (the important awards) know that.
The bafta didnt do what you wanted. So Understad what those awards are trying to say: Harry Potter is just summer movie.
@Mattoc great lie
SClub88Official
dont you realize of the truth?? Harry potter is dead.
@SC8Official 1) not only in the UK, but everyone in America and around the world knows that. 2) Hard to believe it was Daniel Radcliffe announced the nominees.
Oh come on, those are the nominees for outstanding british film? Everyone knows that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the best and the most outstanding british film of 2011.

“the artist” for cinematography over “tree of life”. REALLY?
LYNNE RAMSAY! Yes!!!!
Happy to see Tinker Tailor get so much love!
And Incendies!
And Shame, Philip Seymour Hoffman!
Thanks BAFTA!
(Some odd overkill for The Artist though…Sound? Really? Were they nominated for lack therefof or simply for the one sequence? Kind of a slap in the face for other contenders… at least they put Bejo in lead, where she belongs.)
BAFTA is a tricky beast. On the one hand, sometimes their nominees in a particular category don’t match up that well with Oscar. At other times they match perfectly and give indications of late shift momentum in various races. Javier Bardem’s nomination in best actor first popped up on the BAFTA list before he got his “surprise” Oscar nomination. BAFTA has also signaled to us the appeal of “The Reader,” not to mention the tides building for a Cotillard and a Swinton Oscar win in 2007.
So take these results with a grain of salt, I guess, but anyone who just flippantly discounts BAFTA nominations doesn’t know much about awards season.
The absence of “Hugo” in BP is baffling. The sound nomination for “The Artist” is another indicator of the depth of support for that movie. When a movie gets a nomination in a category no one was anticipating, that often indicates a winner. Remember when “The Hurt Locker” got an Oscar nomination in some category (score?) that nearly drove the “Avatar” supporters over the deep end?
For those wondering why Carey Mulligan was nominated for Drive and not Shame, she was designated lead actress for Shame.
Really sad that Hugo missed Best Picture. It may wind up winning more awards than whatever film does win best picture.
No nods in supporting acting for TTSS?
Jonah Hill instead of Benedict Cumberbatch?
And why wasn’t The Artist nominated for special effects? Kidding.
My quick take:
** Hugo not nominated for best film…huh?
** Actor…all deserving…that would be my top five for Oscar noms.
** Script…The Iron Lady? That’s a shock.
** I am bummed that neither Tree of Life nor Extremely Loud got any recognition.
This should be Tinker/Tailer’s moment of glory (it’s that film’s turn, after all). I hope the Baftas break rank a bit and honor some deserving players still waiting for recognition.
Some bizarre omissions (Redgrave, Coleman) and inclusions (screenplay – Iron Lady) detract a bit from what is usually a pretty solid group. Thrilled for the Drive attention, Fassie and McQueen, and the strong showing by Kevin (Swinton, Ramsey, et al). Plus, I get another chance to root for Incendies (a little patriotism doesn’t hurt).
Tilda Swinton is winning the BAFTA for lead actress, come on people it’s Britain!!!!! Tilda’s own country.
Very few surprises here. All the major players. Happy to see Jim Broadbent get acknowledged. He’s always solid and his turn in The Iron Lady is overlooked.
NO SCREENERS OF TREE OF LIFE WERE SENT TO BAFTA MEMBERS. just to make things clear 😛 and this has no effect on the oscars as the deadline for nominations is over. hopefully it just snuck in with a BP/Director nom. But good for Drive, Europeans love the film!
Most pleasant surprise: Thor and Loki up for the Rising Star Award.
The rest… holding my judgement till when I see most of the films nominated.
@craigz – oh…thanks for the info. I have not seen the film but I know it got good Perf reviews in Cannes.
Mattoc, I do not believe Sean Penn is eligable. His film has not been shown in New York or LA yet. Next november I hear.
If there is gonna be a suprise in that catagory I can imagine it being maybe Shannon or Bichir
The Artist for Best Sound? Hmmmm…..
Mattoc, I actually think it has a better chance of a Best Director nomination actually. Because there is no Best Foriegn Director catagory to take votes from Farhadi away from Best Director but on the other hand……They can choose just to place it in Foriegn Language film catagory and not feel the need to vote for it in Best Picture.
Hope that makes sense. That wasn’t easy to put that thought on the page.
Since there are usually some ‘inspired’ and some ‘ random’ nominations each year with actors. I will put one out thee that no one has mentioned. Sean Penn in This must be the place.
LMFAO. Carey Mulligan for DRIVE? Are you kidding me?! She’s 100x better in SHAME!
Gage, it did for Carey Mulligan
@craigz – it’s very possible. I don’t think so, but I would like so.
The film I think will get nominated and I would bet my house on it.
It’s one of my favourite films of the year, but it may not be cinematic enough for voters.
I’m aware of that James but I never thought Schnabel had a chance to win. Not with the Coens and PTA in the race.
But that’s not really the point I’m trying to make here. I’m just saying it was an unexpected(though inspired) choice
“I always kind of thought Swinton was the front runner. Williams, Davis and Streep are all Americans. Giving swinton the edge.”
Nationality didn’t seem to matter to them when Marion Cotillard beat Julie Christie.
Oh and I think safe money says Hazanavicious. Marty may have a chance. But if The Artist is really the juggernaught it looks like it may become it is unwise to predict a split.
