BAFTA Longlist. Asterisks denote chapter selections. By my count, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and My Week with Marilyn lead the count with 16 mentions each; followed by The Iron Lady with 14; The Artist, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Midnight in Paris and War Horse with 13; Hugo and The Help with 12; Drive and Harry Potter with 11; Ides of March and We Need to Talk About Kevin with 10; Moneyball with 8; and The Descendants with 7.

wow Brits sure HATE “The Tree of Life”
No Harry Potter & TDH 2 in the Best Film long list? What a snub!!
yea whats with all the ToL hate? hope he makes the oscar cut!
No Tree of Life best picture!?! Are you fucking kidding me? That is a disgrace. But then again I don’t give a shit about the Bafta’s anyway.
Interesting to see some Kevin love- deserved- and Senna in the BP longlist
Oh no, no HP for BP, there will be hell to pay!!
Senna!
Vanessa Redgrave is not on the shortlist for “Coriolanus”. It looks like we can finally take her name off of the Best Supporting Actress list. No Golden Globe nod, no SAG and now no BAFTA-not even the shortlist of 15 names. This was the group who was supposed to herald her entry back into the Oscar mix. Instead they replaced her with Roache, Burke and Wanamaker.
Hmm, I’m starting to wonder if only the critics will champion Albert Brooks. He wasn’t a “chapter selection” here and was snubbed by SAG.
I have mixed feelings about the HP snub…. On one hand it is a good movie and should have made it but on the other hand the reactions from Scott and OCO are gonna be hilarious.
Well anyways Hugo and Drive FTW!!!
@ Squasher: Brooks is on the list!
I hope Harry Potter’s absence from the BAFTA long list of 15 BP films will silence those who were arguing that the Academy’s British vote would somehow magically catapult HP into the Oscar’s BP race. I know HP was nominated for British Film, but if it can’t even make the BAFTA long list for Best Picture…
Where the fuck is Vanessa Redgrave? That’s one of the oddest omissions I’ve seen all season.
No Take Shelter doesn’t make me happy, nor does no Shame nor The Tree of Life for Best Picture. Also, Jessica Chastain only has one performance in contention. These are disappointing results.
On the other hand, there is some potential for a good slate of nominations here: Olivia Colman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rooney Mara. Maybe BAFTA can redeem itself.
@Robert…he’s on the list, but not a frontrunner (no asterisk)
I know they are both british films but Iron lady got 9 and My Week with Marilyn got 11. It seems a bit much. I guess it’s between Streep and Williams then.
I guess BAFTA didn’t like Andrea Arnold’s revisioning of Wuthering Heights. Nice to see Jane Eyre on the long list. But no Steve McQueen love?
Anyone else surprised Extremely Loud could not even make the long list for Supporting Actor, Screenplay, Cinematography or Editing? WB must be infuriated.
Also, further proof of The Ides of March holding resonance with voters. Never discount political dramas!
No Redgrave. No Tree of Life. No McQueen. Iron Lady, best film? Must be something in the water
Ah, thanks Squasher. I didn’t even notice the asterisks!
^Hmm. ‘Kevin’ got a huge number of nominations and Tilda is British. She could win, but I think BAFTA will go to Meryl anyway.
Replace The Iron Lady with The Tree of Life and you get a pretty awesome slate of BP nominees. Any chance the Academy goes for 15 next year haha?
Could this much love for Tinker Tailor be a good sign for Gary Oldman?
“The Tree of Life” is the most overrated movie of the year so I’m glad that it loses almost everything (except Golden Palm – this decision was a disgrace for Cannes Film Festival obviously). “Harry Potter” – the second most overrated movie of the year – surely shouldn’t be nominated in best picture category.
But I’m quite suprised that Vanessa Redgrave for CORIOLANUS didn’t make the cut and I wonder if TAKE SHELTER or A BETTER LIFE were eligible here.
Happy to see Midnight in Paris get some *contemporary* technical love for Cinematography, Production Design, Makeup and Costume. And, wait, wwhat… Visual Effects?
