just noise, visuals though good but like 007.
heavy, haunting, mystical and dramatic score would’ve created the mood so rich and intense and would’ve arrested attention. this feels what will follow next would be aliens landing from mars, and what’s with wires being plugged into brain?
even then it starts good but by end, it gets too sci-fi.
I never get bored of this title sequence.
Great opening credits, but Mission Impossible and Tintin’s were still better.
wow I expected there would be like 5 people! congrats!
i thought i was the only few that going to win the contest, but it seems it is not the case
^_^
The title sequence was my favorite part of the movie. I really loved the implication of a new sort of heroine being born, with all the fluid and pain that that implies. The rest of the movie…was faithful to the book, which was often good but a little uneven. Can’t believe you didn’t read it Sasha! (as you said on another post) Maybe I’d think the film was better if I hadn’t
I guess this is what I get for going with my gut…
OMG, it’s the first time I ever won one of these!
Best Opening Sequence Ever!
Or maybe next to Panic Room.
I never win in any of these contests.
No runners up? Aw shoot, I would’ve finally seen my name on the site. Saving the opening credits for the theater.
“and what’s with wires being plugged into brain?” Lisbeth’s life is her computer. She always has it with her, is always connected to it and she is part of an elite underground hacking group (it’s explained in more detail in the books). The fat guy with the NIN shirt in the movie (Plaque) is also a member. So that’s what the computer wires being plugged into her brain in the opening sequence represents. Congrats to all the DGA winners!
congrats ppl!
gah best title sequence!
I’m gonna go get stoned when I watch this in theaters….
Once more question. Is that supposed to be ink or some kind of oil? Or something else?
Judging by the content of the movie I would say either sexual fluids or blood.
Though in a literal sense it looks like it has the viscosity of oil.
And at times it appears to just simply be water.
Ah, read this article for more info-

“sexual fluids or blood.”
What color bodily fluids have you seen?
That guy says oil but that is coming from the writer of the article not from the director…..
I’m still thinking either ink(tattoo’s you know) or oil
Craig, obviously the color doesn’t have to literally match whatever it is.
Ok, here it is from a discussion with the director-
4. The brilliant title sequence, explained.
I alluded to Dragon Tattoo’s opening credits a few days ago — an inky, fluid, black-on-black fusion of sex, knowledge, anguish and technology set to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of the Led Zeppelin classic “Immigrant Song” — and probably could have listened to Fincher talk about it all day.
“I think title sequences are an opportunity to set the stage,” he said, “or to get people thinking in different terms, maybe, than whatever it is the movie to be going in. Often times, when movies are marketed, it’s more with an idea toward, ‘What’s the consensus that everybody has that will get them into the 7 o’clock show. So often times a title sequence can help reorient their thinking. And I liked the idea of this sort of primordial tar or ooze of the subconscious, and I liked the idea that it was her nightmare.”

If Fincher wanted it to be blood he would have made it red…. and it would have looked pretty cool. Also um…. semen has a very different consistency.
That first link explains some of the images better if you aren’t familiar with the source material though. I didn’t realize we were seeing stuff from the other 2 novels.
Looks to me like the consistency changes from one shot to the next. Some of it oil, some of it ink, some blood, some water, some something else…? But the whole thing drenched in black, cause black is disturbing and sets the tone best I guess.
I understand what they are going for. I know the source material and all the images are homages of things that happen to the characters. I’m just curious what that substance is.
I’m thinking tattoo ink.
Blood and ink have pretty much the same consistency and I don’t see why Fincher would do black blood.
Can we say that nothing there has the consistency of semen?
This is an interesting comment-
“Is that a flash cut I see before me? At 1m45s a reverse negative image of the pierced nipple pops up. Presumably to conclude the “vignette” about Lisbeth’s mother being punched by Lisbeth’s father, the blood spraying onto the child Lisbeth, a static shot of the child is flash cut with Lisbeth now, and then the pierced nipple. Very cool.”
I’m sticking with ink. I find the blood theory silly.
No, I wouldn’t say so. The consistency very clearly changes throughout the sequence. Some of it looks like it could be semen or vaginal fluid and it would be fitting with the content of portions.
Aren’t you a guy….. I’d assume you would be more familiar with semen than that….
motorcycle oil, ink, blood, sweat, sexual fluids, water…I think they’re all there.
*grease
or let’s say bodily fluids rather
Ok, whatever floats your boat. I’m saying either ink oil or some fictional substance in between.
I find your sexual fluid theory sillier than your blood one
there’s obviously some sexually charged images in it and there very well could be images symbolic of an orgasm.
And obviously there are violent images in it and violence often leads to blood shed. Jesus, does nobody have any common sense? lol
And he crosses the line into obnoxious Scott. Yes there are violent images performed on character made entirely of liquid….hence the splatter
Fincher going for black blood for no real reason makes sense to you?
Well, ink or oil splattering off of someone who’s punched doesn’t make much sense either…
just because it’s all black and looks like oil or ink doesn’t mean it can’t be representative of other fluids from one scene to the next. Don’t be so literal. I thought you guys like outside the box abstract sort of art crap?
These people are made of a goddamn liquid! It’s not supposed to make sense in a biological way.
Who the hell was being literal? You are the one saying fake people made entirely of some black liquid are bleading like real human beings
And of course this kids ego is so undeservingly huge that when somebody presents an opinion on something we will probably never know(hell if Fincher even knows for sure cause all it really is is pixels on a computer) he is so sure he is right he assumes he is the only one with common sense(applied to a bunch of abstract images where common sense doesn’t mean shit.)
Holy crap! I made it. Forgot I put Fincher on the list.
am i the only starting to think that with good support from the pga and dga for gwtdt that rooney mara could actually bump swinton or close in the best actress race?
No, I certainly don’t think you are knee_play.
I think the nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars should be
The Artist
War Horse
Tree of Life
Harry Potter and the Deahtly Hallows Part 2
Hugo
The Descendants
Midnight in Paris
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Ides of March
Moneyball
The Top 5 to me might be
1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
2. Tree of Life
3. Hugo
4. The Descendants
5. The Help
Title sequence – junk.
