  1. For me, probably the best list of nominees of any critics group so far. I especially like the multiple mentions for Weekend (BOTH Chris New and Tom Cullen!). My only quibble: I would have liked to have seen some love for Jane Eyre.

  7. I don’t think AMPAS would touch these with a 10-foot pole. Interesting that Hugo is the only major Oscar film that made the Best Picture list. Drive and Tree of Life, but their Oscar chances are probably slim to none. Moneyball got a screenplay nom. The Artist was shut out, as were The Descendants and The Help.

Nice to see some mention of Meek’s Cutoff here at the end of the year. And wow at all the love for A Separation!! I so wish it could snag a screenplay nom or something on Tuesday.

  8. I agree this a brilliant list, the best so far this season.
Specially because it’s not americanophile. It’s a shame year after year we continue being so egocentric and self centered as we recognize only the same names and faces in awardshow.

It’s clearly Clooney isn’t the best actor of the year. Not considering worldwide.
Actually this is the most universal and globalized set of nominees i’ve seen these days and that’s just how Oscar should be.

Asghar Farahdi’s screenplay is the best we can see this year. And Why isn’t A Separation considered to be in the Best Picture category?

It’s by far one of the best pictures of the year, such as Melancholia, The Tree of Life, Drive. All of these films are not commercial enough to achive a nomination at the Oscar, unfortunately.

  21. I love how they can separate categories amongst a lot of movies. Just because you LOVE a movie doesn’t mean it should be nominated for every award (like the BAFTAS nominating The Artist for sound). I love that Midnight in Paris has the only nomination it deserves. All these nominations are quality and very few people can refute that.

  30. Midnight in Paris and The Descendants would have been seen as passable entertainments in the years before the sequel/prequel/remake. Now, they’re mistaken for masterpieces.

Even last year’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger was on par with MIP. Not sure why the latter is considered the shit.

  31. Interesting that they didn’t go for Tilda since they noticed her in both I Am Love and Julia.

    VA:F [1.9.17_1161]
    Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)
  32. Well, in Julia and I Am Love there were certainly more exciting performances. That’s kinda the difference between the cinephiles and Oscars: the latter seem to have a five-year lag at least in noticing who’s doing good job. I mean look at Tilda’s career and imagine she’s gonna be remembered by some as nominated for “Michael Clayton” and “Talk about Kevin”. Look at Woody’s career and imagine his fourth Oscar isn’t gonna be for “Crimes and Misdemeanors” or “Manhattan” or “Zelig” but for “Midnight in Paris”.

I’m still waiting for “Martha…”, “Margaret”, “Weekend” and some others to open in Poland, but I’ve seen the majority of these movies and I have to say it was a really great year. I may find it silly that they’re all gonna be overlooked when a bunch of mediocre movies, performances and other efforts are gonna fight for the most known film awards, but what do I care.

  39. I sure hope Martha Marcy May Marlene is getting attention for it’s editing based on the immense quality of the performances and not because critics think it’s structure was someone created in post.

I mean I understand in a hyperlinked structured film like Babel or Traffic since the cuts between stories are so frequent that it is very possible the editor had an opportunity to restructure scenes, but in the case of MMMM the story spends long portions of time from one part to the next. And the information conveyed about the characters from one part to the next is so intricate and detailed that it’s hard to imagine that it’s structure wasn’t nailed down in the script.

I could be wrong and Martha Marcy May Marlene is a good film and any good film deserves credit for it’s editing. It’s just that this is like the 3rd time I’ve seen the film singled out for it’s editing and at the same time left off the best picture/director/screenplay category. It makes me think that many critics probably have no idea what goes into making a film and that perhaps should be taken into account when considering the worthiness of their opinions.

I see what you’re saying but bear in mind there’s more going on with the editing in MMMM beyond simply the deft structuring of sequences. Cutting within the scenes was just as slipperysharp, I hope you agree.

    VA:F [1.9.17_1161]

  46. Perhaps, PaulH, the reason that none of these films made over $25 million is that. generally speaking, it’s pretty tough to get the average filmgoer to see something a little different, a little original. I’m assuming that you’re the average filmgoer. And judging by what I know of your opinion based on previous posts you’ve made, it’s no surprise none of these films have made more than $25 million.

Intelligent filmmaking for intelligent people, I suppose…

  47. WHAT!? NO HARRY POTTER!? … ok, just kidding. I watched A Seperation yesterday and it makes me sad, that the Oscars, well… are what they are. A Seperation really is… between all the great movies out of 2011 A Seperation is the one which is indispensable. If no movie had been made 2011, A Seperation would have been the biggest loss!

  48. Gret to see Ruiz in for Best Director for a film that surely stands in the Top 3 of the year (MYSTERIES OF LISBON) THE TREE OF LIFE is tops, but I guess it’s a given it would make a big show here.

  51. @Ryan Adams

I really have nothing but good things to say about the editing of MMMM and the film itself. But I do think this is a case of “Omg, non linear structure! What fantastic editing!”

To be fair, AMPAS has been just as guilty of this at times. For example, the nomination for The Hours in 2002- although again I’d like to think it got in based on the quality of the performances and the film itself. But part of me knows that the non-linear structure is what cinched it (and that’s an award voted on by actual editors).

Anyways, MMMM was nominated pretty randomly for editing both here and at INOCA. I just think people should look into these disciplines more thoroughly and develop a more educated opinion on what achievements should actually be considered as ‘best of the year.’

  53. This has to be the best list of top movies!
I love the MMMM is getting the kudos it deserved. It’s a bit strange to me that Hugo is nominated for best pic but Scorsese didn’t even get a director’s nom….anyways, I’m thankful that The Tree of Life is getting some award love….also for Poetry….I would even nominate it for best director….and I’m VERY surprised that it does not have a script nomination since it won the Cannes writing award….also, very happy about the scores noms for Igelesias!