@JonC —I hope so ! Finally some well deserved love for TTSS in MAJOR categories .I am surprised by the absence of HP but then if they had nominated it many would say BAFTA lost all his credibility LOL .
@Someone – A Better Life and Take Shelter were both eligible.
All this ‘My Week with Mariyln’ kudos is madness.
I mean, two supporting actresses are chapter selections1 At least neither is Julia Ormond. It looks like the Brits filled out their ballots with a rubber stamp.
Happy for the Tinker Tailor love.
Love all the Midnight in Paris mentions!
There must be some kind of mistake how could they miss Vanessa when Coriolanus got several other mentions. I smell something rotten here, she’s only ever been nominated two times for a BAFTA, odd considering she’s british and have 6 Oscar noms and 8 big screen Golden Globe noms. She’s certainly just as fine an actress as british contemporaries Julie Christie, Judi Dench, and Maggie Smith who each has gotten, 8, 11, and 11 BAFTA noms. I don’t get it because I’ve seen Coriolanus and she’s terrific in it. They should seriously consider a write in nom a la Bette Davis. Guess she doesn’t come off as a warm and adorable old lady enough.
no screeners were sent out for A Better Life and Take Shelter, so not many members would have seen it and the distributors clearly didn’t care to push the films for nominations.
Tree of Life snub is no surprise to me (more than ever, it’s clear that is has no shot on the prizes like Oscar, SAG, Bafta, etc; it’s to radical art cinema for them). But the absence of Harry Potter, the final curtain for the most important product of british movie industry of the last decade, is really a surprise. And with 15 names on the Best Director, to don’t have Steve McQueen is a Shame (he can easily be on the place of Clint Eastwood as the one director nominated, but not his film).
And in a perfect and decent world, Eddie Marsann could be nominated for the Oscar for “Tyrannosaur” (he also really should got a nod for “Happy Go Lucky”)
Woha, for such a divise film 14 noms for TIL in the longlist (including best film AND director) is quite astonishing.
It will only get Best Actress and Make Up noms, but still very impressive.
Pretty ridiculous that HP is nominated for Best Screenplay and all those other categories yet they go with the 2nd rate Best Film nomination…
Also glad to see some traction for Bryce Dallas Howard, since she really got one’s feelings of disgust flowing. She carried a lot of that movie because she was the one who all of the other actresses squared off against.
The winners in the asterisk derby appear to be The Artist (10), Hugo (9) and Tinker Tailor (8). All of them have directing asterisks, as do Drive and Kevin. Will that be the BP shortlist?
Tree of Life isn’t winning anything? Apparently someone hasn’t been paying attention to the multitude of critics awards it’s been piling up for months. Oh and that one Palme d’Ore thing.
The guilds and “Academy” almost never reward divisive art. Do you really think that out of all those films, a single one of them will be looked back upon with the same esteem as Tree of Life?
Your answer should be ‘no’, for the record.
The only thing that makes sense really for why it’s getting snubbed everywhere is that Potter doesn’t really have enough acting force (I mean it’s a terrific ensemble but not having a standout lead actor or actress or a bunch of supporting really hurts a film’s chances at the big award) or a prestigious director.
im loving the strong showing for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Scott, The Artist and Drive don’t have prestigious directors either yet they keep getting nominated…. Just sayin
Was WEEKEND disqualified for some reason? Otherwise, what a crock of shit that SUBMARINE, THE IRON LADY and MY WEEK WITH MARILYN make it on the short list for British film, but WEEKEND (one of the best reviewed films of the year) gets ZERO nods????
Beth, Do you find it suprising that Hugo didn’t get an astrisk for Adapted Screenplay…. seems to me with all those others it would.
It is still totally in for Oscar though
Nice to see some recognition at least for those that deserve it and have been largely overlooked since receiving such praise in initial reviews…
Alan Rickman (supporting actor)
Stuart Craig (production design)
Eduardo Serra (cinematography)
Alexander Desplat (composer)
and these 2 as well, though not as glaring of omissions elsewhere
Steve Kloves (screenplay)
Mark Day (editing) – was a hell of a lot better then the choppiness of OotP and HBP…heck, I’d say the Prince’s Tale sequence was even masterfully done
Sure Craig, but for them to nominate a director of a blockbuster film…well, you know how rare that is. Personally I feel Yates is deserving but it’s tough competition and obviously bias wins out.
