Final SAG Predictions and No Guts, No Glory

Final SAG predictions and a No Guts, No Glory — up to three only please!

My problem is this: I don’t think The Artist is going to go home empty handed tonight.  So, if The Help is going to win ensemble, Jean Dujardin is going to win Best Actor.  The King’s Speech and Slumdog Millionaire both won SAG ensemble.  Therefore, my final predictions are:

Best Actor: George Clooney, The Descendants
Best Actress: Meryl Streep, The Iron Lady (I will die if it’s Davis, but alas, I don’t feel it will happen)
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer, Beginners
Best Supporting Actress: Octavia Spencer for The Help
Ensemble — impossibly, but I think: The Artist

And therein are my final predictions.

No Guts, No Glory: Jean DuJardin wins for Best Actor

  2. Sasha why would it surprise you if Davis won, I would be surprised if she didnt win. Her and Clooney are near locks to win at this point. Im not saying Davis will win the Oscar, but SAG is in the bag at this point. I think now you are just playing the underdog card.

I may be naive, but I keep reminding myself what a huge body SAG is and how all the people I personally know who are SAG members aren’t even working actors…they are more in tune with the general population and their tastes and might just make some surprising choices.

  9. I think SAG is definitely between Streep and Davis, and it may be a question if voters feel that Davis is too much a part of the ensemble of The Help, which I think will win Best Ensemble. I am predicting Davis, but would not be surprised if Streep wins.

  17. What’s weird to me is that viola Davis and Octavia spencer both have the same size part essentially and neither one is truly a lead in that film as its a true ensemble (emma stone is the closest to a true lead part). I’d give the help an ensemble win, spencer the supporting win and Streep lead actress because her role is indisputably the lead part in her film and a great performance. Or Michelle Williams!

To me The Help is a dual lead movie with Emma Stone and Viola Davis as the leads. Viola Davis is a lead mainly because of the way it begins and ends.

  23. Streep won it for Doubt, I think the SAG is Davis’s to lose. I would love to see Michelle pulling an upset. Also, Clooney’s win is a walk in a park. The Help gets 2 wins, so it can lose best ensemble, which will go The Artist and we can close shop, the Oscar race has officially ended.

  24. The Oscars need to have a biopic role win an Oscar. Yah, Plummer’s Hal is based on director Mike Mills’ father, but that hardly counts as his father was not famous. This year, we have 3 biopic roles that stand out — Pitt, Streep and Williams. All three have won something on this circuit, but it is perhaps Streep’s year at last. Or maybe Michelle Williams, fresh off her sexy magazine stint. Plus, Williams looks good to win off her critics and GG victories, as well as her role in potential flop “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” which, at $200m, is her biggest film to date by far…and a likely flop. She could easily follow in the foot-steps of last year’s winner…child-star turned Oscar-winner turned biggest post-Oscar disappointment.

Streep or Williams will follow the likes of Julia Roberts, Marcia Gay Harden, Jim Broadbent, Jennifer Connelly, Adrien Brody, Nicole Kidman, Chris Cooper, Charlize Theron, Jamie Foxx, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Reese Witherspoon, Forest Whitaker, Helen Mirren, Marion Cotillard, Sean Penn, Sandra Bullock, Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo….all of whom won Oscars in the past 10 years for playing real-life people, famous or not.

Remember in 2008, when Julie Christie was deemed worthy of a comeback Oscar for Away from Her, which also surprised many by popping up for Adadapted Screenplay? Well, she was upset by Cotillard, winner of the GG and BAFTA, who had played a real-life person. Same thing happened when SAG winner Sean Penn upset critical favorite and GG/BAFTA winner Mickey Rourke in 2009.