Zero nods for “Tree of Life” and Philip Seymour (a wonderful actor) nominated for one of his worst perfomances ever. Dear people from the BAFTA, go to Hell……
@Craig Z, but Schnabel was nominated for Best Director at the Oscars and the film was a very strong contender for a BP nom. It also got nominated for writing, editing and cinematography. It was very much in the thick of the fight.
I’m going with a big suprise with that fifth slot for Best Director.
Payne
Scorcese
Hazanavicious
Allen
Farhadi
I’m gonna predict A Separation to go all City of God and Talk to Her on us and get Director and Screenplay nods. Not because I truely believe it’s gonna happen but because I’m bored. Also what do I really got to lose? If I’m wrong oh well I just went for it but……if I’m right. I’ll be the only person I’ve seen call this one. Which I think is possible. Unlikely but possible.
@Carson – it is offensive…
I wouldn’t mind if they nominated it for 15 awards and took them all. I can just put it down to the film being subjective, and not to my taste, but Jesus H Christ – a screenplay?
Meryl was in it long enough to stop me from creating a scene, but…it is awful
No Hugo for BP, Screenplay…? The Artist for sound?
Are they mad?
T.
I would say Alfredson for the BAFTA.
AMPAS will go petty much DGA I suspect, with Malick the only exceptional at the expense of Fincher, and possibly Alfredson in at the expense of Allen.
Payne
Scorsese
Malick
Alfredson
Hazanavicius
I think TOL will get nominated a bit at AMPAS and I think the award is between Scorsese and Malick – honestly.
No cinematography nom for Tree of Life is laughable. One word for the BAFTA-Voters: Incompetence.
I know what film I was talking about James. Masterfull movie BTW. I’m just finding it suprising that they gave the award to Schnabbel since he was never really in the running for the Oscar. They usually keep it pretty close.
The Iron Lady being nominated for anything outside of lead actress, besides if they had thrown Olivia Colman a line for Best Supporting Actress (a better option than Mulligan in Drive, for starters), is downright offensive.
Oh I just want to say that I watched The Help today and I’m in agreement with you guys. The performances were amazing of course. Davis was great as always. Spencer was nomination worthy but I was really blown away by Chastain. I hope she wins. Janney and Howard did very good jobs too. Underappreciated this year.
All that said. Everything else about that film I just found merely acceptable and I was really just withing it would end for the last 40 minutes honestly.
@Craig Z, you’re talking about my favorite film from this millennium, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which won best director and best foreign film at the Globes. It was not eligible though for BP drama because it was in the French language.
Mattoc, those predictions seem pretty solid to me. I’ll guess Alferson.
How do you see Best Director going at the Oscars
@phantom
Oh crap, I hope not. But I still don’t see “The Help” as a potential “Driving Miss Daisy” scenario. DMD won 3 globes (comedy, but still) and most importantly, was a movie that only relied on the juggernaut performances of Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman. “The Help” doesn’t have that powerhouse duo factor going for it. Viola Davis IMHO is still suffering from some category confusion and is not entirely lead in my opinion. Also, when “Driving Miss Daisy”, it had no opponents such as “The Artist” that was scoring everything everywhere.
Sorry, OCOs hijacked my keyboard and wants to spew propaganda everywhere…
I’ll go for Alfredson or Scorsese, probably the former. No disrespect to Hugo, but TTSS is grew, and gets better and better with each viewing.
Phantom….. So who wins director? (that is honestly the more important award to me)
Sadly I dissagree with Hazanavicius not being a strong contender.(go Marty!) Sure he didn’t win the Globe but I mean that catagory at the Globes is usually all over the place. Remember when Schnabel won despite his film not being nominated for picture?
@koles – I think she would be one of the front runners. I think Viola will win here. There is only one reason IMO to nominate The Help for BP, and that is the perf’s – without them it is very MOTR. And Viola is the best of a vet good lot.
Even thoug Charlotte Gainsborg is not nominated for BA, I’m still hopeful, by the love of Christ, she’ll snatch it (no up intended)
By the way, people, important fact : there are 3 best picture contenders that pulled off PGA/SAG-ensemble/BAFTA-bp/HFPA-bp/BFCA-bp nominations : The Artist, The Descendants and….The Help. No Hugo, Midnight in Paris., War Horse, Dragon Tattoo, no…it is The Help. So I think it might be time to seriously consider another ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ kind of Oscar-year…a potential Best Picture winner without a strong Best Director contender.
I always kind of thought Swinton was the front runner. Williams, Davis and Streep are all Americans. Giving swinton the edge.
Does anyone else think that with the directing nomination for Lynne Ramsay, Tilda Swinton suddenly becomes a frontrunner for the BAFTA? I’m not sure the Brits will be keen on awarding a portrayal of their former prime minitser (that most of them still remember very well) done by an american actress, that they not necessarily might consider doing the real iron lady justice. They simply may not rise above their personal experience and not ocus on the quality of the acting itself. Tilda however has very fond memories o the BAFTA that in the end actually won her the Oscar.
Alright then. As you were.
I did stop. I appologized to Ryan and Beth( I doubt Sasha is awake). Haven’t said anything since
@Craigz – stop being a shit. He wants to end it, so bloody well end it.