Tree of Life was perhaps the most prominent film NOT to send DVD Screeners to BAFTA members. Don’t know the reason.
Bias againgst what? Fantasy films? Hugo and Midnight in Paris are doing quite well
Some things strike me as odd about these lists, although some things always do. This year in particular, though, seems afflicted by some curious omissions:
- The Tree of Life has one mention. That’s ridiculous. It is, of course, for Best Cinematography, but the fact that BAFTA has seemingly turned its back on this film is very strange indeed. Seeing as it’s quickly losing steam with the Guilds (no PGA nor WGA nomination), this is not good news for one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year.
- Vanessa Redgrave is absent from the Best Supporting Actress list. I’m considering counting her out of consideration for the Oscar now – this, I felt, was her last lifeline. Yes, she has had some attention from the critics’ groups, and deservedly so, but if she is to receive an Oscar nomination, it’ll be quite a feat to do so without recognition from any of the major groups.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is out of Best Film. It now seems borderline impossible for this film to be Oscar-nominated for Best Picture. Many were expecting it to show up strongly at BAFTA, but that’s now out of the question. It could still be nominated for, and win Best British Film, though, but that amounts to very little in the wider context of the Oscar race.
The asterisked candidates are those who would have been nominated had this first round process decided the nominations. We can deduce the following numbers from that:
The Artist: 10 including Best Director, so expect 11 including Best Film
Drive: 3 including Best Director, although no other major categories
Hugo: 9 including Best Director, so expect 10 including Best Film
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: 8 including Best Director, so expect 10 including Best Film and British Film
We Need to Talk About Kevin: 2 including Best Director
I don’t see either Drive or We Need to Talk About Kevin making the Best Film cut with those numbers. BAFTA are likelier than Oscar to go 3/5 matching b/w Best Picture and Director (in corresponding years).
Other high scorers:
The Adventures of Tintin: the Secret of the Unicorn: 3
The Help: 4
Moneyball: 3
My Week with Marilyn: 6
Also, The Descendants, The Iron Lady and War Horse each have two. The results for mentions on the longlist overall are:
The Artist: 13
Drive: 11
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: 13
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2: 11 (without Best Film)
The Help: 12
Hugo: 12
The Ides of March: 10
The Iron Lady: 14
Midnight in Paris: 13
My Week with Marilyn: 16
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: 16
War Horse: 13
We Need to Talk About Kevin: 10
One might think that My Week with Marilyn looks very likely to secure a Best Film nomination based on the data, but two of its nominations are for Best Supporting Actress, a category with six asterisked contenders at present, and it doesn’t particularly look like Best Film material. The Help is in a similar situation, bolstered by the fact that The Help’s popularity is significantly weaker in the UK than in the US. As a result, I expect the BAFTA Best Film nominees to be:
The Artist
The Descendants (it’ll pick up more nominations next time around)
Hugo
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
War Horse (it hasn’t been released yet in the UK, and may pick up speed when it is released)
they have not nomimated yet.maybe harry potter wont make the edting, screenlay and britain film in the finak nominations
Castle, I actually agree. HP probably won’t make Supporting Actor, Editing or Screenplay in the real nominations. To bad actually. I’d like to see Rickman get in.
No Tom Hardy love at all??? I thought he was a lock for Warrior, but considering he was one of the only guys not nominated for Tinker Tailor, something tells me they had something against him this year. No Nick Nolte either, so maybe Warrior wasn’t even eligible?
Well amongst the competition it really should not get in for editing…screnplay maybe, but there was a few too many bad comic relief moments. The ones it should be making every nominee list for though are the first 4 I listed.
@Craig Z – I’m assuming that the writers didn’t love Hugo’s screenplay as much as they did the dramas like Ides of March, The Descendants, Moneyball and The Help. Presumably they regard it as a director’s film. From what the BAFTA website says, I think these asterisks denote the separate chapter voting, not which contenders have the most total votes.