In the cases of 2010 when Sandy won over Streep, in 2002 when Jim Broadbent won over Jon Voight, and in 2003 when Nicole Kidman won over Salma Hayek…we had two real-life roles competing with the most broad, generic performance coming out the victor. Yah, My Week with Marilyn may be the better film, but it is Streep’s Margaret Thatcher that is really the more pointed and most distinct. Williams is an actress whom I have watched grow up from what I call a teeny-bopper to perhaps the best young actress working. This past year, she delivered really poignant performances in Meek’s Cutoff and Take This Waltz, but it is her broad characterization that simple-minded audiences take hold of, because this is a character that they are all too familiar with. It is a personality they love to like and love to dismantle. It is these same people, a generation or three ago, that consumed her and presumably lead to her untimely death.

By giving Williams a SAG Actor award, as well as an Oscar, they would finally be making amends for robbing perhaps one of the most underrated talents and beauties of the biggest prize in Hollywood.

  26. The Help will win ensemble and Supporting actress. People will not want to give THe Help a third award for Davis, so they will vote for Streep.

While this will make Streep the frontrunner for the Oscar, voters may be okay giving both Supporting actress and best actress to The Help there, since there is little chance it will win Best Picture (the equivalent of Best Ensemble). So Streep will be the favourite, but Davis will still have a strong chance. That’s how it is going to play out!!

  37. “Same thing happened when SAG winner Sean Penn upset critical favorite and GG/BAFTA winner Mickey Rourke in 2009.”

I find it hard to understand why people have this misconception that Mickey Rourke was the critical favorite for Best Actor over Sean Penn back in 2008 (for movie year 2008). It was the exact opposite. Sean Penn won far more many critical prizes than Mickey Rourke did. Sean Penn won NYFC. He won LAFC and National Society of Film Critics. He won Boston, he won BFCA, he won a whole slew of smaller critical prizes. Mickey Rourke was left way in the dust when it came to critic awards, at least when it came to the high profile ones. True that Rourke had the GG/BAFTA, but Penn had the SAG and the BFCA. I remember the race seemed pretty even going into the home stretch, with a slight advantage going to Penn. I don’t know where this idea has come from that Penn was this huge upset winner over “critical favorite” Rourke, which is just not accurate.

If there was some so and so actress clearly not deserving a win treated as a front runner I could understand your argument. But we are talking about Meryl Streep – The Actress – we are talking about Meryl Steep in The Iron Lady – amazing performance – Such a great work cannot be placed in a “Weinstein makes it happen” file. Streep is making her own fortune with her marvelous work, Mr.W is supporting and in my opinion sometime he is damaging. Monique said it best: I thank the Academy for making it about the performance and not about the politics.

  72. I really hope Streep doesn’t win the Oscar for playing Thatcher this year. After all that she needs to have 3 Oscars narrative for so long, it’d be such an underwhelming ending to it.
Plus, if Meryl wins for playing a real character with an accent, that goes from strong to dementia in a tailor made biopic, which is kind of the very definition of Oscar bait. Would that put an end to that kind of movie? I mean, if you know you’re not going to top Streep and it won’t automatically grant you an Oscar? Why bother? And from the voter’s point of view. If you have voted for Meryl Streep in this kind of role, will you ever find another one that you think is at the same level?

Just my random thoughts of the day. Well, I have others, but unrelated ;) to this topic.

  74. It’s been since 1993 where all four acting awards went to actors who played fictional characters. Just something to think about.

  80. The year I thought Inglourious Basterds truly was the best film, Harvey couldn’t pull off the win. Probably because it wasn’t safe like TKS, The Artist, Shakespeare in Love, etc.

  83. Boy, I really wanted Meryl Streep to win here. That would officially mean she’s the frontrunner. But I’m not feeling it. I say Viola wins Best Actress, and The Artist wins Ensemble.

  87. Good call on Jean Dujardin NGNG. Although for some reason I am still on the Clooney bandwagon. After all, Johnny Depp won a SAG for Captain Jack Sparrow too, but lost to Sean Penn and it was THE comedic performance. I don’t think they would give the Oscar to Dujardin, despite the fact that I loved his performance. The Descendants however seems to be this year’s Up in the Air. I am really really rooting for Gary Oldman, what a great surprise that would be!