In earlier rounds, all members have the option to vote in all categories, but can abstain in any category in which they do not feel they have sufficient experience to make an informed decision. In the first round, although all members can vote, the votes of the relevant chapter in each category are counted separately, and their top 5 are guaranteed to go through to the second round. These chapter selections are flagged in the longlist.
BTW, I must say my disappointment at them selecting Potter for British film as opposed to overall Best Picture is somewhat eclipsed by the pleasure of seeing that pretentious piece of crap film only listed for one category!
WOW no Vanessa Redgrave im literally shocked. Her own country doesn’t even recognize her…….wow!
Looks like the terrible week for Tree of Life continues
this really sucks. I guess the films reward will be winning the 2nd most critics awards of the past year, finishing no.1 and top 10 on the most critics top 10 lists.
15 No.1
8 No.2′
49 Top 10′:)
Notice that there is no love for Albert Nobbs – No Glenn Close, No Janet McTeer, no makeup. I guess they didn’t receive screeners. (I did not see the film, I am simply commenting).
The truly big question in my eyes is whether this strong support for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is any indication that the Oscars will embrace it a little more than the precursors have. I think production design and possibly score are almost a lock for Oscar nominations. But best picture, Gary Oldman, adapted screenplay? It is, after all, the strongest and almost only film that Focus Features is campaigning with.
Does anyone have a clue if Gary Oldman is doing the rounds and whether he is well liked in Hollywood?
I just noticed how shaky the chances of War Horse look. Spielberg does not have an asterisk for director, and the movie itself has no asterisk for screenplay and editing, those critical categories for a movie that’s wants to be a threat to win Best Picture. The early BAFTA results do not suggest WH is going to do particularly well here, either.
@BrandStrategyGuru:
I think I read somewhere that “Albert Nobbs” was not eligible for the BAFTAs.
Here’s hoping Tyrannosaur can be nominated a lot! Colman deserves best actress!!
Albert Nobbs was not eligible.
Warrior and Weekend were eligible.
What makes a film not eligible?

Albert Nobb is not elegible this year, maybe it will be nominated the next year.
@Scott – You have to enter it for consideration, and screen it for BAFTA members and stuff like that. There’s a requirement (similar to Oscar) that it play in a UK theater prior to the deadline. Some distributors of smaller films don’t feel it’s worth their while to do all this, given their budget constraints. Some enter their films but make no attempt to send screeners, as that can cost money (especially if they are US indies and the DVDs have to be made compatible with European DVD players).
re: War Horse
I agree War Horse is on shaky ground. I think we need to wait for the PGA, DGA and a few more guilds to be sure about its footing.
A snub say in DGA, ASC or Eddies would be bad news.
Going by those numbers Potter is actually the 8th best of those mentioned for either of the Best Film lists.
In case that wasn’t very clear…
Drive- #2
The Artist- #3
Hugo- #4
The Descendants- #5
Midnight in Paris- #7
Moneyball- #8
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy- #15
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2- #16
@Casey
I second that. The academy should replace glenn close with Olivia Colman she’d be a great surprise nominee, she was incredible in tyrannosaur.
Vanessa Redgrave has always been more acclaimed in the US than she has in Britain. Strange but that’s the way it’s seemed to play out and just because she wasn’t on the BAFTA list doesn’t mean she won’t show up on the Oscar list. The problem will be that there are a lot of outstanding supporting performances and she may find herself lost in the shuffle.
The Tree of Life eh I think it got what it deserved. Just because the “critics” fawned all over it doesn’t mean that the rest of us did and in fact it’s pretty clear that most of the public did not fawn all over it.
Harry mpotter have not been mentioned in practically in any top 10 list of the year, only national board review. Any other critcs asociation have taken in consideration. So YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY. Totally ignored
Wow the best actress long list has a lot of fillers: Emma Stone for the Help? And why is Carey Mulligan in leading for Shame? Anyway, as usual Keira is being snubbed by Bafta. But the most obscene thing is the absence of Vanessa Redgrave. No words. And No Tree of Life? Not a good Bafta year.
The Bridesmaids love continues. I´m okay with it, even though I don´t understand it. I love Kristen Wiig and I really liked the movie but come on. I would have loved to see more recognition for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. Andy Serkis was snubbed here. I hope he get´s at least a Special Achievement Award or something at the Oscars.
No Inbetweeners Movie in British Film, what a bunch of benders….
Scott…… how is number 16 not making the list a glaring omission but not numbers 1 and 6?
So glad to see no Glenn Close in the leading actress..
I’m not a fan of The Tree of Life, but it damn well deserves these nominations more than that crapfest Bridesmaids. Melissa McCarthy is the only good thing in it. The script is awful, Kristing Wiig is unbearable, it’s too long. It got nominated by the art directors guild? For what? That’s just disgraceful. Now the Brits have it on the long list for screenplay as well. Are any of these nominators actually seeing these movies?
The best actress will be :
M Streep
M Williams
C Theron
T Swinton
V Davis
A snub say in DGA, ASC or Eddies would be bad news.
More bad news? It would be stick a fork in it time.
Hey Beth, did we ever tally to see if asterisks resulted in nominations?
im loving the strong showing for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo XD
Sasha, I think mostly the asterisks result in nominations, but there’s an exception or two per category. Let me see if I can find more info.
HP: Deathly Hallows 2 for outstanding british film, I’m cool but not for Best Film?!
Senna, Ides of March, and We Need to Talk About Kevin?!
@k-a and in America you know Harry Potter DH2 feels
Like I tweeted Sasha, last year these were the ones that completely stayed with the asterisks:
Lead Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing, Costume Design, Production Design, Makeup and Sound
2011 BAFTAs:
Adapted Screenplay – Winter’s Bone* was replaced by Dragon Tattoo
Visual Effects – Iron Man 2* and Tron Legacy* were replaced by Black Swan and Toy Story 3
Cinematography – Shutter Island* was replaced by 127 Hours
Original Music – The Social Network* was replaced by 127 Hours
Lead Actress – Carey Mulligan* and Michelle Williams* were replaced by Noomi Rapace and Hailee Steinfeld
Supporting Actor – Bob Hoskins* was replace by Pete Postlethwaite
In the first round of voting, entire BAFTA membership can vote to nominate anybody in any category. The asterisks denote longlist nominees that were chosen by members of individual “chapters” — what we call branches. The filmmakers chosen by the chapters have a bit of an edge because the top choices by rach chapters are assured to advance to the nnext round. Asterisks also serve as badge of honor guidelines to other BAFTA voters — the asterisks may have same psychological effect as guild nominations, see?
That’s my understanding.
Apologies for typos. I’m posting from phone keyboard.
Congrats to 14 noms for Thatcher.
If I’m not mistaken ONLY 5 asterisk picks per category are guaranteed to advance to 2nd round of voting — just the top 5 “chapter” picks are assured to proceed to next stage.
Ryan – Except in the case of ties (supporting actress has 6 asterisks this year).
@Someone
“The Tree of Life” is the most overrated movie of the year so I’m glad that it loses almost everything (except Golden Palm – this decision was a disgrace for Cannes Film Festival obviously). “Harry Potter” – the second most overrated movie of the year – surely shouldn’t be nominated in best picture category.”
Hows HP the 2nd most overrated and how it shouldn’t be nominated in the best picture category (not counting those critic awards shows)? And if memory serves me right, wasn’t it true that Harry Potter 8 (7.2) was voted Best Movie of the summer, didn’t it had more reviews and maybe higher grades than almost every film this year, did extremely and acceptional well in not only in the domestic box office but in the foreign box office (and broke alot of $$$ records), wasn’t it known as the most anticipated movie event of the year, and(you know this is 100% true) it is not only maybe popular with the critics but popular with the public?
My guessing as to as to why HP didn’t make the best film cut is probably because they wanted room for American and other worthy films to make it, like Dragon Tattoo and such. No point in dulling up both lists with all Brit films. Plus I think BAFTA only does five for each, so it wouldn’t have made the actual noms anyway. Plus no point in being all mad. Look at all it’s noms! Best Brit film, Rickman, Desplat, Kloves. All major stuff. Be proud guys. Be proud.
@Someone and that explains why HP:DH 2 was nominated for Outstanding British film
OCO300 let me tell you something… harry potter have not been nominated to brtish film, yet.. and if it ere nomainated it is because it is a british right, right??
and hello, harry potter was not preselectioned to best picture, soo even not bafta awards consider to harry potter as a good fil to compite in thet important category..
by the way british film is not as important. Face t.
@castle but OCO300 is right, I mean besides critical award ceremonies doesn’t Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 deserves the right to be nominated for Best Picture for all the work it’s done in the box office, and getting universal critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, Metacritic, and Broadcast Film Critics Association?
I am sorry club, but he is not right, he doesnt not face the reality. It doesnt deserve any anomination for best picture, and the critics award have been agree with me. And also the insdustry. So Tomatoes, IMDB, and mostly the 9% in broadcast… doest matter at all. Because the critics choce awards didnt nominate to your favorite movie to best picture.
They worked so hard, but the final result was not good enough for getting best picture nominatios
- no screeners were sent out for A Better Life and Take Shelter,
- Tree of Life was perhaps the most prominent film NOT to send DVD Screeners to BAFTA members.
And there’s the cue for My Daily Rant.
Fuck filmmakers who can’t find a movie on their own unless it’s delivered by courier to their fucking doorstep. It demonstrates that they have less interest in their own art than the readers of Awards Daily and other movie sites.
Best Picture isn’t Best at all.
Best Picture is simply this: My Favorite Movie of the Dozen I Could Be Arsed to Watch.
And of course they all had to tear into their free copy of The Iron Lady, because it’s a good juicy wallow in their own realm. How can you properly gossip at teatime if you can’t cluck about Streep as Thatcher?
@castle so was 2011 a worst year for movies and not sequels?
your question doest make sense. It s a good year for movies. The sequels no so much
Tree of Life was perhaps the most prominent film NOT to send DVD Screeners to BAFTA members. Don’t know the reason.
The expense, is my guess.
Look at the titles we know of that didn’t send screeners. The Tree of Life, Take Shelter, A Better Life — they don’t have a war chest of funds saved up from their box-office receipts.
If we can agree that part of the purpose of awards is (and has always been) another form of marketing — there’s little point in trying to raise the profile of films that have already finished their theatrical run months ago.
Not to mention the fact that “Nominated 7 BAFTAS” means pretty much nothing on the cover of a DVD case, whereas “”Nominated for 7 Oscars” is still eye-catching to casual moviegoers.
It doesn’t make economic sense to throw another 50 grand down the money pit.
how did the Iron Lady get nominated for Best Film?
DON’T GET WHY YOUR’ SO SURPRISED IN THE 1ST LONG LIST FROM A MONTH AGO HP WAS MARKED AS British Film…………………. Now, King Speech was in british film so anyway
I was very surprised by the Weekend omission. The film was well received in the UK and the US.
Strange that Redgrave was left out. And how is Carey Mulligan’s role a leading actress part in Shame?
Happy to see Rickman nominated. They always go bold in the supporting categories. Maybe Rickman will win the BAFTA this year!
I agree with you 100% Ryan, it is pretty ridicoulous that this people can’t move their a** to go see these movies.
@Pat : replace Theron (whom I have not seen yet, I confess) with Elizabeth Olsen (whom I have seen and was just blown away by)and drinks are on me !
@Arthur I was only asking?
@castle even in the box office?
My guess is that the BAFTA members saw The Tree of Life and felt it was unworthy of awards, cinematography aside. Much the same way AMPAS will.
I’m disappointed to see Olivia Colman not ‘asterisked’. An Oscar nomination doesn’t seem possible, does it?
Oh, and the Weekend snub is also very disappointing. Best British Film long list seemed a certainty.
They really enjoyed The Help. Of the five starred Best Supporting Actresses, three are from that film.
Why must people wine and complain at the lack of love for The Tree of Life. Not in a million years was that going to be a major awards player outside of cinematography and visual effects.
in box office thanks to the fans, they love it so much and forget the big mistakes made
Jonah Hill (Peter Brand) – Moneyball*
Really…?
Can anyone explain to me how VANESSA REDGRAVE missed out on the shortlist here while Zoe Wanamaker, Judi Dench, and Emily Watson didn’t??? All fine actresses but they basically sleep-walked through their performances! This is one of the most mind-boggling omissions all season. I thought for sure BAFTA would nominate one of their greatest living actresses in a highly acclaimed, Shakespearean performance! This is some crazy shit!
Well, I’m eating a lot of crow today. And I’ll take the “I told you so” chiding in good stride.
BUT:
No Harry Potter for Best Picture from BAFTA?
No Michael Shannon for Best Actor (Take Shelter) from BAFTA?
No Jessica Chastain for Best Actress (Take Shelter) from BAFTA?
No Vanessa Redgrave for Best Supporting Actress (Anonymous or Coriolansu) from BAFTA?
I will have to just deal with it and hope AMPAS will take note of their exclusion (in a good way by voting for these categories).
And while there is much to admire from the “cannot ignore” performances (Judi Dench was great in My Week With Marilyn and I love seeing Ralph Fiennes listed in Coriolanus), I have to say the BAFTA exclusions I listed above just piss me off.
@J.-C. B
You haven’t seen her performance yet, yet you want to replace her by olsen (who btw have any chance by now)? well i have seen Theron’s performance and it’s the best strong complex terrific performance by a female lead, better than Olsen, Close, Davis, the best of 2011, read some reviews of her performance, stellar reviews from Roger Ebert who called it “flawless”, to Richard Roeper “Theron gives one of the most impressive performance of the year” to Todd McCarthy “Theron’s performance is terrific” to Rex Reed ” A trimphant performance”,Matt Stevens “Theron gives a fierce, fearless performance that deserves attention”
to Steven Rea : ” Theron is thrilling”……………..
But hey those reviews you wouldn’t find them here unfortunately, a personal advice read professional experts and don’t follow some blogger who have an agenda pushing so hard their favorites and trying so hard to ignore others…
I just find for ex putting a star for Bejo who is considered for a supporting actress instead of Theron or even mara is shameful, anyway i just wish that Theron’s deserving performance will be nominated.
Even DH2 snub won`t deter me from celebrating the total and utter fiasco that is Dame Keira, lol! Worst performance since Zellwegger in CM, heck, topping that by a jaw, so I`m very proud of awards organizations and critics for refusing to acknowledge the existance of those embarrassing super hystrionics. Excellent list.
I think that Brit vote will get Oldman in over Leo so Best Actor will be Clooney, DuJurdin, Fassbender, Oldman and Pitt.
Any hope they didn`t like Close? Or was her movie ineligible?
I do believe the long game is over for HARRY POTTER… what a shame.
I’m surprised MELANCHOLIA, similarly to TREE OF LIFE, didn’t garner any potentials, as it’s been gaining steam recently — and Europe has favored it recently.
Of course IRON LADY and MY WEEK WITH MARILYN gain more momentum as it’s a British award show.
Why can’t the Oscars do a shortlist?
Aaron,
I can’t understand Redgrave’s omission either. For Christ sake, BAFTA gave her one of the largest standing ovations ever at their awards show two years ago. She is acting royalty . . . I just don’t get it. I would like to think that movie people recognize artistry first and leave politics out of it. Still? One has to wonder . . . WHY?
Wow a bit overboard with the Carey Mulligan nominations. Vanessa Redgrave is what Keira Knightley will be in 40 years. She’ll get an Honorary BAFTA and that’s it. Why do they hate them both so much? Worst BAFTA longlist I’ve seen in years.
So, they rarely ever 6 nominations in an acting category? In other words, one of these 6 top vote getters in supporting will likely get the boot in the final round??
The music in Warhorse is absolute rubbish and does NOT deserve any accolades. Blergh.
Vanessa Redgrave is still, obviously, being judged by her EXTREMELY left-wing, even anarchist politics of the ’60s. The Workers Revolutionary Party was her bailiwick. In exact opposition to Maggie Thatcher’s extreme RIGHT wing conservatism. This was occuring in England at exactly the same time, believe it or not. I know because that’s when I was living there and going through BOTH experiences, sometimes daily, sometimes simultaneously.
The Worker’s Revolutionary Party doesn’t exist anymore, but people are still, CLEARLY not letting Redgrave forget it.
HOWever, AMPAS is very left-leaning as I keep endlessly repeating and they might just overlook Redgrave’s politics, or FORMER politics and embrace her. In fact, I think they will.
AND she’s got Harvey. Yes, “Coriolanus” is a Weinstein film, too.
The first 30-40 mins. of “C” are bloody, bloody, bloody. It’s so violent in that section, I wanted to walk out of the theater. But then the play starts, FINALLY! And Ralph Fiennes and his BRILLIANT perf of “C” really kick it.
Redgrave’s overwhelming. Bascially playing Margaret Thatcher, actually. A woman, who is a warlord herself, and since she lives in a time (Ancient Rome) when she can’t express herself directly, she embues her son the troubled Coriolanus with all her ambitions and vileness.
Redgrave speaks Shakespeare as if it were conversational speech. No mean feat, just that. And her take on what motives war and the people who start wars, as her character(NOT Margaret Thatcher but close enough)maliciously and joyously does…well, it’s breathtaking. And cut from whole cloth. She’s playing a war-monger extraordinaire and makes Lady Macbeth seem weak-willed, so great is Redgrave’s achievement.
Anglophile leftys that the Academy are I think they will include Redgrave in Best Supp. Actress.
@Ryan – you have no idea how frustrating it is for the BAFTA members who do seek out (and pay) to see every film to receive the long list every year and find it contains ONLY films for which screeners were sent out. Mostly the official screenings of films such as Take Shelter aren’t even half full. But that’s the nature of the awards season, real cinephiles know that the Oscar & Bafta winners are NOT the best films of the year. In A Better World won the Oscar last year and Best Director at European Film Awards recently, it doesn’t even feature on the long list of Films not in English Lang. Guess why? Troll Hunter, really?
no Weekend & ToL (((((((((((
but yay the Artist & TGWTDT!
I guess Weekend was way too indie for these snobs.
Read someone writting that some would suggest BAFTA noms were going to get HP back on the Oscar race. Nope. HP was dead the moment BOTH PGA and SAG avoided it. The GG snub just made it worse. BAFTA looked as the consolation prize, and I should note that it IS on the British Film longlist (I wonder if they’ll dare to not nominate it there, too).
To me, the highlight is Antonio Banderas making the cut. He’s amazing in the latest Almodovar. But it itches me that they longlist him and the film itself for Foreign but don’t with Adapted Screenplay and Director. It’s not like Pedro does need more BAFTAS but…
“anglophile lefties”? The Academy?
THAT’S why Brokeback lost then..??

ukwatcher, that’s an excellent point worth quoting. Thanks.
I hope beyond hopes that Harry Potter gets an Oscar nomination for Best Picture…. glad to see it get some love here, especially for Alan Rickman and the Screenwriter.
This is 2009 all over again. I’ll be looking towards the British awards to take a chance on Refn…again.
Having just seen TTSS, it’s nice to see Oldman, Cumberbatch, Hurt, Burke and Firth in the hunt here. But where, oh where, is Toby Jones, Tom Hardy and Mark Strong — all of whom give THE performance of their careers…
@Kelly yeah me too, honestly
Ehh – The Iron Lady in the running for best film? Grosssss!
Im thrilled about the Dragon Tattoo love! And confused about the absent of Tree of Life and Vanessa Redgrave and Take Shelter

I have lost my faith in the movie critics and the Oscars. Warrior is the best heart felt film I have seen this year. I love movies, I wish some of you were not so wrapped up in the Hollywood society to see what is a great movie.
Glad to see Michael Fassbender nominated for Shame. Cannot understand how they didn’t give Steve McQueen a nod for director, it was such a powerful take on addiction. Perhaps it was just too gratuitous as The Golden Globes didn’t nominate him either….
